The Venus Image, William Jay Masterson
The Venus Image, William Jay Masterson
Art & Art History ETDs
The Venus image has been described as the presentation of the obsessive, unreasonable nature of physical desire in a form that ceases to be vulgar and becomes "celestial". This characterization is similar to the major pictorial content of my paintings which deals with the repression of desire for a subtly appealing figure. This study explains and brings into perspective this dominant theme in my work through a description of the pictorial and formal aspects of my paintings and a comparison of my work to the work of four contemporary American painters who have dealt with the female figure in their …

Whereas certain people start with a recollection or an experience and paint that experience, to some of us the act of doing it becomes the experience; so that we are not quite clear why we are engaged in a particular work. And because we are more interested in plastic matters than we are in a matter of words one can begin a picture and carry it through and stop it and do nothing about the title at all.

I wanted to learn from looking at their work and reading about their philosophies. That I did; and it has stimulated in me many thoughts and plans, wishes to try some of their …
The "Illuminusion" Concept, Ray Murman
The "Illuminusion" Concept, Ray Murman
Masters Theses
My intention in painting and drawing is to demonstrate luminous effects in an atmospheric field.
In painting, attention is directed to various color impressions. A color may be perceived as iridescent, metallic, filmy, voluminous, hard, etc. Also, an overall tinted atmosphere establishes a misty field in which these color impressions are displayed. A systematically prepared palette of adjusted colors is then formed. The idea is a planned color effect transforming design elements.
In drawing, light and dark contrast control sets the illumination character. Various graphitic media are used to render atmospheric perspective and delineate objects in space. Impressions of texture, …
