The History Of Coffee And Its Concurrent Marketing Strategies, Kristin Rudeen Apr 2018

The History Of Coffee And Its Concurrent Marketing Strategies, Kristin Rudeen

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

This thesis explores how the advertising of coffee has evolved over the past three centuries by comparing the timing of historical events with their concurrent coffee advertisements and the corresponding popularity of coffee and its evolving variations. I have conducted primary research by analyzing coffee advertisements in newspapers, commercials, magazines, and on social media. I have used this research to determine when companies initiated different approaches in order to advertise their coffee. Additionally, I discuss how work culture played a role in the methods coffee producers and companies used to reach their consumers. More specifically, I have identified five different …

Milk Nutrition And Perceptions, Alyssa C. Katz Apr 2018

Milk Nutrition And Perceptions, Alyssa C. Katz

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

In today's society many people are making the move to become vegan and/or dairy free. According to the US National Library of Medicine, approximately 65% of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose. The rise in veganism and an increasing awareness of lactose intolerance have combined to create a non-dairy movement. This paper will address reasons people choose to cut milk out of their diet or not, and will investigate the effects and benefits of milk.

Many articles show milk to be very beneficial to the diet. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition believes that many vitamins, …

The Feminization Of Baking And Pastry Work: Dissecting Gender Roles In The Foodservice Industry, Alexis Szmodis Mar 2018

The Feminization Of Baking And Pastry Work: Dissecting Gender Roles In The Foodservice Industry, Alexis Szmodis

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

Although the foodservice industry creates livelihood for Americans of all genders, races, age, and backgrounds, conflict arises as language, media, and the established masculine kitchen culture continue to reinforce traditional gender roles. Aside from the common difficulties in kitchen workplaces, women chefs surveyed emphasize the discrimination felt in regard to their recognition, compensation, and support. Many writers and chefs discuss how the foodserivce industry claims gender no longer impacts one’s success, but fail to recognize the subliminal ways gender roles impact the workplace. Research shows women remain in all areas of the food industry despite the challenges of the environment, …

How Does The Psychology Of Loneliness Affect The Desire To Travel Alone?, Zoe M. Myers Feb 2018

How Does The Psychology Of Loneliness Affect The Desire To Travel Alone?, Zoe M. Myers

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

Do feelings of loneliness affect an individual’s desire to participate in solo travel? There has been extensive research done on the psychology of loneliness: how it is defined, its effects on a person’s mental health, possible explanations for its causes, and what can be done to resolve the emotion. Regarding solo travel, the act of traveling alone has experienced an immense growth in the past decade. However, there has been little to no research completed regarding an explanation as to why many people still have no desire to travel alone. Do these people typically have a greater sense of loneliness …

Providential Capitalism: Heavenly Intervention And The Atlantic’S Divine Economist, Ian F.P. Green Jun 2017

Providential Capitalism: Heavenly Intervention And The Atlantic’S Divine Economist, Ian F.P. Green

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Providential capitalism names the marriage of providential Christian values and market-oriented capitalist ideology in the post-revolutionary Atlantic through the mid nineteenth century. This is a process by which individuals permitted themselves to be used by a so-called “divine economist” at work in the Atlantic market economy. Backed by a slave market, capital transactions were rendered as often violent ecstatic individual and cultural experiences. Those experiences also formed the bases for national, racial, and classed identification and negotiation among the constellated communities of the Atlantic. With this in mind, writers like Benjamin Franklin, Olaudah Equiano, and Ukawsaw Gronniosaw presented market success …

Human Evolution And Divine Agency, Alexandra Rakestraw May 2017

Human Evolution And Divine Agency, Alexandra Rakestraw

Dialogue & Nexus

Modern Christians often find themselves at a crossroads when confronted with the two predominant understandings of human and universal origins. Plain sense readings of Genesis lead many to believe in a historical six-day creation that occurred in the past ten thousand years while proponents on the other side of the spectrum use current scientific understanding to support a creation that occurs through evolutionary means. How one views human origins has a profound impact on one’s concept of how God works in the cosmos. In this paper, I will lay out a background to better understand the characters of Adam and …

The Spirit Of A Weak God: Reimagining Divine Providence After The Critique Of Ontotheology, Wendy Theresa Crosby Jan 2017

The Spirit Of A Weak God: Reimagining Divine Providence After The Critique Of Ontotheology, Wendy Theresa Crosby

Dissertations

The question of this dissertation is whether and how divine providence can function within the framework of a weak God theology. While theories of divine providence traditionally depend on a powerful God capable of bringing all to a good end, I argue that providence remains essential to Christian hope and participation even if God is rethought as weak. This dissertation develops a concept of providence within weak God theology through an understanding of the Holy Spirit which is non-totalizing and dependent on creation's response. Therefore, providence empowers human action rather than ensuring victory despite our actions.

