Creating With Code: Critical Thinking And Digital Foundations, Brad Tober
Creating With Code: Critical Thinking And Digital Foundations, Brad Tober
Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications
While students are often attracted to opportunities to learn how to use software applications commonly employed by digital artists and designers, the fact remains that time spent on purely software-based instruction in the classroom is time that could arguably be better spent on exploring the broader conceptual issues of making digital work. This presentation begins to frame an argument for the comprehensive integration of code-based technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Processing/Java, openFrameworks/C++, and Objective-C, into digital art and design foundation curricula. This integration holds the potential to position code-based technologies as new media for teaching art and design alongside …

How To Save Money On Your Next Set Of Patent Drawings., Bernadette Marshall
Bernadette Marshall
In this edition we will cover the most cost effective choices of reference materials when ordering patent drawings. The type of reference material you supply your draftsperson directly influences the price you pay for patent drawings. Reference material comes in many forms and the better you are at identifying the most useful reference materials, the less you will pay for drawings. It's not complicated and with the following tips I hope you will save money on your next set of patent drawings.

Best Source For Patent Drawing Rules & Regulations, Bernadette Marshall

It is with great pleasure that I announce something new from NBG-Drafting and Design. This is our first Newsletter - Special Edition; In this edition we will cover our preferred sources for patent drawing rules & regulations. Finding resources for information regarding patent drawing rules can be frustrating. Much of the information refers to out-of-date methods, like hand drawings using ink pens on board. It is hard to imaging creating any type of mechanical/technical drawings today without the use of CADD (software application for computer aided design and drafting). Most skilled patent draftspersons today are practicing in CADD.

Art & Design Faculty Research
Part of this weekend’s nuit blanche Northern Spark festival, project Mobile Experiential Cinema invites goers to embark on a rambling, bicycle-mounted, multi-location cinematic experience that blends bike culture with locally-bred film. Created by artists Daniel Dean and Ben Moren, the project launched alongside the inaugural Northern Spark fest last year as an interactive projected film-focused group ride featuring live performance elements and urban exploration embodying all plot twists and theatrical curve balls we’ve come to expect from the mystery genre. We caught up with Mobile Experiential Cinema collaborators Dean and Moren to chat about the project’s creation, its noir influences …

High Risk: Michigan's Coastline In Danger, Adira Jenna Weixlmann
Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted
Practically every summer since I was 10-years-old, my family has been going to Lake Michigan. But how much longer will that last? 31 out of 41 coastal counties of Michigan are considered High Risk Erosion Areas. Though the beaches are currently disappearing rapidly, with proper care, the situation can improve.
Reimagining The Visual Communications Of The Westcott Community Center, Kathryn Jean Marren
Reimagining The Visual Communications Of The Westcott Community Center, Kathryn Jean Marren
Honors Capstone Projects - All
I sought to redesign and reimagine the visual materials produced by the Westcott Community Center, a nonprofit organization that serves the local Westcott area as well as the entire metropolitan Syracuse area. The Westcott Community Center is a venue for classes, dramatic performances, celebrations, community meetings, and more.
The Westcott Community Center has many diverse programs and events and is truly an asset to the community. I wanted to update their materials to convey a sense of cohesiveness as well as a more sophisticated and organized design aesthetic. I redesigned the Center’s logo and volunteer application, created a stationery system, …
Syracuse Spotlight: Building A Greater Performing Arts Community, Alison Rose Mierzejewski
Syracuse Spotlight: Building A Greater Performing Arts Community, Alison Rose Mierzejewski
Honors Capstone Projects - All
Syracuse Spotlight is a performing arts magazine created in part to build a stronger performing arts community for the Syracuse University campus. Since the campus lacks any sort of regular coverage of live performance, I wanted to provide a resource to fill this void in student publicatons. For the most part, the coverage was not in depth, and most of the coverage was solely of the work done by the Syracuse University Drama Department.
With the creation of Syracuse Spotlight, I bring to the university community an outlet for respresentation of all performing arts – both of majors and …
Experience Design, Alexandra Lee Davis
Experience Design, Alexandra Lee Davis
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
This undergraduate research project aims to explore the question: “What is Experience Design(XD)?” and “How can Experience Design be executed in a magazine, both print and online versions?” My methods included extensive research on the history of XD, ethnography of typical magazine users, the study of magazine layout and design principles (both in print and online form) and finally, the execution of an XD-minded print and online digital-comp version of a fashion/lifestyle magazine. I used the Adobe Creative Suite to compile my research into tangible proof of the theory of XD in action. My results proved to be difficult to …
Effective Poster Design, Kaylee S. White
Effective Poster Design, Kaylee S. White
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
It is claimed that a poster has about three seconds to catch the attention of a passer-by. The success of that poster teeters on those few seconds. If it fails to attract attention, then it is ineffective. However, if it catches the interest of its viewer, then half of the battle is won. Having caught attention, the poster must next deliver a swift, effective, convincing message, which then leads the viewer to a desired thought or action. Quite an ambitious to-do list for one poster, right? Quickly arrest the attention of the viewer, deliver a swift clear message, effectively accomplish …

