This project is a written and illustrated book for children to assist with the grieving process by exploring different cultural representations of the afterlife. Death is an inescapable part of the human condition. Belief in an afterlife can help children retain a connection to the deceased and can be a useful tool for healing. While very young children (age four to five) inherently believe in existence after death, this decreases after the age of ten. The purpose of this project for GrC 462 is to design and produce an image and information heavy coffee table book on the topic of houseplants. This book will not only include gorgeous photography sourced from the Internet and self shot by me, but all the information one could need to learn how to care for each plant presented in the book. Throughout the quarter, I documented my process and the steps I took in order to complete the entire project on time.

A book cover is one of the first steps in selling a book and is vital in catching a reader’s attention. Still, many book covers in the young adult fiction market are ineffective at reaching their target audience. Since the birth of young adult books, cover design styles have changed drastically, yet little research has been done. Because of this lack of research, two new surveys were built to investigate what specific elements and styles of current young adult book covers appeal to readers. In my thesis, I pay specific attention to inhuman acts of exclusion and discrimination resulting from the systemic barriers perpetuated by xenophobic and nationalist ideologies.

This thesis explores how making things can nurture a sense of kinship that cuts across the organic and inorganic, erasing the distinction between living and dead, material and spiritual. Through handwork such as art-making, sewing, knitting, cooking, woodworking, and beyond, the burden of remembering and of archiving is shared across human and non-human bodies, cultivated through practices of making, and through the materials themselves.
