Reflections Of Nephi's Vision In His Psalm, John A. Tvedtnes Mar 2023

Reflections Of Nephi's Vision In His Psalm, John A. Tvedtnes

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Second Nephi 4:16-35 comprises a beautiful psalm written by Nephi. Portions of the psalm suggest that he was contemplating his earlier vision of the tree of life and the future of his people, recorded in 1 Nephi 11-14. Among the elements common to both the psalm and the vision are the appearance of angels in visions, mention of the condescension of God, temptations, the devil (" evil one") and hell, and the straight path.

Reflections, Kiera Baity

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

"Reflections" explores experiences in my life revolving around my absent father's influence on my choices in men, and how the impact of absence and rejection altered my upbringing and family's dynamic as a whole. There are a lot of women out there like me who’ve blocked out the feelings that come with not having their father around, allowing room for the generations after to be affected. I wanted my story to connect with both childhood and adult women, inspiring them to face their own trauma. Ultimately proving how an unhealthy repetitiveness can be broken.

This research covers in a very careful reading the poetry book of (Mr. Mohammad Ahmed Al-Ammad), which was published after being audited and verified by a respected committee composed from number of teachers from the department of Arabic Language, Faculty of Arts, An-Najah National University.

We tried in this work to do the correction and remedial work for language and prosodic mistakes which were very huge in number, still the poems were very excellent and valuable, but, these mistakes disfigured its language rhythms. In our correction and remedial work we depended on number of Arabic language dictionaries, our long scientific …

Connections: Life, Memories, And Metaphors Through The Window, Cindra Lyn Ross Jun 2020

Connections: Life, Memories, And Metaphors Through The Window, Cindra Lyn Ross

MFA in Visual Arts Theses

Abstract

Photographic imagery can transport a person mentally and emotionally to another place or another time, and create connections to people, memories, or experiences. A photograph can also conjure emotions or serve as a metaphor for something wholly unrelated to the image but triggered in our minds by our own history and impression of the image. Photographs can capture transitions and expanses of time by showing the movement of light, or via comparison in a series of images taken over periods of time.

My work has evolved to incorporate a series of images that focus on windows. Throughout the history …

"Christian Traditions, Culture, And Law": An Update And A Few Reflections, Robert F. Cochran Jr. Mar 2020

"Christian Traditions, Culture, And Law": An Update And A Few Reflections, Robert F. Cochran Jr.

Pepperdine Law Review

Using Richard Niebuhr’s description of Christian approaches to culture, this Article examines the way Christians approach law, focusing on developments over the last 20 years. During that time, synthesists have continued to develop natural law, seeking an understanding of law based on shared human goods and reason, an approach that can generate a common approach among people of all faiths and no faith. Conversionists, including those on both the political left and right, argue for changes in law that will reflect Christian understandings of the good. Separatists (including many former conversionists) argue that American culture and law have become so …

What If Anything Still Meant Something, Andrea Munive Mar 2020

What If Anything Still Meant Something, Andrea Munive

CGU MFA Theses

My drawings are active reflections of my surroundings and their intrinsic relationship to the ideal and banal. My surroundings have encompassed my memories and present, revealing a sense of slow time and peripheral consciousness.

What If Anything Still Meant Something is about this duality of care and disregard- an eternal mental state it seems.

Alejandro Napolitano Jawerbaum's Portfolio, Alejandro Jorge Napolitano Jawerbaum Jan 2020

Alejandro Napolitano Jawerbaum's Portfolio, Alejandro Jorge Napolitano Jawerbaum

Honors College Portfolios

This portfolio is a journey through my process in these first two years at Duquesne. I decided to do this now rather than later because I'm finishing my philosophy Honors Thesis and my computer science senior project, which is also a thesis, and in the following semesters I will be focusing on mathematics and computer science.

The writings are varied, reflecting the fact that I am pursuing three majors and two minors. The order will reflect my progression, but will generally correspond to topics. First will be my 'simpler' writings as I began my studies here, and are mostly composed …

Going In Thinking Process, Coming Out Transformed: Reflections And Recommendations From A Qualitative Research Course, Donald Mitchell Jr., Elizabeth Byron, Jeffrey Cross, Oj Oleka, Stephanie Van Eps, Phyllis Clark, Natalie Sajko

Faculty Publications

This article presents reflections and suggestions of an instructor and students from a doctoral-level qualitative research course. Given qualitative research courses often lack guidance for best practices and the well-being of doctoral students learning qualitative research is often overlooked, the purpose of this article is threefold: 1) to provide an introductory skeleton for designing a qualitative research course that is structured for classmates to interview each other throughout the semester, what the authors call a student-as-researcher-and-participant design; 2) to provide student reflections from the course; and finally, 3) to offer recommendations for using a student-as-researcher-and participant design for a qualitative …

Seeking Glimpses: Reflections On Doing Archival Work, Alex Hanson, Stephanie Jones, Thomas Passwater, Noah Wilson Jul 2018

Seeking Glimpses: Reflections On Doing Archival Work, Alex Hanson, Stephanie Jones, Thomas Passwater, Noah Wilson

