Isabelle Bauer’s Honors Project, “Researching and Designing Marketing Materials for Rachel Messer and Connor Dale” is split into two components. First, the research paper titled "The American West as a Cultural Phenomenon" explores the fascination with the American West and its integration into various aspects of American culture, particularly in music, film, and art. The essay discusses the historical significance of the West and its transformation into a cultural obsession. Focusing on the resurgence of Western aesthetics in modern country music, the project’s second component involves the creation of marketing materials for country artists Rachel Messer and Connor Dale.

Open Textbook For Art 27, Nate Cooper
Open Educational Resources
Work in Progress - In the Spring of 2023, I will endeavor to work collaboratively with students to develop an open textbook for the Art 26: UX Visual Design course. As this class has only been offered once in the past and in general the UX courses are new at Kingsborough there isn't an obvious single authority on the subject. As a practitioner in the field professionally, I grow concerned that even if a solid text could be found in print that industry changes happen so frequently that the only helpful authority will need to be a dynamic work. Hence, …

Research and Scholarship Symposium Posters
The objective of this project was to design a new logo, identity, and stationery system for a Saint Paul non-chain breakfast cafe. Familiarity and in-depth research of both the cafe and its customer base was essential to determine and define the project demographics. There was also an emphasis on working conceptually and utilizing an aesthetic that is appropriate for the intended audience, while also keeping in mind and being stylistically sensitive to the graphic design community that will eventually judge the success of the project as a whole.
Over the course of this project, I became very familiar with the …
Human Origins: An Infocomic, Jocelyn Grant
Human Origins: An Infocomic, Jocelyn Grant
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Perceptions of anthropology and especially human origins are skewed in the public consciousness, in part due to pop culture and in part due to longstanding misleading visual communication. This project is one experimental attempt to bridge the gap between anthropology education and the public through the application of design and design intentionality. With the book itself being currently unfinished, this project is equally an examination of the process of creating such a work and the visual choices the author made in pursuit of the project’s ideals.

Occupational therapy (OT) is an allied healthcare profession that is uniquely situated at the intersection of art and science. OT seeks to improve quality of life by addressing occupations, or daily activities that are meaningful and purposeful (Nelson, 2014). In order to accomplish these goals, occupational therapists (OTs) must use design thinking through the lens of evidence-based practice. This artistic creativity paired with well-researched scientific findings mimics the visual nature of this guide, which prioritizes this need for alternative representation of the sciences.
This visual guide focuses on the interconnectivity of culture, …

Overcoming The Myth Of The Contemporary “Starving Artist”: An Exploration Into The Fusion And Viability Of A 21st-Century Career In Art And Design, Miranda M. Myles Jackson
Overcoming The Myth Of The Contemporary “Starving Artist”: An Exploration Into The Fusion And Viability Of A 21st-Century Career In Art And Design, Miranda M. Myles Jackson
Masters Theses
This research explores the myth of the “starving artist” surrounding the pursuit of a career in the arts. Artists are often dubbed as starving due to the pre-conceived notion that careers in art do not provide longevity or financial stability. Due to this stigma, budding creatives are often dissuaded at home, school, or both from pursuing a career doing what they love. Arts programs are often cut and or remain underfunded, mainly due to this biased perception. Research indicates that careers in the arts have expanded exponentially due to its merge with various fields. According to both the STEM vs. …
Lettering Design: Using Handwritten And Illustrative Techniques To Improve Memorization, Kathryn Will
Lettering Design: Using Handwritten And Illustrative Techniques To Improve Memorization, Kathryn Will
Senior Honors Theses
Graphic designers have many choices when designing and communicating with words which can be seen throughout history. Hand lettering techniques have been used for centuries to record information. Then with the development of moveable type came the mass production of reading materials and the introduction of typefaces. Today, much written communication is viewed through a digitized typeface on a screen. However, there has recently been a noticeable increase in hand lettered type, one of these reasons being that hand lettered type can be easier for people to remember. This paper and the visual application of the research examines how hand …

