Torso As Ceramic Vessel, Richard Garrett Masterson
Torso As Ceramic Vessel, Richard Garrett Masterson
Dissertations and Theses
The ceramic forms in this thesis project represent a study of the sculptural and figurative qualities of the ceramic process. This study includes a search for a personal form language, development of the slab construction technique, and development of a glazed surface appropriate to the work. The subject of the work is the human torso, with the vessel-like forms focusing on the core of the body as a metaphor for the core of the human spirit.
Neutron Activation Analysis And Chemical Inference For The Identification Of Buena Vista Ceramics, Daniel D. Sullivan
Neutron Activation Analysis And Chemical Inference For The Identification Of Buena Vista Ceramics, Daniel D. Sullivan
Dissertations and Theses
Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis was used for this study of stonewares collected from the site of the Buena Vista/Oregon Pottery Company (1866-1890).
The results show significant chemical signatures in the samples tested. Thorium/ytterbium and thorium/chromium ratios within their respective ranges of variation demonstrate a relative conformity among all samples of Buena Vista ceramics.

Advanced Decorative Ceramics Techniques For High School Students, Deborah Ann Kent
Advanced Decorative Ceramics Techniques For High School Students, Deborah Ann Kent
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis deals with the implementation of luster and underglaze ceramic decorating techniques into the secondary ceramic curriculum. The formation and presentation of this unit is based upon historical and contemporary research of lusters and underglazes, as well as the author's own work with the materials. An instructional unit was designed to fulfill three primary objectives. First, to acquaint the student with the basic materials and techniques; second, to introduce the student to the conceptualization of successful imagery; third, to give the student ample opportunity to explore the uses and possibilities of the materials.
Aboriginal Clay Figurines From The Upper Rogue Valley In Southwestern Oregon, Lyman Patrick Deich
Aboriginal Clay Figurines From The Upper Rogue Valley In Southwestern Oregon, Lyman Patrick Deich
Dissertations and Theses
A study of 80 clay figurines from aboriginal sites in the upper Rogue River Valley in southwestern Oregon fails to reveal any connection with other figurines found in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. A preference for animal rather than human representations is demonstrated. The temporal distribution of the figurines is not known, but spatial distribution appears roughly coextensive with territories occupied by the upland Takelma at the time of Euro-American contact during the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
The Development Of A Clay Body With Compatible Glaze Formulae, Nancy Travers
The Development Of A Clay Body With Compatible Glaze Formulae, Nancy Travers
Dissertations and Theses
There are two aims in this thesis: the first is to ascertain something of the physical and chemical properties of clay and glazes and how to handle and control them. A project such as the development of a clay body and glaze formulae serves to isolate the various functions of the materials and give a clear understanding as to their use and potentials. This enables one to visualize and manipulate materials creatively with a reliable prediction as to their behavior. Spencer Moseley in Art Education supports this, saying: "The quality of a man’s production depends upon (1) the idea, the …