Local Identity, Melissa A. Phizacklea
Local Identity, Melissa A. Phizacklea
Honors Theses
Buying local is the first step preventing numerous economical and environmental issues and is becoming more crucial every moment. Unfortunately, independent businesses face unprecedented competition from larger competitors that enjoy national or international branding power. Local governments, chambers and independent business networks have recently launched hundreds of buy-local campaigns to increase awareness on these issues. Regrettably, most campaigns quickly fade away with little or no impact on shifting local culture.
With this idea in mind I am proposing to explore and develop a permanent local identity that will endorse a number of local brands. This identity highlights the individual local …

2012 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents
Graphic narratives around the world have found lhemselves today beirlg read by certain types of readers. Literature scholars focus on elements such as character and plot structure, occupying their minds with what makes literature great and what some graphic nurratives share with that great literature. With a similar attitude, art historians focus on style, composition, and other artistic elements in graphic narratives that connect them to the art history timeline that goes back to cave paintings. Another type of audience exists, one that does not consider what graphic narratives are and whether they belong to an existing formal area …
Effects Of Augmented Reality Presentations On Consumer's Visual Perception Of Floor Plans, April L. Lutheran
Effects Of Augmented Reality Presentations On Consumer's Visual Perception Of Floor Plans, April L. Lutheran
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
Home architects and designers use many types of presentation drawings to convey design ideas. Augmented reality is a relatively new technology that can be used to aid in design and marketing for residential builders. An augmented reality presentation provides a more complete idea of a design than other presentations such as 3D model renderings and hand drawn artist sketches. While designers are accustomed to visualizing 2D plans, this task is difficult for home buyers. This difficulty has been associated with lower spatial ability in people who are not accustomed to reviewing plans. Augmented reality can be used to make visualization …

Delicious-Ology: The Science Of Delicious Food, Sasha Yan
Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted
You can read this book two ways. If you want to “just cook,” flip to the recipe index, pick a recipe, and skip straight to that page. The surrounding text will explain some aspects of the science behind the recipe. While the recipes in this book are chosen to complement and provide examples of the science, they’re also recipes that are fantastic in and of themselves.

Media Revolution: Early Prints From The Sheldon Museum Of Art, Gregory Nosan, Alison G. Stewart
Zea E-Books Collection
In the digital age, when videos are streamed and books can be read electronically, it is hard to fathom the revolutionary impact that printed images had when they first appeared in Europe around 1400. Their introduction changed forever the traditional practice of manually crafting images one by one, creating a world in which pictures could be reproduced almost without limit on a new material called paper, expanding the possibilities and audiences for images and texts of all kinds. This publication, which brings to light little-seen masterpieces from the Sheldon Museum of Art’s collection, explores the three major print techniques of …