Qualitative data was gathered through the utilization of a web heuristic evaluation, as well as the evaluation of current marketing materials for LCWA; these insights were used to guide the design and creation of new print and digital marketing materials for the organization. Results of this research aimed to …
Gaia Bioplastics: A Design Exploration Of Bioplastics Through A Brand Campaign, Kelsey Long
Gaia Bioplastics: A Design Exploration Of Bioplastics Through A Brand Campaign, Kelsey Long
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The world is drowning in petroleum-based plastics. Plastics and their byproducts have created an environmental crisis by polluting our oceans and negatively affecting human health and diverse ecosystems around the world. Alternative bioplastics sourced from plants, especially hemp, seaweed, and lignin (organic polymers in wood and bark), offer promising solutions. Still, bioplastics currently make up only one percent of the global plastics market. My undergraduate scholarship in Graphic Design aims to build a consumer awareness campaign of bioplastics and promote their viability through branding, logos, and advertising designs. Based on research into hemp, seaweed, and lignin-sourced bioplastics, I have developed …
Designing A School: Creating A Map For Pace University, Tanner Maple
Designing A School: Creating A Map For Pace University, Tanner Maple
Honors College Theses
The map of a university is an essential tool for students, not only for navigation but also to promote the campus. When the map is outdated, students don’t find it functional and it can not complete its purpose. With the map of Pace University’s downtown campus, a new design was needed to go with the renovations that are taking place. When redesigning the map, features that are seen amongst the most common maps should be considered in the design. One feature that most maps now have is some sort of interactivity. To include this, maps have an online version that …

The first phase of the project consisted of market research and generative user research to develop a plan for a shopping companion app. The findings of this research shaped the scope of the project according to user needs and established the basis of a plan to create a progressive web application and Google Chrome browser extension that will respond to specific user problems. These tools would solve three key user problems: users …
Meritpatch - Family Collaborative Activities, Jason Allan Crouch
Meritpatch - Family Collaborative Activities, Jason Allan Crouch
Masters Theses
There is no doubt that the modern family is very busy and disrupted by outside influences. Social trends and expectations have caused many families to become disconnected. There is research that points to overuse of technology as one culprit. Other research suggests that lack of spiritualism has negatively affected families. Regardless of the cause, it can be argued that the more disconnect within a family, the more likely it is for family members to experience negative social, emotional and/or health related issues as well as broken relationships. This study seeks to define family interactions and activities that support a healthy …

Design As Entrepreneurship: Towards A Design-Specific Entrepreneurship Framework, Con Kennedy
Design As Entrepreneurship: Towards A Design-Specific Entrepreneurship Framework, Con Kennedy
Conference papers
Current thinking on entrepreneurship states there is no specific link between the entrepreneur and their enterprise. Design is an individual creative act; therefore, the practitioner is not separate from their idiosyncratic process. The Designer is the product offering. Designers form Design Enterprises, meaning that with this aspect of inseparability, the Design Entrepreneur is a different kind of entrepreneur than currently discussed. The literature on the topic discusses design as a creative output, not as entrepreneurship output. Like any enterprise, Design Enterprises must be profitable. There are many entrepreneurship processes, none of which seem to address the needs of the Design …
The Utilization Of Visual Design Systems To Promote Higher Levels Of Learning In Educational Environments, Keenan Sultanik
The Utilization Of Visual Design Systems To Promote Higher Levels Of Learning In Educational Environments, Keenan Sultanik
Masters Theses
Traditional higher education environments have changed very little in the last hundred and fifty years, while technology has advanced in nearly every other area of society making each more productive and more capable. This study identifies key aspects of a comprehensive and universal visual learning system that incorporates a more holistic approach to design and interactivity in educational environments. The desired effect of this is elevating classroom learning to higher levels as defined by Bloom’s Taxonomy. In this thesis, I have collected and explored empirical and observational data to examine the relationship between effective learning environments and the use of …

