Primordial, Fel Nikoli Mccoy
Primordial, Fel Nikoli Mccoy
CGU MFA Theses
The culmination of my desire to reconcile with my existence through art is to create myths. Mythology, however fantastical it may be, was once how people conveyed their deepest experiences to one another. I became a mythmaker because I needed to communicate my experience: my efforts to reclaim my indigenous Mexican heritage, my anxieties about surveillance and judgment, and my belief in preserving the lands I live on. The myths I create are mashups of the cultural influences in my life with the intent of understanding my identity and positionality in contemporary society. PRIMORDIAL is a collection of my work …
Ritual And Digital Craftsmanship: Imprudent Practices, Mik Patrik Mcdonnell
Ritual And Digital Craftsmanship: Imprudent Practices, Mik Patrik Mcdonnell
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
This essay explores the role of traditional and digital craftsmanship in my art practice as it relates to provocative imagery. I tackle the question of how my practice is influenced by my audience. My process and products both aim to agitate the ascetic individual. The argument opens on a poetic, personal note, before defining craft/craftsmanship and its social reception according to scholarship. I outline the intended audience for my work being those akin to my mother: christian, middle-aged, and leaning conservative. Because I employ devotional, virtuosic craftsmanship I argue my work is effective at provoking dialogue with these persons who …
Data Narratives: Aesthetic Activation Of Urban Space Through Augmented Reality, Conor Mcgarrigle Dr., John Buckley
Data Narratives: Aesthetic Activation Of Urban Space Through Augmented Reality, Conor Mcgarrigle Dr., John Buckley
Books/Book Chapters
This chapter discusses Data Narratives, a commissioned augmented reality artwork resulting from a period as artist in residence with Dublin City Dashboard. Data Narratives focused on working with city data to create hybrid artistic representations of Dublin’s ongoing housing affordability crisis, acting both as activist artistic engagement with the socio-political-economic space of the city and aesthetic activation of urban space through augmented reality. As data describes and defines so much of our digital every day, the project and residency programme asked how it could be leveraged as a medium for artistic creation and how could art supply new insights …

Honors College Theses
Artist Statement
My work explores the relationship between physical and digital mediums. I aim to create digital images that looks as if they could be a traditional media. I am interested in how the two forms relate to one another and how digital manipulation affects physical artwork. I shoot and develop the black and white photographs used in this work: I am interested in the way that black and white is not just black and white, but many in-between shades as well.
To a digital element, I create glitch gifs from my images and use augmented reality to display these …
Made Of Water, Covered In Mud, Nicole Norman
Made Of Water, Covered In Mud, Nicole Norman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My fixation on water as metaphor is a product of my cosmic design; Scorpio sun, Pisces moon, Pisces rising. I am made of water, begging to be held. Anything liquid has this same desire. I use my art practice to examine the fluidity of physical and digital spaces; how they transform almost constantly. This is only possible through the use of containers that give form to abstract ideas and make them easier to drink (read: digest). Containers can vary in size and shape, but their purpose remains the same. A drinking glass, a swimming pool, a creek bed. These are …
Art In The Data-City: Critical Data Art In The Age Of Surveillance Capitalism, Conor Mcgarrigle
Art In The Data-City: Critical Data Art In The Age Of Surveillance Capitalism, Conor Mcgarrigle
Books/Book Chapters
This chapter considers the role of digital art practice, with an emphasis on the Irish context, in what is described as the data-city, that is a theorisation of this contemporary urban condition so infused with opaque data-driven systems that almost every action is described by and enacted through data. The ubiquitous deployment and action of data assemblages – the networks of hardware and software that enable data-capture regimes – in urban space are changing the nature of the city itself in ways that are not readily apparent. Critical data art practices it is suggested, provide a method to highlight and …