The dissertation begins by …

Edward Mitchell Bannister And The Aesthetics Of Idealism, Traci Lee Costa Jan 2017

Edward Mitchell Bannister And The Aesthetics Of Idealism, Traci Lee Costa

Art and Architectural History Theses

Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828–1901)—a Canadian-born, black painter who enjoyed a thirty-year career in Providence, Rhode Island—experienced racial discrimination throughout his life and historical marginalization following his death. His identity as an African American during the era of Emancipation and Reconstruction has framed the present understanding of his contribution to the American landscape tradition. This one-dimensional approach neglects his varied intellectual and professional endeavors, as well as his unique position as a freeborn, black artist. Bannister’s manuscript, The Artist and His Critics (1886), indicates that he developed an artistic theory around the philosophies of German Idealism and American Transcendentalism, inspired by …

Paul Helm's "Compatibilist" View Of Divine Providence In Light Of The Frankfurtian Debate., Simon Sang-Kyun Ko

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

It is easy to find in prominent scholarly opinion today that to maintain its comprehensive divine determinism the Reformed Christian tradition must endorse metaphysical compatibilism to affirm some semblance of creaturely freedom. Arguably, one of the two Reformed scholars who have promulgated this idea the most is Paul Helm. Interestingly, while Helm’s “no-risk” view of divine providence started off with pretty straightforward classical compatibilism, it has since morphed into what is akin to source incompatibilism. At the heart of this transformation is Helm’s increasing interest in the feasibility of “irreducible agency, despite the fixity of the future” (or to use …

Hamlet Reinvents Himself, William Walsh Jan 2015

Hamlet Reinvents Himself, William Walsh

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

We see the early modern as an open carry society. Hamlet’s success in the swordplay at the end is usually seen as his triumph, fulfilling his father’s injunction at last. The 2013 RSC production of Hamlet projected ambiguity, which I share. The most intriguing angle was Hamlet’s costume. Jonathon Slinger very quickly donned half of a fencing jacket; but the straps of the jacket dangled, strongly suggesting a straight jacket. Half mad, half resolute, Hamlet is driven through much of the play until, I will argue, he reinvents himself as a mad version of divine providence. The providential idea is …

Inscrutable Providence: The Doctrine Of Divine Concurrence And The Theology Of Charles Hodge., Nathan J. Archer Jan 2015

Inscrutable Providence: The Doctrine Of Divine Concurrence And The Theology Of Charles Hodge., Nathan J. Archer

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation will discuss the doctrine of concurrence within the larger doctrine of providence. Although concurrence was once a key component of the doctrine of providence, it was difficult to maintain in a post-enlightenment theological and philosophical context, even for a Reformed thinker such as Charles Hodge. Although Hodge labored to explain the older formulation of this doctrine—especially as articulated by Francis Turretin—Hodge found concurrence problematic and did not commend its use. In addition to shifting philosophical sensibilities, concerns regarding pantheism were a significant reason why some nineteenth-century American Calvinists distanced themselves from concurrence. Nonetheless, Hodge’s theology stands largely in …

"Can't Nobody Fly With All That Stuff": Exploring Representations And Standards Of Black Patriarchal Masculinity In Television, Film, And Music, Chloe Marshall May 2014

"Can't Nobody Fly With All That Stuff": Exploring Representations And Standards Of Black Patriarchal Masculinity In Television, Film, And Music, Chloe Marshall

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

This project explores representations of Black masculinity in television, music, and cinema. I analyze specific genres of each medium that display images of masculinity seen by a variety of audiences. From these images, I derive character types that I analyze using R.W. Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity. Ultimately, I draw conclusions about the media's contributions to a greater hegemonic model of masculinity for young Black males. The consequences of hegemony and patriarchal power are discussed as examples of how mainstream societal standards of gender identity are damaging to the progress of Black communities.

Beyond The Wine Menu: Understanding Flavor And Taste Perception As A Factor In Pairing Wine And Dessert, Cristina Vazquez May 2014

Beyond The Wine Menu: Understanding Flavor And Taste Perception As A Factor In Pairing Wine And Dessert, Cristina Vazquez

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

My thesis will explore vinotypes, a method used to distinguish a wine taster’s sensitivity, which will be defined further, and an understanding of the physiology of taste and flavor perceptions in pairing wines with desserts. I will explore this topic by examining the evolution of man’s original perception of wine throughout history, leading to how wine is perceived today. Specifically, I will focus on the three prevailing theories, which will help me identify the main factors in creating a successful pairing. The first theory is based on sommelier Francois Chartier’s understanding of how molecular gastronomy affects one’s flavor perception. I …

Social Activism With Extra Sauce: How Food Communication Increases Political Awareness In Social Media, Amy Demello May 2014

Social Activism With Extra Sauce: How Food Communication Increases Political Awareness In Social Media, Amy Demello

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

This project explores the combination of social media and food communication and challenges the prevailing belief that food on social media is trivial, frivolous, and unmeaning. This paper will explain why social media, as well as food communication, are both influential and powerful tools for activism. To prove this, I analyze Twitter posts through Storify. Ultimately, I draw conclusions about the influence of food in activism on social media. The lack of and restrictions on data available are discussed as examples of how valuable and crucial this information is, ultimately displaying that social media is not as democratic as currently …

Time, History, And Providence In The Philosophy Of Nicholas Of Cusa, Jason Aleksander May 2014

Time, History, And Providence In The Philosophy Of Nicholas Of Cusa, Jason Aleksander

Faculty Publications

Although Nicholas of Cusa occasionally discussed how the universe must be understood as the unfolding of the absolutely infinite in time, he left open questions about any distinction between natural time and historical time, how either notion of time might depend upon the nature of divine providence, and how his understanding of divine providence relates to other traditional philosophical views. From texts in which Cusanus discussed these questions, this paper will attempt to make explicit how Cusanus understood divine providence. The paper will also discuss how Nicholas of Cusa’s view of the question of providence might shed light on Renaissance …