Creativity’S Risk To Design, Con Kennedy
Creativity’S Risk To Design, Con Kennedy
Conference papers
The competencies of designers can be summed up in one word: Creativity. Creativity would seem to be the most critical skill of any design practitioner’s repertoire and is a core component of innovation and entrepreneurship. In general; creativity is considered to be a positive thing, generating positive outcomes for design enterprises and their clients. Designers utilise their creative skills to solve problems for clients, and to develop design ideas and to run their design enterprises. However, the perception of creativity and the creative worker outside the paradigm of design differs from the view within, and therefore a negative opinion of …
Seeing By Creativity: A Creative Execution Designed To Bridge The Gap For The Visually Impaired, Breann Carty
Seeing By Creativity: A Creative Execution Designed To Bridge The Gap For The Visually Impaired, Breann Carty
Masters Theses
This research explores how design can simultaneously reach people who are visually impaired, along with those who can see, by integrating inclusive design. Research reveals that the visually impaired are frequently overlooked by graphic designers. These findings further show that blind individuals feel excluded from society. The aim of this study is to generate a collection of work that effectively combines visual design and braille to provide visually impaired people with a similar experience to those who are not disabled. To determine the most effective way of combining design elements and braille, experiments within focus groups were conducted. This exploration …
Visualizing Grief: An Exploration Of The Stages Of Grief Through Image And Design, Audra L. Rygh
Visualizing Grief: An Exploration Of The Stages Of Grief Through Image And Design, Audra L. Rygh
Masters Theses
Grief is an emotion that people have felt since the beginning of time, but in modern culture, there is a lack of visual representation of the five stages of grief. Because grief is a highly personal and unique experience, it can be difficult to visualize what those stages may look like for the mass population. However, if one could develop an understanding of what each stage includes, as well as a study of the thoughts and feelings of those who have experienced grief, this research could aid in the creation of an accurate representation of the stages of grief. The …

Constructing Identity Through The Lens Of Fashion: An Honors Thesis, Cara P. Doiron
Honors College
Fashion is an artistic decision that every person makes every day. Even those who say they don’t care about clothing are still portraying something about themselves to the outside world with the stylistic choices they make. This creative Honors Thesis explores the impact of fashion on self-representation, accomplished through the design and construction of a capsule wardrobe line of clothing. Due to the project’s personal and introspective nature, the intended wearer is the artist, and therefore the pieces are specifically tailored to her, rather than the straight sized garments that are typically produced in the fashion industry. This line consists …

Creative Micro-Entrepreneurship In Practice: Exploring Digital Tools For Small Creative Businesses, Olivia Messina
Honors Scholar Theses
For the scope of this thesis, my focus is on independently owned businesses
run by “creative micro-entrepreneurs.” I’m using this term, coined by the digital
selling platform Etsy, to encompass artists, craftspeople, and others who sell artistic
goods and services they have made themselves. In addition to being part of this
community personally, I also think that it is important for these small businesses to
have the resources they need to thrive in our rapidly changing economy. Selling
online, clothing & accessories businesses, and cooking & baking businesses are
among the top 5 “side hustles” for Millennials, making creative small …

(First Paragraph) If designers have a central precept, it's that their activity creates economic value for commercial interests, which practitioners regard as their predominant purpose. Within design, even among students, this pecuniary capacity is considered self-evident. But the eternal lament among design professionals is that business isn't grasping this certainty, or only does so erratically. Design is largely regarded by the outside world as a frivolous afterthought.

Usability can be complicated but I provide simple guidelines to effective usability. Every product has an intended purpose, and the scope and aim of usability testing is measuring if a product meets this purpose with regards to a user. Testing is used in many fields, but I intend to focus on user-centered interaction design and how to test when designing and developing such a product. I provide a simple head-start to usability testing based off of my research. Usability testing is a technique used for evaluating a product by testing the product on users who are part of the respective …
