Adolescent Autonomy In Book Selection, Katie Dredger, Zoe Mcdowell
Adolescent Autonomy In Book Selection, Katie Dredger, Zoe Mcdowell
Virginia English Journal
Books that have been on the shelves of classrooms in the commonwealth of Virginia are being removed by overzealous and misinformed parents and school board members. Supporting literacy development means allowing adolescents to read thought-provoking and edgy, high-quality texts, vetted by educated professionals, so that students can be critical curators and consumers of the wide range of media available today. Reading begets better reading, and varied texts build empathy for others. Improved literacy and empathetic criticality will benefit our commonwealth.
Beyond The Bedroom Door: Investigating Representations Of Sex In Young Adult Literature, Amelia Gutche
Beyond The Bedroom Door: Investigating Representations Of Sex In Young Adult Literature, Amelia Gutche
English Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines representations of sex in young adult (YA) fiction, focusing on negative patterns, empowerment, and healthy relationships. Through analysis of seven YA novels and existing scholarship, three research questions are addressed: the evolution of sexual representations in the twenty-first century, patterns characterizing teenage sexual situations, and distinctions between healthy and unhealthy relationships. Findings reveal a shift toward more inclusive and empowering depictions, yet lingering conservative values and silences persist. YA literature often portrays sex as a source of fear and obsession, limiting adolescent power and perpetuating unrealistic ideals. Healthy relationships are characterized by support systems, mutual respect, and …
The Homecoming Game, Olivia Dorothy Daras
The Homecoming Game, Olivia Dorothy Daras
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Homecoming Game follows 16-year-old Ellie as she discovers that growing up is a lot more difficult than she thought it would be. To her horror, high school has become less about getting good grades and more about your popularity status — or so that’s what her best friend tells her. The growing pains of being a teenager and dealing with a not-so-perfect home life culminate when something utterly insane happens: she’s asked to the Homecoming Dance by someone other than the guy she’s been kind of dating. With her social life and personal life in flux, Ellie has to …
The South In Young Adult Literature: Behind Southern Stereotypes, Margaret Martin
The South In Young Adult Literature: Behind Southern Stereotypes, Margaret Martin
English Undergraduate Honors Theses
The United States South has a long, complicated history, and some of its stories have not had the opportunity to be shared. Because of the ways in which the region has been represented stereotypically, many Americans have a misinformed perspective on what it means to live as a Southerner. Due in part to a lack of diversity in the publishing industry, a common phenomenon has been the retelling of the white man and his experiences within the region, as “89% of authors that were published in 2018 were white” (So & Wezerek). Yet because of editorial changes within the last …
Teaching Social Justice Through Gothic Young Adult Literature, Lindsey I. Carman Williams, Ashley S. Boyd
Teaching Social Justice Through Gothic Young Adult Literature, Lindsey I. Carman Williams, Ashley S. Boyd
Language Arts Journal of Michigan
In this article, authors argue that teaching young adult Gothic novels helps secondary students reflect on social justice issues, such as racism and sexism. We selected four young adult novels (The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White, Dark Companion by Marta Acosta, Open Mic Night at Westminster Abbey by Mary Amato, and Black Spring by Alison Croggon) and paired them with Gothic texts (Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Edgar Allan Poe’s tales, Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre) to draw readers’ attention to issues of privilege and oppression . We offer in-class activities …
Muslim Young Adult Graphic Novels : Destabilizing Perceptions, Sidra Habal
Muslim Young Adult Graphic Novels : Destabilizing Perceptions, Sidra Habal
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This paper seeks to analyze common trends in the Muslim Young Adult graphic novels Huda F Are You? by Huda Fahmy and the Ms. Marvel comics by G. Willow Wilson. The main characters, Huda and Kamala, respectively, struggle to define their own identities beyond being Muslim as well as figuring out who they are, who they want to be, and how they wish to represent themselves. The common themes found within these novels include this question of identity as well as exploring family bonds, navigating romantic interests, and building strong groups of friends. These characters are trying to find a …
Young Adult Book Cover Design And Its Impact On Reader Interest, Megan A. Mccullough
Young Adult Book Cover Design And Its Impact On Reader Interest, Megan A. Mccullough
Selected Honors Theses