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article explores the role of archival research in understanding and generating social histories from the perspectives of four different doctoral students as they reflect on their archival research experiences. We argue that archival research is complex, subjective, contextual, and at times, incomplete. Our various perspectives address ideas of privilege, representation, what it means to remember (or forget), how archives are constituted and reconstituted, and where we can make meaning in archival spaces. This article demonstrates that although archival research has had a presence in Composition and Rhetoric for some time, that presence is continually shifting, and even when embarking …

Old: A Personal Essayist’S Reflections Of An Aging Adult, Marcia Irene Taylor Jan 2018

Old: A Personal Essayist’S Reflections Of An Aging Adult, Marcia Irene Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation opens with a critical introduction that examines the role persona, reader, and implication play in the composition of the personal essay. Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory is then applied as a tool in an essayist’s exploration of how one’s communication choices impact life experiences. This section is followed by an explanation of the subject matter of the essays. The pedagogical chapter addresses the author’s experience with the student-centered teaching of a first creative writing class, lessons learned, theorists who affected the process, and suggestions for improvement as the author moves forward in postsecondary teaching. The dissertation concludes with …

From The Horses' Mouths: Reflections On Transition From Peer Leaders, Bonnie Amelia Dean, Kathryn Harden-Thew, Kylie S. Austin, Melissa A. Zaccagnini

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

World-wide peer learning programs support students in their transition to university. Peer leader support is distinctive, being closer to the learning experience or transition encountered. This paper explores transition into the first year of university through the reflections of peer leaders. It outlines two synergetic programs at the University of Wollongong (UOW): one supporting high school students in the early stages of transition to university (In2Uni); and the second supporting enrolled university students (PASS). Focus groups were conducted to elicit the voices of leaders reflecting on their own transition and experiences of mentoring peers through transition. The findings suggest peer …

‘The Triumph Of Green Hearts Over Sere’: Reflections On Student Radicalism At Sydney University In The 1910s And The 1960s’, Terence H. Irving

Terry Irving

At the end of the paper I sketch an argument for considering these two periods together, but I want to begin on a personal note. For some time I’ve been writing about left intellectuals in the early twentieth century, one of whom is Gordon Childe, and in the course of researching his undergraduate years at Sydney University between 1911 and 1913 I made a couple of interesting discoveries about student radicalism. I discovered the existence of a University Socialist Society in 1910 and 1911, a fact that nullified Alan Barcan’s claim in his book, Radical Students, that political clubs did …

Conclusion: Reflections On The Rhythms Of Internationalisation In Post-Disaster Japan, Vera Mackie

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

On 7 Jul 2012. a concert was held at Makuhari Messe near Tokyo. The concert was part of a growing movement against nuclear power in the wake of the triple earthquake-tsunami-nuclear disaster in northeastern Japan on 11 March 2011. The headline performers were the Japanese band Yellow Magic Orchestra and the German band Kraftwerk. Since the earliest days of Yellow Magic Orchestra. band leader Sakamoto Ryuichi has forged an international career as a performer and composer, moving between Tokyo, New York and other global cities. In recent years, he has used his public profile to argue for environmental sustainability, so …

Six Ideal Types Of Public Engagement With Science And Technology: Reflections On Capital, Legitimacy And Models Of Democracy, Nicola J. Marks Jan 2013

Six Ideal Types Of Public Engagement With Science And Technology: Reflections On Capital, Legitimacy And Models Of Democracy, Nicola J. Marks

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

A number of researchers have been analysing apparent shifts from top-down approaches to public engagement with science and technology towards more participatory ones. Some have revealed the existence of often unacknowledged assumptions about how science and public should interact. These normative visions shape public engagement and may go against any shift towards inclusiveness. To further probe this, interviews with 41 stem cell scientists were carried out. They reveal diverse normative visions of publics, scientists, dialogue, relevant technical and political capital, and scientific citizenship. From this, six ideal types of public engagement with science and technology are constructed and connected to …

Reflections On 'Wang's Paradox', John A. Burgess Jan 2013

Reflections On 'Wang's Paradox', John A. Burgess

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

In this paper, I shall try to spell out what I take the principal general morals of Michael Dummett's 'Wang's Paradox' to be, not as Dummett himself saw them, but as I see them several decades later. I draw two main conclusions. (C1): Meaning should not be represented as propositional knowledge capable of being acquired through book learning alone. Some aspects of meaning consist of items of practical knowledge that resist representation as theoretical knowledge. (C2): Vagueness cannot be modelled in a semantic individualist framework.

Edmund Burke’S Aims In Publishing Reflections On The Revolution In France (1790), Stephen Carruthers Jan 2011

Edmund Burke’S Aims In Publishing Reflections On The Revolution In France (1790), Stephen Carruthers

Articles

In this paper, I examine three critical aspects of Burke's beliefs, principles, and political judgment at the time of the outbreak of the French Revolution and examine how they assist in explaining different and less public strands in his motivation to publish the Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790): his views on religion and in particular his attitude to Dissenters; the state of his political career and inf1uence in 1789 as a semi-detached member of the Foxite Whigs; and finally how he saw the publication of the ideas and arguments in the Reflections as a necessary step to maintain …
