This paper provides a review of the historical right of the people of the United States to seek, and use, alternative medicinal treatment options in the realm of managing both the pain and symptoms associated with a variety of illnesses. The focus then turns to the right involved: a patient’s ability to employ medical marijuana instead of a commonly prescribed narcotic or mass-market non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesic (NSAIA) drug to manage pain and increase quality of life under the advice and consent of a treating physician. He attended and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin where his scathing editorials against racism in the South earned him the hatred of university officials. After graduation, he attended Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship. He would join Harper’s Magazine in 1963, rising to become the youngest editor-in-chief in the magazine’s history. For a generation that doesn’t relate to the ‘eighties’, fondly remembers the ‘nineties’, and came of age in the two thousands, we often think of the sixties with a bit of nostalgia; reminiscing about Woodstock, and hippies, the nuclear family or maybe the Beatles. Unfortunately, much of this understanding is isolated within a bubble; wherein the sincere socioeconomic issues of the time, often become detached from their idealistic counterpart. To clarify, the causal relations that gave rise to what my generation remembers and typifies as the ‘sixties’, becomes distorted within the context of the rapidly changing times.

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is a branch of the U.S. Department of Transportation that administers federal funds and provides technical assistance for the support of locally operated public transit systems. MARTA / Atlanta metro area are part of FTA Region IV (the Southeast). FTA would be involved, for instance, in financing the federal grant monies discussed above. But actual regulation of operations (i.e., what MARTA does each day, or what MARTA will plan to do regionally) is more closely regulated by Georgia agencies.

Until recently, the Atlanta metropolitan area had no powerful central agency to coordinate regional transit. The …

Water sources in the United States' New England region are laden with arsenic. Particularly during North America's colonial period--prior to modern filtration processes--arsenic would make it into the colonists' drinking water. In this article, which evokes the biocultural evolution paradigm, it is argued that colonists offset health risks from the contaminant (arsenic poisoning) by ingesting copious amounts of seven spices--cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, vanilla, and ginger. The inclusion of these spices in fall and winter recipes that hail from New England would therefore explain why many Americans associate them not only with the region, but with Thanksgiving and Christmas, …

Many intellectuals were concerned about the social and economic hardships caused by these problems and advocated solving them through emigration. The prominent journalist and a professor of geography at the Tokyo Senmon Gakkô (presently Waseda University), Shiga Shigetaka (1863-1927), believed Hawai’i was an ideal migration destination for the unemployed and impoverished Japanese.

This essay, previously published in the 'Journal of Information Ethics' (1994) is the one that ignited the Stephen B. Oates plagiarism scandal; that story is fully told in the companion book, 'Dishonest Abe Scholarship.' 'Reading between the Texts' is an analysis of parallels between the two Lincoln biographies of the title, arguing that Oates's book was in parts written out of Thomas's, without acknowledgement of the former's work.

Despite Mark Twain's situating the story “forty to fifty years ago” and in a rural river valley, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn closely engaged daily dilemmas and concerns of a Northern, urban, middle-class audience.