A book cover is one of the first steps in selling a book and is vital in catching a reader’s attention. Still, many book covers in the young adult fiction market are ineffective at reaching their target audience. Since the birth of young adult books, cover design styles have changed drastically, yet little research has been done. Because of this lack of research, two new surveys were built to investigate what specific elements and styles of current young adult book covers appeal to readers. One survey was for readers, and one survey was for professionals working in the publishing industry. …
“My Brand Is Sick Girl”: Identity Formation In The Young Adult Chronic Illness Novels The Fault In Our Stars And Sick Kids In Love, Natalie Thompson
“My Brand Is Sick Girl”: Identity Formation In The Young Adult Chronic Illness Novels The Fault In Our Stars And Sick Kids In Love, Natalie Thompson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This thesis explores the identities of the chronically ill protagonists in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and Sick Kids in Love by Hannah Moskowitz, specifically by looking at the young protagonist’s self-identity, their relationships with their family members, and the romantic relationship they have with the chronically ill male lead. John Green, who does not identify as chronically ill, writes a novel that ultimately reflects ableist ideas of the medical model of disability, which sees disability as a problem to be solved by medical intervention, and compulsory heterosexuality through the portrayal of Hazel and her relationship with …
Cultures And Colonization In Tamora Pierce's Young Adult Novels, Jessica R. Dube
Cultures And Colonization In Tamora Pierce's Young Adult Novels, Jessica R. Dube
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The content represented in young adult literature can be a shaping force for adolescents as they begin to understand more about themselves and the world around them. Fantasy fiction is especially powerful, as it allows readers to consider issues outside of their own experiences and learn through the characters of a fictional world. This thesis focuses specifically on the works of Tamora Pierce, and the ways in which she represents sociopolitical issues in her fictional world of Tortall. I analyze the ways in which Pierce’s works fulfill Landt’s standards of good multicultural literature, and how the representation she presents can …
Teaching Tolerance Through English Language Arts, Samantha Casarella
Teaching Tolerance Through English Language Arts, Samantha Casarella
Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects
This portfolio examines the ways in which tolerance can be taught and reinforced through English Language Arts. Substantive research is presented justifying the urgency of teaching tolerance at the high school level and the role that English Language Arts teachers play in the process. Methods of practical application are presented through three separate unit plans, each focused on elevating students’ social consciousness.
Body Image/Imagining Bodies: Trauma, Control, And Healing In Graphic Memoirs About Anorexia, Kristine M. Gatchel
Body Image/Imagining Bodies: Trauma, Control, And Healing In Graphic Memoirs About Anorexia, Kristine M. Gatchel
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase of graphic narratives focusing on the intersection of comics and medicine, a subgenre known as graphic medicine. These memoirs, known as graphic pathographies, are written from those who interact with disease in various capacities from patient, to doctor, to caregiver. This project closely examines three graphic pathographies written about the eating disorder anorexia nervosa. Prior writing, both fictional and personal memoir, on anorexia has often been considered as problematic for its ability to function as a how-to manual for anorexics. Anorexia is a complex disease that exists largely within the …
Deaf Characters In Young Adult Literature, Kimberly Gangwish
Deaf Characters In Young Adult Literature, Kimberly Gangwish
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
The multicultural literature movement has its roots in civil rights and the desire to give voice and representation to marginalized cultures. Literature is a societal artifact that can inform and influence the development of cultural identity. Deaf culture is a unique culture that is underrepresented in young adult literature. This underrepresentation places more importance on accurate representations of Deaf culture since young adult fiction may be the only exposure to Deaf culture that both hearing and deaf teenagers may have. Accurate representation in literature is necessary for deaf to see themselves in what they read and for hearing to better …
Narratives Of Sexuality In The Lives Of Young Women Readers, Davin L. Helkenberg
Narratives Of Sexuality In The Lives Of Young Women Readers, Davin L. Helkenberg
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In recent years, research on adolescent sexuality in Young Adult (YA) Literature has included a discussion of its potential role in sex education. Based on the extensive yet problematic presentation of sexuality within these texts, it has gained both support and opposition. However, very few empirical studies have been done on how readers say YA Literature has informed their sexual lives.
