Nazi art collecting and looting was a strong and persistent undercurrent throughout World War II. The public and private practices of Nazi officials reveal both their aesthetic tastes and obsession with establishing themselves as highly educated, cultured patrons of the arts. Although the party’s artistic preferences are hard to define, it is evident that their stance on what constituted fine art and culture was entirely illogical, inconsistent, and incongruent. Following World War I, Henri Matisse moved to the South of France to escape the chaotic terrain of post-war Paris. It was in the idyllic Nice where the artist would reveal a "return to naturalism" with his motif of contemplative women before an open window. Uniting portraiture, decorative interiors and landscapes in one composition, Matisse dually investigates the theme of interiority, while providing the viewer with the aesthetic delights, available for his delectation.
