This collection consists of a copy of the narration for the four-part documentary "West Virginia," produced by WNP-TV (Morgantown) public television; accompanied by classroom teacher's guide prepared by Osterman Associates. The narration covers only briefly the life of Native Americans living on the land that would become West Virginia, but focuses on the settlement of West Virginia by Europeans to the 1920s.

Pepper from the “West Virginia Hillbilly” and research notes listing contacts that knew Pepper.

This collection consists of a copy of an approximately 352 page payroll ledger for Etna Iron Works, based in Lawrence County, Ohio. Names of each person being paid are at the top of each page with payments being remitted listed on the page itself. Notes from the person who copied the ledger transcribe some names. Due to the copied nature of this item, legibility is limited. The original ledger is listed as being in the Briggs Public Library in Ironton, Ohio.

This collection consists of a scrapbook containing photographs, newspaper clippings, and ephemera related to the Azalea Garden Club of Huntington and Goodno’s travels as a nationally-recognized flower show judge. Also included in the scrapbook are clippings and snapshots of husband John Alden Goodno, as well as other family photographs. The cover of the scrapbook states, “Reba Garden Awards * Activities, Narcissus Show, Blue Ribbons: JAG – Reba family 1937, Paul/Lucille 1988 club, Wedding invites 1929, Herald dance picture at Barry Seaview Party, Reba family reunion, 1934”. Some of the photographs in the scrapbook are labelled.

These photographs include one photo of the Valentine and Newcomb building, an interior shot from 1936, group shots from company picnics and outings, and other shots including a Huntington High School Group Photo, c. 1940s and a photo of the Nineteenth Annual Banquet, National Retail Dry Goods Association, 1930.

Susan and Geoff Eacker interviewed ten women banjo players throughout August to October 1997 in WV and eastern KY. Interviews include Kate Brett, Diane Jones, Jessica Bills, Lynne Davis (about Molly O’Day), Kim Johnson (including Wilson Douglas), Sylvia O’Brien, Helena Triplett, Pam Lund, Cari Norris, and Dora Mae Wagers. This collection includes ten cassette tapes with the interviews and ten folders of transcripts for each interview.

This collection consists of approximately fifty letters from members of the Smith family, located in Guyandotte, Virginia (or West Virginia, depending on the time), to Julia Sprague in Washington County, Ohio during the Civil War. The bulk of the letters are from Sallie P. Smith to Sprague, and many include their original envelope. Topics are focused on personal life and current affairs.

This collection consists of three diaries describing the daily life of Bertha Casto, wife of physician Thomas Jefferson Casto, while living in Charleston, WV. Topics covered include daily life, especially domestic activities. The final entry was written by Thomas, documenting his wife’s death on January 29, 1938.

This collection consists of 105 oral histories conducted at the behest of the Matewan Development Center, Inc.. Oral histories are on cassette tapes and include transcripts of the oral histories and floppy disks with some of the transcripts saved on them. The oral histories focus on Matewan history, especially labor issues and conflicts surrounding the Matewan Massacre as well as customs and life in Matewan.

This collection consists of a microfilm copy of items selected by Elizabeth Cometti about West Virginia taken from the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, specifically materials taken from the W. R. Redding Papers, 1861-1865 and the William Thomas Sutherlin Papers, 1842-1892. The Redding materials are from 1861 while Redding was stationed in Virginia, to his wife, Elizabeth M. Redding, in Randolph County, Ga.. He discusses camp life, troop movements and skirmishes, and conditions at home. Sutherlin materials date from 1868 to 1869 and may include correspondence and other papers relate to the varied business …

This collection contains two scrapbooks and several loose photographs documenting Mark Freeman’s personal life and time in the United States Navy in the 1950s. The green scrapbook is composed entirely of unidentified and unlabeled photographs of Freeman’s navy service, mostly of photos taken from his ship. Other notable groups of photographs in the scrapbook include photographs of women and sights in Japan. Topics mentioned in the letter include what he was learning and doing in training, social events, and personal matters.

The scrapbook is a repurposed cash book with extensive amounts of clippings, correspondence, and ephemera pasted in. Professional papers include a Turkish-American Association exhibit of stamps between 1961-1965, as well as clippings, white papers, pamphlets, and booklets related to foreign policy and intelligence issues primarily about the U.S.S.R., but also including major powers in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

This collection primarily documents Marcia Myers’ research into female Presbyterian missionaries in Appalachia, particularly West Virginia. Significant in the collection is the correspondence of Helen Desbrow, stationed in Raleigh Co., West Virginia, to her family in New Jersey, regarding her work in the Home Mission between 1922 and 1935, central to Myers’ thesis on female Presbyterian missionaries in Appalachia submitted for her M.Div at Princeton University. Correspondence by Hugh J. May and Frances H.