This thesis investigates how narratives of sexuality found within YA Literature may inform the sexual lives of young women readers by examining both readers’ experiences and YA texts. First, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 female participants (aged 18 …
A Light In The Dark: A Case For Ya Literature Through The Lens Of Medical Dystopias, Thomas Jace Brown
A Light In The Dark: A Case For Ya Literature Through The Lens Of Medical Dystopias, Thomas Jace Brown
Theses and Dissertations
By examining critical studies of the dystopian genre from Gregory Claeys, Fátima Vieira, and Keith Booker as well as the studies of young adult dystopian novels from Roberta Trites, Kenneth Donnelson, and Sean Connors, I argue that young adult literature (YAL) has literary merit and is worth studying. This literariness stems from a novel's ability to explore complex themes like religion, sacrifice, and societal contracts. I introduce and analyze a subgenre of YA dystopian literature, which I classify as the medical dystopia, a genre that is uniquely positioned to explore the complex moral questions that surround advancing medical technologies and …
Ohio Women Writers Inspire In Ya: A Study Of Three Authors, Their Most Recent Young Adult Texts, And Their Paths To Publication, Genevieve Wadge
Ohio Women Writers Inspire In Ya: A Study Of Three Authors, Their Most Recent Young Adult Texts, And Their Paths To Publication, Genevieve Wadge
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In this project, I will explore the world of YA literature and publishing with a focus on three female authors, Dr. Julie Drew, Rachele Alpine, and Colleen Clayton, and will use their most recently published young adult literature books to further reinforce my research. I will focus on how those texts fit into or go against the current canon of YAL, what common themes these stories touch on, how an adolescent reader might relate to the story and the characters, and other nuances of the texts.
Outsiders To Whom? Reimagining The Creation Of Young Adult Literature In The United States, Kyle W. Eveleth
Outsiders To Whom? Reimagining The Creation Of Young Adult Literature In The United States, Kyle W. Eveleth
Theses and Dissertations--English
The study of young adult literature has become widespread within Children’s and Young Adult Literature specifically and literary studies as a whole. However, the term “young adult” which defines and focalizes both the literature itself and the ostensible readers for whom it is produced remains a poorly-examined area. The present study examines the creation of one branch of what we now call “young adult literature” from its roots in the United States in the early twentieth century to its emergence as a dominant literary form in the mid-to-late 1960s. In doing so, it seeks to reconcile emerging professional, psychological, sociological, …
Searching For Identity: Connecting Students To Young Adult Literature In The Classroom Through Language, Samantha Correia
Searching For Identity: Connecting Students To Young Adult Literature In The Classroom Through Language, Samantha Correia
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Young adult literature largely influences the cultures and the lives of young people; often these popular young adult novels become well-known as they are made into movies and are in high demand. These novels are not just for young adults; these texts can be read at any age and have accessible themes that many people can relate to. However, in this research, young adult literature will be discussed in terms of how these novels affect children, mostly from ages ten to eighteen, as many of the characters in these texts are a similar age to them. Young adult literature (YA …
Building A Strong Chicana Identity: Young Adult Chicana Literature, Rocio Janet Garcia
Building A Strong Chicana Identity: Young Adult Chicana Literature, Rocio Janet Garcia
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This thesis considers the use of Young Adult Chicana Literature in the classroom to help young Chicanas work through their process of finding their identities. It begins by making the case that Chicana identities are complex because of their intersectional borderland positioning between Mexican and U.S. American cultures, which makes the identity formation process more difficult for them than others. By relating these complex issues facing young Chicanas to literature that is more relevant to them and their struggles, it is argued that teachers can help ease some of the tensions that exist within their students and help them work …
Young Adult Literature: Ethics, Evils, And The Ever-Present Question Of Censorship, Alexandria K. Mintah
