Bilingualism is the ability to speak more than one language fluently. People of all ages may aspire to learn a second or third language in order to fulfill both personal goals and communicate with a variety of people in different contexts. Irrespective of one’s walk of life or socioeconomic status, being bilingual is a valuable skill. Although English is the language of power in the United States, there are hundreds of other languages spoken in this country.

English painting between 1485 and 1603 shaped and was shaped by a myriad of cultural influences. Art historians generally agree that because England did not produce much of its own art until the 18th century, it had a relatively slight impact on the development of Western art. A cursory history lesson of this time frame likely omits English art apart from the appearance of Hans Holbein the Younger as court painter under Henry VIII and Nicholas Hilliard during Elizabeth I’s reign. This thesis is an exploration of appropriation art specifically referencing policies regarding fair use and focusing on the legal, ethical, and social issues that are associated with appropriating another artist’s work. Though highly controversial, appropriation art has been seen in a wide array of media and has impacted various artistic movements. The accompanying artistic project to this thesis, titled Infringed, uses three historically important copyright infringement court cases to discuss the legality of transforming others work into new and original pieces.
