Animals In Drama And Theatrical Performance: Anthropocentric Emotionalism, Peta Tait
Animals In Drama And Theatrical Performance: Anthropocentric Emotionalism, Peta Tait
Animal Studies Journal
This article outlines how nonhuman animals are framed by the emotions of drama, theatre and contemporary performance and considers a distinctive tradition in western culture of enacting animal characters who function as surrogate humans. It argues that, contradictorily, while animal characters confirm anthropocentric emotionalism, drama also contains pro-animal values and concern for animal welfare. Animals embodying emotions in theatrical languages are part of the way animals are used in the traditions of western culture and to think and philosophize with, but they also indicate thinking about the emotions in theatrical performance. The article considers if, however, staging living animals can …

On Top Of The World, Elias Makhoul
be Still
Elias Makhoul felt like he was on top of the world at his medical school’s white coat ceremony, where he was dressed in his white coat for the first time. His fellow classmates and he officially became recognized for becoming student physicians. More than that, it was also a call for celebration, as each of them has endured hardships and overcame numerous obstacles to be there that day. He took the MCAT three times, applied in two application cycles, and was rejected by over 60 schools. Now, he is studying in his second year at NSU-KPCOM. His white coat ceremony …

Gautama Buddha: Illustration Of A Patient’S Vision, Haryashpal Bhullar
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
As a psychiatrist in training, I often have the privilege to connect with the unique thoughts and visions patients may be experiencing. The descriptions shared by one patient during my early psychiatry inpatient rotations stuck with me and eventually inspired me to pursue a residency in the field. While interviewing, she expressed a deep spirituality and often finding solace in the mindfulness teachings of Gautama Buddha whenever she was distressed. She would strengthen this coping mechanism by contemplating him sitting and meditating deeply, within a naturalistic setting, however struggled in describing exactly what she was imagining. I further gathered this …

A Comprehensive Analysis Of Balance, Symmetry, And Center Of Mass In The Gait Cycle Of Transfemoral Amputees, Kayla T. Etienne
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to create a framework that assists in the transfemoral prosthesis fitting process by calculating balance and symmetry to quantify patient comfort with an understanding of bipedal locomotion and human anatomy. Three different software applications were used to compare (1) the body position during gait cycle, (2) the natural and amputee anatomies, (3) the natural and prosthetic legs, and (4) the equilibrium and torque movements of the hip, knee, and ankle joints. Models were created in Maya for analysis in Solidworks and MEL code evaluation with MatLab. The MatLab code tested combinations of joint degrees …

The world is starting to see the rise of a stress related epidemic. Finding time to balance the struggles of everyday life, like academics, finances, careers and relationships, while also maintaining personal mental health is becoming increasingly difficult. This is what prompted me to use my project as an opportunity to help people relieve stress and create a community through the use of art, especially during a time where social interaction has been severely limited due to COVID-19.
My project is a series of live-streamed Zentangle art classes I hosted personally that were open to the public through Zoom. Zentangle …

The Healing Properties Of Interactive Art: Creating A Proposal For Art Within A Hospital Environment, Alexandra Chase
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The consumption of art and interaction with it can be beneficial to individuals in many different ways. Play and exploration engage the mind and can have positive effects, no matter how small. Within a medical setting, this type of interactive art can promote healing within patients by engaging their bodies and minds. With these ideas in mind, the Children’s Hospital and Medical Center (CHMC) put out a call for an interactive sculpture piece to be created for their upcoming building expansion. My piece, Garden Lanterns, was then conceptualized in order to fulfill their requirements and embrace the idea of providing …

Nicaraguan Homeowner Showing Gratitude For Concrete Flooring As Part Of A Public Health Mission Trip, Breonna Kinnison
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
I’m Bree Kinnison, a fourth-year medical student and aspiring psychiatrist. When I’m not studying, I enjoy painting using acrylics. This painting depicts a very fond memory of mine. After completing the medical portion of our mission trip in Nicaragua, we began our public health portion. Along with fellow students, I laid concrete flooring in this woman’s house. For all 76 years of her life, she had never experienced anything other than a dirt floor in her home. Traditional dirt flooring in Nicaraguan homes is responsible for many preventable illnesses. When shown the final product, she reached out and hugged the …

Rory Odom, an artist and United States Marine Corps Veteran based in Florida, provided the cover art for the Spring 2020 issue of The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy (OJOT). “Turtles All the Way Down” is an 8”x10” oil painting on canvas. After a tragic accident changed the course of Rory’s life, painting gave him hope. During rehabilitation, Rory sought opportunities to challenge himself and build technical skill as a painter. His bold use of color and signature impressionist style convey emotion and movement. In the face of adversity, meaningful occupation helped Rory chart a new course in life.

El Artista Está En Línea: E-Performance En El Tiempo De Covid-19, Ezequiel N. González
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)
The 2019 "Guidance on Developing Quality Interprofessional Education (IPE) for the Health Professions" suggests that intentional IPE should be built with outcomes-based goals, deliberate design, and assessment throughout. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, we created an art-based activity to initiate IPE early in the curriculum, in order to expose students to other professional colleagues, and also to raise awareness of how unintentional biases can be created before class activities begin. For that reason, we designed, implemented, and evaluated an interactive art event during the orientation process for incoming health professional students. In partnership with our colleagues …
