I love reading stories, but until now, I had never written my own. Balancing the Tangible & Intangible is organized around my experiences and stories, which are inseparable from my work. Together they constellate a narrative of remembrance. Memories surface, and so do connections, allowing for assurance and conviction during a time of personal flux and global unsettledness. This qualitative study used categorizing and theming analysis to learn about how adult students of stained glass and makers of stained glass in a community-based open glass studio understand their experience of working with glass during the CO VID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to acquire an understanding about how working with glass was therapeutic during a pandemic. Open-ended surveys were used to understand the experiences of glass makers (n = 11) and students in a stained-glass studio (n = 26) and their responses were thematically categorized. We all use everyday objects as part of our daily routines, but the way we use them varies from one culture to another. Using George Herbert Mead’s study of human conduct and Louis H. Sullivan’s credo, “Form follows function,” this thesis examines the cultural meanings and implications surrounding the fundamental act of drinking water. Using a methodology of iterative, exploratory making, a collection of glass vessels explores philosophical and physical manifestations of Islamic cultural principles derived from the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم.
