The Spread Of Quranic Sciences And Recitation In Lebanon, Ziad Hajj, Fatima Mourad

Al Jinan

The Mediated Qur’An: Religious Education And Recitation Via Online Distance Learning In The Sultanate Of Oman, Lauren Osborne

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

This article considers the role of media in relation to memorization and recitation of the Qur’an and modern religious education. Specifically, it considers the example of the online program of distance learning for recitation and memorization of the Qur’an as developed and maintained under the auspices of the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs in the state of Oman in the Arab Gulf region. The online learning program presents an example of how religious education in Oman both has a long history at the same time that it draws on modern media practices. Even further, it does so in the …

A Wood Comes Toward Dunsinane: The Synthesis Of Traditional And Constructivist Methodologies, Randall L. Kaplan

Language Arts Journal of Michigan

Education professionals now favor Constructivist and project-based strategies for learning over Traditional methods, which include such frowned upon practices as rote memorization and recitation. The Constructivist approach is being taken to its natural apex by educators like Larry Rosenstock who have created Constructivist utopias such as High Tech High in San Diego, the school put under the microscope in the 2015 documentary film Most Likely to Succeed. Project-based, experiential units of study are effective, exciting, and edifying for both students and teachers. They promise to prepare students for the type of world they will inhabit, a world whose economy …

Enlightening The Bats: Sound And Place Making In Burmese Buddhist Practice, Andrew Dicks Nov 2015

Enlightening The Bats: Sound And Place Making In Burmese Buddhist Practice, Andrew Dicks

Andrew Dicks

In Burma (Myanmar), the Abhidhamma, a rigorous and abstract soteriological treatise situated within the vast Pali Buddhist canon, is the focus of both monastic and lay practitioners’ close study and popular veneration. In particular, the Paṭṭhāna, the last and most complex volume of the Abhidhamma, is envisioned as a keystone in the long-term preservation of the Buddha’s teachings, which are also understood to inevitably disappear. As a result of these conditions and understandings, a popular ritualized and amplified recitation of this difficult text has developed in order to maintain the text’s presence in popular consciousness. This is a conscientious move …

La Parole Et Ses Impossibles, Guillaume Pigeard De Gurbert Dec 2013

La Parole Et Ses Impossibles, Guillaume Pigeard De Gurbert

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Chamoiseau’s literature attempts to articulate three impossibilities: to name what is indescribable, that is the “unhuman”; to tell the story of newly discovered living things; and to describe the original silence from outside. Thus, words are expressed through hiccoughs, traces and through words like “disons” which express inertia or sing the powers of the living and mumble the impotence of being.
