Western colonialist architecture has a long and complicated relationship with its materiality and the surrounding ecosystem. For the past millennia, buildings and structures have permanently altered the landscape. These changes are not always bad. An ecosystem is constantly evolving, and sometimes these changes allow for growth and metamorphosis. In other cases, however, these colonialist structures can bring about ecosystem destruction and deterioration over time. Materiality and change are approached in this project as they relate to architecture. In Western architecture, materials are almost always new and standardized and have exact lengths and widths that can be ordered to certain dimensions. …

Living Things is a multi-part, multi-media installation which explores the mutual and cyclical impacts between us, objects, and environment. The work is separated into two parts, or “ecophases,” which form a narrative for the life cycle of the things we are surrounded by.

Ecophase 1, exhibited in the artist’s studio. Home. Mutual dependence: Our role breathing life into our belongings through use and care. Their role as points of reference for the way we live. Making sense of what surrounds us; perception of objects altered by association, memory, engagement.

Discovering wonders of the weather and the ever changing plant life in the Northeast, and tragedies about how disrespectful and selfish humans are towards the environment;My senior project is showing my viewers how exciting and diverse the natural world is and how necessary it is to recognize the destructiveness of plastic and our single-use culture.
