Writing And Illustrating Books For Young Readers, Denise May Williamson

This creative project consists of one complete manuscript for a children's book, intended for young readers (ages 5-8), and twelve possible illustrations created in coordination with the text. The manuscript explores the difference between old age and youth, as it is discovered by a child desiring to spend the day with his grandfather. Page numbers and other notes are included to define how the text would come together to fit publishers' guidelines. Various illustration techniques were studied throughout the coursework of this program, to include: black and white ink, color reproduction, watercolor painting, and enhanced computer art. It is the purpose of this study (1) to investigate industrial arts programs in the Greater Seattle area to discover existing conditions and course content, (2) to research selected national curriculum projects for specific course content which each holds important, and 3) to present conditions which can improve industrial arts and assemble course content for selected subjects in industrial arts. This study is concerned with work toward solution of two of the seven problems cited by Schmitt: "l. Keeping up with advances in technology" and "7. Acquiring and teaching modern concepts of industry."

It was the intent of this study to create a series of original pieces of jewelry and micro-sculpture employing new ideas with traditional methods and techniques; (1) combining common gadgets of everyday use into unusual surroundings in order to create a piece of jewelry; and (2) applying new concepts in the manufacturing of jewelry by means of experimental castings.

I have attempted to apply the imagination of my senses to the furniture object in order to satisfy other human needs aside from comfort. These artistic requirements remove the piece of furniture from the realm of neutrality and tastefulness and expect the viewer - user to experience visual communication.

It is the purpose of this study (1) to emphasize the complementary union between literature and the visual arts; (2) to limit the exploration to those specific lyrical prose writers: Hermann Hesse and Virginia Woolf; (3) to create prints utilizing the novel as a source of image-gathering but which do not retain this identity in the finished work; (4) I to experiment with the division of the plates, as well as cutouts for the effect of creating spatial illusion or imaginary space.

Creating weavings on the frame loom is an important method to be investigated in that it is possible to create complex and creative forms without using the intricate process of the harness loom. Because frame loom weaving has so many advantages for secondary art students, it should be investigated and explained so that future teachers, who have had little or no experience with it, could see its value and teach it to their own students.

Studies reveal that industrial arts teachers use principles, laws, and applications of mathematics and science daily, but these are seldom recognized and made meaningful to the students. As a result of this study industrial arts teachers may see a way to use this material to initiate similar situations in their teaching.
