In order to address issues of isolation in the wake of a global pandemic, this thesis examines the nature of the connection between food and community through commensality. “Commensality” is defined as the practice of eating together, which has demonstrable health benefits on personal, interpersonal, and psychological levels. Research reveals that, while commensality has been a foundational tenet of society since civilization’s beginnings, instances of commensality appear to be at an all time low for modern Americans. The results are diminished mental health, undeveloped support networks, and missed opportunities for emotional connection. All of these may be thought of as …

As of late, there has been debate about the importance of recognizing women in agriculture as farmers. The demand to be recognized is backed by women’s significant contribution to the household economy. Scholars have attempted to establish a correlation between land ownership and women’s empowerment in agriculture. The purpose of this study was to examine two previous studies, which concluded that music educators felt stressed about mainstreaming students with disabilities. Using applied research method, a twenty-five-item questionnaire, created by the current researcher, was conducted, and six general music educators participated answering twenty-five categorized questions. The questions were divided into three sections: background, teaching context, and stress. The study examined current resources for music educators’ while working in a mainstreaming setting with students with disabilities. The scores indicated a moderate to high stress level in the classroom due to the lack of resources provided. A mean was found …

Adult ESL community learners are a fast-growing and diverse group of individuals. This paper explores the historical implications of race in American society that have led to implicit racism in the healthcare system. Racial bias in healthcare against Black people is a factor in the health disparities between Black and white people in America, such as the gap in life expectancy, infant death, and maternal mortality. Black people are more likely to report racial discrimination from healthcare providers, which is a reason for the decreased quality of care received. This paper addresses the issue of housing instability low-income families face and the ways the community can help. The issue is prevalent in the Lafayette community and beyond. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization working to raise awareness of housing instability in our community, specifically through the ReStore of Lafayette. The ReStore is run solely on the community’s donations and volunteer work. All proceeds from the store go to building affordable houses for low-income families. This dissertation explores the accounts of educators and parents regarding the accessibility of American Sign Language (ASL) and its acquisition by deaf children in Ontario, Canada. It is generally known that deaf children’s ASL acquisition and proficiency is directly affected by their early exposure to the language; the earlier and greater the exposure, the greater the acquisition and proficiency, while later and inadequate exposure results in poorer acquisition and proficiency. Ethnic Power Dominance In A Resource-Rich Sub Saharan African State: An Analysis Of Violent Conflict Accelerators And The Mitigating Influence Of Civil Society In Nigeria, Victor O. Fakoya

My dissertation research explores the impacts of ethno-regional power dominance, trust, and violent conflict in a resources-rich multiethnic, sub-Saharan African state. This dissertation examines the impact that ethnic power dominance has on the relationship between conflict and civil society in a resource rich sub-Saharan African (SSA) nation examined. Relying upon intra-state case study analysis of the socio-political climate in Nigeria, I argue that distrust in the national government, when motivated by ethno-regional cleavages has an accelerating influence on the incidence of conflict. Using cross-national survey data in conjunction with field interview data, this research finds that in the regions where …

Many undocumented survivors of domestic violence in New York City struggle to gain access to resources they need to survive due to their undocumented status. City officials tell them that help is available at the Family Justice Centers located in all five boroughs. But some undocumented survivors say they don’t get all the help they need. These victims and survivors bring with them the scars of abuse from their exes, to seek help from the city.

This research focused on the forms and structure of customary political organization in Quechua indigenous communities of the Peruvian Andes that extend from the villages to their associated migrant communities in the capital. As the mining industry has been expanding rapidly throughout the Andes in recent decades, describing the political organization of these remote communities is a key aspect of their negotiation practices with these external industries. In this paper the author delves into the hesitations a new writing tutor may feel by examining his own personal experiences. He discuss the necessity of using all of the sources offered to tutors, such as Internet references, assignment descriptions, and reference guides. Using these resources builds the tutor’s credibility, along with providing assurance to the tutor that he or she is guiding the student correctly. Demonstrating that tutors refer to these resources for help also strengthens the tutors’ relatability as peers, and this will help create a more comfortable tutoring session for the student.
