Graphic Design & Painting, Emily Zepp Jan 2023

Graphic Design & Painting, Emily Zepp

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Starting with the desire to explore the connection between GD and painting, I realized the only difference between the two is the context in which the work is created. Both graphic design and painting seek to impart messages upon the viewer and explore a certain perspective. Success can be measured in both disciplines by the effectiveness of the communicated message.

The Basics Of Horticulture, Maria Uhase

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The purpose of this series of fine art infographic posters was to combine visual art with information to create an instructional and compelling body of work about horticulture. As part of my Honors Senior Research Project, I designed five large-scale posters with the individual pieces focusing on one topic of gardening. Together they form a foundation for anyone to begin their own successful garden.

The series includes information from how to begin growing plants to how to maintain a healthy garden. Since there are many ways to approach each of these processes, I described methods based on the variety of …

Oronyms, Arianna Cozart

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

There are many ways of creating understanding; art is one of them. When there are misunderstandings created through a combination of art and oronyms, however, that is where the real fun begins. Oronyms are similar to homonyms however, instead of the same word being spelled in different ways, oronyms are usually composed of multiple words used together that cause confusion in the brain.[1]

An example would be the phrase, “Have you seen me at my darkest,” being misconstrued as, “Have you seen me in my carcass.” This creates an oronym which could be illustrated as two individuals, one envisioning …

Interaction As A Lost Art, Megan Steele Jan 2017

Interaction As A Lost Art, Megan Steele

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In today’s day and age, people are consumed by technology. We tend to use phone and email rather than meeting up in person to share the experiences in our lives. It’s easier, more convenient, and quicker, but in-person interaction is a critical key in keeping relationships alive. Body language, tone of voice, and emotional cues are absent or easily taken out of context when using technology to communicate. The use of electronics takes away human presence.

This exhibition focused on encouraging the idea of meeting up with people face-to-face whether it’s a long time friend, or a stranger. The mural …

Artist Statement

Prior to becoming a graphic design student, I was very interested in illustration. I wanted an opportunity to hone my illustration skills, focus on one consistent style of illustration, consistently draw the same characters, and practice writing. Creating a children’s book gave me the opportunity to do all of those things. And, after several semesters of work, it’s great to finally see The Call of the Undertow completed! I hope that you enjoy reading this story and looking at the images because I enjoyed creating it.

You Shouldn't Be Reading These, Taylor Jacobs Jan 2016

You Shouldn't Be Reading These, Taylor Jacobs

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This research was based on an introspective view of one's inner dialogue and the science behind when it came into existence for all of us, and why we continue to use it as adults

Artist Statement:

This body of work originated in the shower, where my best and worst thoughts are conjured. My constant stream of thoughts are typically about the connections I have with the people in my life- friends, family, people no longer in my life, and those who have passed. I consistently try to organize my thoughts and feelings.

Some friendships are constant and stable, and I …

Hand Lettered, Jennifer L. Shaw Jan 2016

Hand Lettered, Jennifer L. Shaw

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Around this time last year, I discovered hand lettering on chalkboards around Folk for the NASAD accreditation show. I found these pieces to be particularly inspiring and wanted to learn how to create something similar. Having absolutely no experience with hand lettering I knew that this was going to be a long process. I tasked myself with creating 100 small pieces in varying styles to teach myself hand lettering. I was inspired to end the project with a large chalkboard mural about the school of art to then be donated to the school when the project is complete. The reason …