Young Adult Literature: Ethics, Evils, And The Ever-Present Question Of Censorship, Alexandria K. Mintah
Exigence
This paper explores censorship in regard to young adult (YA) literature, examining the reasons why YA is often censored and how such censored content relates to the mental capabilities and emotional needs of YA’s readership. The author reviews the arguments of both supporters and opponents of censored YA: supporters cite intellectual freedom and adolescent need, claiming the First Amendment protects adolescents’ right to read and that YA books are too valuable to teens’ development to be confiscated. Critics state that YA has become toxic, full of explicit evil, and is therefore unsuitable for adolescent consumption. The author concludes that complete …
An Intersectional Feminist Perspective Of Emmett Till In Young Adult Literature, Claire Jones
An Intersectional Feminist Perspective Of Emmett Till In Young Adult Literature, Claire Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Emmett Till’s murder inspired many novelists, poets, and artists. Recently, Till has inspired several feminist young adult novelists who are introducing his case in an intersectional way to a new generation of readers. The works that I have studied are A Wreath for Emmett Till (2003) by Marilyn Nelson, The Hunger Games Trilogy (2008-2010) by Suzanne Collins, and Midnight without a Moon (2017) by Linda Jackson. By examining how the authors employ a feminist perspective, readers can understand how they are striving for a more inclusive, intersectional feminist movement. This is significant because the publishing industry, specifically for Young Adult …
Where Have All The Rebels Gone? Ideology And Conformity In Young Adult Dystopian Literature, Meghan I. Rimmasch
Where Have All The Rebels Gone? Ideology And Conformity In Young Adult Dystopian Literature, Meghan I. Rimmasch
Theses and Dissertations
By employing the critical studies of adolescence from Nancy Lesko, Roberta Trites, and Maria Nikolajeva and the study of positive and negative symbols of rebellion examined by Robert Lindner through Leerom Medovoi, I will interrogate the popular notion that female protagonists in dystopian Young Adult Literature (YAL) are strong, self-aware rebels who are positive role models to YA readers. Using the didactic nature of dystopian literature, I will examine how adult authors consciously (or unconsciously) set ideological standards for their YA readers through the female protagonists and how these standards are not as empowering as they initially seem. To address …
Young Adult Literature And Empathy In Appalachian Adolescents, Kelsey R. Kiser
Young Adult Literature And Empathy In Appalachian Adolescents, Kelsey R. Kiser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Based on recent research concluding that fiction can increase empathy, this project examines how multicultural young adult literature may encourage empathy in Appalachian adolescents. Empathy encourages prosocial behaviors, but evidence suggests that young adults’ ability to empathize has declined in recent decades. In addition, Appalachia in particular is still a relatively homogenous region as it is majority white, protestant Christian, and heteronormative. Because of this, young adults in Appalachia may encounter few diverse perspectives in real life; multicultural young adult literature can provide diverse perspectives with which teenagers can empathize in a region where they might not have similar opportunities …
Considering The Body: Sexual Agency And Material Selfhood In Alex As Well, Karlie Rodriguez
Considering The Body: Sexual Agency And Material Selfhood In Alex As Well, Karlie Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I examine the tensions between intersex embodiment and trans* identity, intersex children and their parents, and the intimacies that come out of these relationships – which, I argue, are ultimately queer. Using queer, trans*, and intersex theory, as well as feminist new materialisms, I highlight the ways in which the imbrications of the material and the symbolic are presented in Alyssa Brugman’s contemporary Young Adult novel, Alex as Well. The goal of this analysis is to encourage a separation from binary thinking and explore the possibility of nonbinary identifications in literature – more specifically, literature with intersex …
She Wanted It? : Examining Young Adult Literature And Its Portrayals Of Rape Culture, Katy Lewis
She Wanted It? : Examining Young Adult Literature And Its Portrayals Of Rape Culture, Katy Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
