An annotated translation is a translation with notes or annotations of the equivalent selected in the target language with the aim of being accountable for the equivalent. This study examines a tale entitled “la Sorcière de la Rue Mouffetard” written by Pierre Gripari. This study employs qualitative methods and a comparative model to discuss translation problems and their solutions using translation strategies from Molina and Albir (2002). Annotated translation is a study that provides annotations or notes on the chosen equivalents of a number of translated words as a form of translator’s accountability. This research aims to describe the method and technique of the translation of cultural words in “Laskar Pelangi” into a Japanese novel, “Niji no Shoonentachi.” This research uses a descriptive approach with comparative models. Cultural words in this study are determined based on the classification proposed by Newmark’s models. In this research 186 data have been collected according to the two cultural categories, namely, material one and ecological one. The data collection was conducted by comparing Japanese: the target language, and Indonesian: the source language.
