Creating Project Contrast: A Video Game Exploring Consciousness And Qualia, Pierce Papke
Creating Project Contrast: A Video Game Exploring Consciousness And Qualia, Pierce Papke
Honors Projects
Project Contrast is a video game that explores how the unique traits inherent to video games might engage reflective player responses to qualitative experience. Project Contrast does this through suspension of disbelief, avatar projection, presence, player agency in storytelling, visual perception, functional gameplay, and art. Considering the difficulty in researching qualitative experience due to its subjectivity and circular explanations, I created Project Contrast not to analyze qualia, though that was my original hope. I instead created Project Contrast as an avenue for player self-reflection and learning about qualitative experience. While video games might be just code and art on a …

Our oceans are one of the largest ecosystems found on our planet, and they are also one of the driving forces to a balanced planet. I believe that it is very important to restore our oceans to the once clean environment, and it is up to mankind to make that first step to do so soon and without hesitation. I believe that many people are uniformed on the topics of pollution, and it is important to bring attention to the issues through a perspective that society can see. Social media has had a huge influence on helping this, but for …
Water Color: Inspiring Conservation Of Freshwater Ecosystems By Painting With Algae, Kate Lochridge
Water Color: Inspiring Conservation Of Freshwater Ecosystems By Painting With Algae, Kate Lochridge
Honors Projects
“Water Color: Inspiring Conservation of Freshwater Systems by Painting With Algae” is a project that focuses on raising awareness of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie through the creation of algae-based paint. Its goal is to provide a multidisciplinary outlet for understanding complex interactions between the causes, effects, and solutions of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). The novel part of this project is the creation of watercolor paint from algae cells. This paint was used to create algae-based artwork that facilitates an aesthetic interaction with the science of HABs when other informative materials- such as journal articles- can be confusing and …
Metamorphosis: An Exploration Of Transformation In Artmaking, Scarlet Sevits
Metamorphosis: An Exploration Of Transformation In Artmaking, Scarlet Sevits
Honors Projects
My creative project begins with wanting to know how the art making process relates to the process of metamorphosis and the extent to which this process can achieve realism. To explore this question, I chose related subject matter that is the female mythological figures of Ovid’s epic poem Metamorphoses who undergo transformation of the human body. I also chose a methodology that relates to my question. The acts of painting and writing can be explored as processes of transformation and both processes attempt to convince the viewer or reader of reality: the reality of a living figure or the emotional …
Skin Deep: Analyzing Black Representation In The Teaching Of Visual Arts, Destiny Arianna Kearney
Skin Deep: Analyzing Black Representation In The Teaching Of Visual Arts, Destiny Arianna Kearney
Honors Projects
My honors thesis argues that at Bowdoin College, failure to provide Culturally Relevant Teaching in art studio courses dismisses the representation of Blackness in the Visual Arts Department. Culturally Relevant Teaching (CRT) recognizes the importance of all students' cultural experiences in different aspects of learning. It allows for equitable access to education for students of diverse backgrounds. CRT is crucial to reconstructing Art Education to represent diverse student bodies. My position as a Black-Indigenous artist enables me to reflect on the intersection of these frameworks and to build upon them in order to highlight the need for pedagogical practice in …
Exploring The Relationship Between Music And Art Through Paint And Performance, Anna Eyink
Exploring The Relationship Between Music And Art Through Paint And Performance, Anna Eyink
Honors Projects
This project sought to find methods for translating musical compositions into visual compositions. After thorough analysis of each piece's structure, colors, rhythms, tonality, accompaniment, purpose, and extramusical influences, the goal was to conceptualize appropriate color schemes, shapes, mark making, paint application, and arrangements to create a visual representation of the music. As a result, each painting has elements that make sense from a musician's perspective as well as that of an artist.
Bubbles & Bought-Ins: Reevaluating Price Movements In The Art Market, Silas Wuerth
Bubbles & Bought-Ins: Reevaluating Price Movements In The Art Market, Silas Wuerth
Honors Projects
Employs two tests for bubbles in the art market. First, a right-hand forward recursive augmented Dickey-Fuller test to identify explosive price movements. Second, a test for the statistical significance of hedonic regression price index coefficients after controlling for equity market performance. Finds strong evidence for a speculative bubble in the pre-Great Recession "Post-War & Contemporary" market. Evidence for this bubble diminishes but does not dissipate after accounting for the effect of failed sales on index returns.

Music And Art: An Aesthetic Experience, Samantha Martin
Music And Art: An Aesthetic Experience, Samantha Martin
Honors Projects
This project sought to pair art songs performed at my senior recital with paintings. The paintings chosen had to be within one hundred years of the songs’ composition, from the same country as the composer, and have a similar theme or meaning as the art song. The goal was to create an aesthetic experience, as well as making the meanings of the songs more accessible for the audience, especially if the songs were in a foreign language.