At a time when discussions about rape culture appear throughout social media and the news, our ability to consider how literature addresses these social issues is critical. The recent work of scholars discussing rape culture emphasizes the crucial need to consider what many understand (though many also continue to dismiss or diminish) as a serious social issue. While these cultural critiques are worthwhile, my focus shifts these critiques from general (American) culture or society to a particular expression of culture: the young adult novel. In this thesis, I examine how this cultural discourse surrounding rape culture and its related myths …
A Generation Of Katnisses: The New Power Of Female Protagonists In Young Adult Dystopian Literature, Mckenzie K. Watterson
A Generation Of Katnisses: The New Power Of Female Protagonists In Young Adult Dystopian Literature, Mckenzie K. Watterson
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Considering emerging heroines in young adult dystopian fiction, this project first examines them in a literary review. Using feminist ethics of care as a baseline, the review considers their unique worlds, agency, and motivation
Young Adult Authors, Readers, And Feminized Social Media, Margaret R. Kohlmann
Young Adult Authors, Readers, And Feminized Social Media, Margaret R. Kohlmann
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis looks at YA literature, a feminized genre that continues to gain momentum in publishing and popular culture. Specifically, I look at YA authors and their readers’ interactions on social media and the manner in which these conversations are gendered. I argue that YA authors are expected to utilize feminized traits on social media with their readers and fellow authors, but they use same traits to create social change in the genre and industry. This project analyzes three different types of readers: Readers, Reader-Creators, and Bloggers and their interactions with YA authors on social media. My interviews with five …

"Anne Rice For Kids" And Twilight For Tv: Young Adult Media Franchising And The Vampire Diaries, Megan Corinne Connor
"Anne Rice For Kids" And Twilight For Tv: Young Adult Media Franchising And The Vampire Diaries, Megan Corinne Connor
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines The Vampire Diaries as representative of the contemporary state of feminized media franchises, especially those that address young women. The Vampire Diaries exists primarily as a book series and a television series, produced by Alloy Entertainment and The CW Network respectively. Alloy’s production of the franchise, and others like it, connects to the company’s history of feminized media production as a book packager, and is indicative of its current transmedia consumerist model. Further, it underlines the importance of trends and the problematic role of the author in YA literature. The CW’s use of franchises like The Vampire …
“What Have They Done To You Now, Tally?” Post-Posthuman Heroine Vs Transhumanist Scientist In The International Young Adult Series Uglies, Petros Panaou Dr
“What Have They Done To You Now, Tally?” Post-Posthuman Heroine Vs Transhumanist Scientist In The International Young Adult Series Uglies, Petros Panaou Dr
Petros Panaou
This article explores issues of importance to contemporary and future youths, scientists, and societies, as they are expressed in the first three books of the Uglies series, by Scott Westerfeld. A critical approach to transhumanist thought informs an analysis of the conflict between Dr. Cable, a transhumanist scientist, and Tally, the “post-posthuman” adolescent protagonist. This exploration demonstrates how Scott Westerfeld’s story, and perhaps other posthuman narratives, can engage us in useful conversations about what it means to be human, the coming of the posthuman age, and the roles of science and technology in it.
The Ordinary Trip: Heteronormativity And Homophobia In Young Adult Literature From 1969 To 2009, Laurie Barth Walczak
The Ordinary Trip: Heteronormativity And Homophobia In Young Adult Literature From 1969 To 2009, Laurie Barth Walczak
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines books published for and marketed toward teen readers as cultural products and artifacts with the potential and the power to help shape young readers' ideas and understandings of the world, culture, and society around them in order to identify and investigate hegemonic forces or ideological apparatuses at play in young adult literature. From among the earliest young adult novels with characters who depict diverse gender and sexual identities, such as John Donovan's I'll Get There. It Better Be Worth Trip. in 1969, to the most contemporary, including Nick Burd's The Vast Fields of Ordinary in 2009, the …
