Srad Director's Corner: Us Army War College Russia-Ukraine War Study Project, Eric Hartunian
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
The Strategic Studies Institute at the US Army War College is analyzing the operational events and activities of the Russia-Ukraine War to understand the war’s strategic implications for the US Army and its role within the NATO Alliance. Analysis will further inform theater and national US strategy and may benefit Army doctrine and concepts vis-à-vis the Russian threat. It will also examine how US and allied defense policies should adjust to the current character of war. Lessons learned from Ukraine are relevant to the evolving challenge in the Pacific in the near term and are opportunities for the United States …

From Design To Denial- An Environmental Histroy Of The United States Chemical Weapons Program, William Nelson Connelly Iii
From Design To Denial- An Environmental Histroy Of The United States Chemical Weapons Program, William Nelson Connelly Iii
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
In 1993, the affluent Washington D.C. neighborhood of Spring Valley was unaware of what lurked beneath their carefully manicured lawns and million-dollar homes. Contractors hired by a resident to build an inground pool suddenly found themselves short of breath and half the crew had to be rushed to the hospital suffering respiratory distress, internal blistering of the lungs, and vision problems. The symptoms they exhibited matched all the characteristics of the World War I era blister agent lewisite. This thesis is an environmental study of chemical weapons that aims to contribute to the overall history of these weapons and their …
Fighting Tigers With A Stick: An Evaluation Of U.S. Army Recruitment, Training, And Their Combat Outcomes In The Korean War, Jonathan Banks
Fighting Tigers With A Stick: An Evaluation Of U.S. Army Recruitment, Training, And Their Combat Outcomes In The Korean War, Jonathan Banks
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
After the Korean War, most people regarded the performance of the U.S Army in that conflict as largely checkered. It had not once, but twice retreated disgracefully, losing to theoretically inferior third world armies. Its soldiers often performed poorly, not just in battle, but also prison camps. Many scholars, military commentators, and journalists have since tried to dissect the failures of the U.S. Army in Korea. Some have examined whether or not American GIs received proper combat training before and during the war. Indeed, problems existed with American infantry training before and during the early phases of the Korean War. …
So Others May Live: The Price Of Healthcare In Combat, Robert Del Toro
So Others May Live: The Price Of Healthcare In Combat, Robert Del Toro
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
“Medics carried more responsibilities than dry feet, salt tablets, syphilis, and puncture wounds,” U.S. Army Medic Ben Sherman stated after reflecting on his tour in Vietnam. On the battlefields of North Africa, Italy, France, and Vietnam, the medics of the U.S. Army Medical Department faced the difficult duty of preserving life while death surrounded them. Their patients were not strangers but, men they had grown close to, they were comrades and family. Analyzing the memoirs and letters of forward medical personnel from the Second World War and the Vietnam War, this thesis analyzes how a medic’s care went beyond the …

The Fighting Blue Ridgers: Combined Arms Capabilities Of The Us Army's 80th Infantry Division In World War Ii, 1944-1945, Brannon Price
Master's Theses
This study of the Second World War examines the tactics employed by the 80th Infantry Division of the United States Army in the European Theater of Operations in 1944 and 1945. Early historiography portrays American units as brave but less sophisticated than their German adversaries. However, recent scholarship praises American combat capabilities. Drawing largely upon official Army records and firsthand accounts from American soldiers, this thesis argues that the 80th Infantry Division developed into a highly effective fighting force in the European Theater when it properly employed the concept of combined arms (the coordination of infantry, artillery, and armor) on …

Will War's Nature Change In The Seventh Military Revolution?, F. G. Hoffman
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article examines the potential implications of the combinations of robotics, artificial intelligence, and deep learning systems on the character and nature of war. The author employs Carl von Clausewitz’s trinity concept to discuss how autonomous weapons will impact the essential elements of war. The essay argues war’s essence, as politically directed violence fraught with friction, will remain its most enduring aspect, even if more intelligent machines are involved at every level.

Victory's Foundation: Us Logistical Support Of The Allied Mediterranean Campaign, 1942-1945, David D. Dworak
History - Dissertations
From November 1942 until May 1945, the Allied nations fought a series of campaigns across the Mediterranean. Ever since, historians have debated the role and impact of the Mediterranean theater upon the greater war in Europe. Through analysis of official archival documents, unit histories from the period, and personal memoirs, this dissertation investigates the impact of US Army service forces on each of the campaigns and operations conducted across the Mediterranean theater. Additionally, this study examines how the campaigns of the Mediterranean shaped and informed the 1944 landings in France and the subsequent drive into Germany. This dissertation argues that …
