Body As Instrument: Crafting A Spatial Representational Language For The Dancer's Body, Avery Boland

This project explored the intersection of dance and architecture using choreography, photography, and architectural principles through the development and application of a graphic notation system. Focused on the works of modern dance pioneer Martha Graham and photographer Barbara Morgan, the study tested the representation of the body in space through the use of Graham's choreography as captured by Morgan.
The results of the study demonstrated the effectiveness of the representational language in capturing the spatial dynamics of the human body in Martha Graham's choreography through the notation of “frame” and “plane”. Through a comparative analysis of the selected dances, the …

MOTIVATION In Richmond, there are 1.21 times as many African Americans as any other ethnic group. Yet 63.4% of African Americans live in poverty (Richmond, VA). African Americans face greater exposure to stress due to low socioeconomic status and poverty. In these communities, “discrimination and deprivation undermine individuals’ ability to accumulate the social and material resources to mitigate the effects of stress” (Brondolo, 2018). In this city’s African American community, where stress levels are high and consequential health concerns are prevalent, dance can be a remedy for managing stress and improving health (Hanna, 2006).

Juice was a short-form student publication primarily intended to publicize upcoming events occurring on or around campus. The issue of February 7, 1993 includes art exhibitions, lectures, classes and events relating to Black History Month that occurred on the RISD campus and the Providence area from February 7 through February 14, 1993. Also included is an article from the November 1992 issue of Art Forum magazine. The article is entitled Royal Slumming by Thomas McEvilley and is about the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
