Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections
This essay seeks to present a historic overview of this relationship as it developed between the 1960s and 1970s and showcase how certain events impacted this development. Canada has had a steadily growing economic relationship with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) since the latter’s reform and opening up policy under Deng Xiaoping in 1978. The development of this relationship was not a forgone conclusion, as Cold War tensions initially heightened ideological tensions between Maoist China and capitalist democracies like Canada. The path of normalization was impacted by both domestic and international events involving both Canada and the PRC, which …

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
This paper is a research paper designed to explain how Covid-19 is a wicked problem. I talk about the symptoms that Covid-19 can cause and how this disease does not affect everyone the same way. I talk about the death count from Covid-19 and the statistics behind it. I then talk about how the news has not informed the people correctly on how to prevent the spread of the virus and how it is being handled, because all major news networks are fueled by political views. I talk about the bipartisan views our country has and why it is so …

Analysis Of Information Genres In National Journalism Of Colonial Turkestan (Uzbekistan), Khalim Saidov Candidate Of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, Theory And Practice Of International Journalism Department
Philology Matters
The foundation of periodicals in Turkestan during the Tsarist Russia, the role of Jadid journalists in disseminating information, the tasks of the press in Uzbekistan during the rule of Bolsheviks, the essence of authoritarian, totalitarian views (theories) on information and their consequences have been analyzed in the article. The item entitled “Short Stories from the Life of Russian Tsars, Local and Other Types of Information” pointed out in the charter of newspaper “Turkiston Viloyatining Gazeti” (Newspaper of Turkestan Region) is considered to be the first official source on the theory of authoritarian publications in the current research, with particular emphasis …

Honors College Portfolios
This portfolio is a compilation of my written and published work during my time as a Duquesne student, whether completed in class or for an internship. My portfolio, filled with articles focusing on a wide range of genres and topics, offers a glimpse into the life of a journalist, as well as the media field in general.
While it is essential for a journalism student to study the laws, ethics, theories and concepts behind journalism, its importance and its history, we must also go out into the world and report. How can one become a successful journalist without actually reporting …

World Languages and Cultures
The purpose of this research study is to determine if there is a desire or demand for a bilingual English-Spanish news outlet at Cal Poly. Spanish is considered the most relevant language because it is the second most frequently spoken language in the community. Results are based on analysis of data collected through an electronic survey and various interviews. Demographics of the university as well as the surrounding community are also factors to consider.
Syrian Crisis Representation In The Media: The Cnn Effect, Framing, And Tone, Savannah S. Day
Syrian Crisis Representation In The Media: The Cnn Effect, Framing, And Tone, Savannah S. Day
Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal
Over the past seven years of the Syrian Civil War, Syrian refugees have been painted in a negative light by news media outlets around the world. History of media coverage regarding global humanitarian crises shows that with various tools and processes, media can shape public opinion and policy in whichever direction it desires, and oftentimes policymakers and the public are quick, as well as emotional, to react. In this paper, my objectives are to analyze specific examples of this CNN Effect phenomena within news coverage of the Syrian refugee crisis, as well as generally explain the negatively correlating relationship between …

Hollywood, Hashtags, And Cultural Disharmony: A Comparative Framing Analysis Of How American Newspapers Have Framed The Me Too Movement, Julia M. Fechter
Honors College Theses
This project explored how The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the New York Post covered the Me Too movement by studying the frames and framing techniques embedded in the newspapers’ articles. As one of the initial studies to analyze how American newspapers covered the movement, this study investigated how such content might be formative to subsequent narratives published about the Me Too movement. The articles were analyzed using a codebook adapted from Kowalewski (2006). Elements coded included but were not limited to the articles’ political affiliations, article tones, main news angles and main frames in order …
Perceived Credibility Of Radio News Broadcasters: An Analysis In Profit And Nonprofit Settings, Allison M. Gutwein
Perceived Credibility Of Radio News Broadcasters: An Analysis In Profit And Nonprofit Settings, Allison M. Gutwein
Journalism
Radio is everywhere. It follows us into our cars, our homes, and even sneaks its way into our pockets through the powers of online streaming and smart phones. Aside from music programs, news programs are, and have been for the last century, prominent fixtures on the airwaves. But why should we believe what we hear on news radio?

Working The News: Preserving Professional Identity Through Networked Journalism At Elite News Media, Jenny Hauser
Doctoral
The concept of journalism as a profession has arguably been fraught and contested throughout its existence. Ideologically, it is founded on a claim to norms and a code of ethics, but in the past, news media also held material control over mass communication through broadcast and print which were largely inaccessible to most citizens. The Internet and social media has created a news environment where professional journalists and their work exist side-by-side with non-journalists. In this space, acts of journalism also can be and are carried out by non-journalists. Through the new news distribution channels offered by social media, non-journalists …

A Corpus-Based Study On The Portuguese Translations Of English Adversative Coordinating Conjunctions And Adverbs In News Texts, Marcella Cerqueira Cascione Cerqueira Netto
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study examines how adversative coordinating conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs are translated from English into Brazilian Portuguese through a parallel corpus built specifically for this research. The corpus is composed of 59 news articles extracted from the online versions of the British magazine The Economist and the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de São Paulo. While the former contains the original source texts, the latter consists of their respective translations. This research aims to verify if the translations of the adversative coordinating conjunctions and adverbs provided by four online bilingual dictionaries are the same or different from the ones …

Capstones
In light of recent clergy abuse scandals, cover-ups and leadership shake-downs, it is a divided time in the Catholic Church: but this isn’t the whole story. My final capstone project is a critical essay of how Catholicism (and religion overall) is represented in mainstream media--particularly in secular news publications and entertainment (horror films) in the United States. By examining the coverage and how conversations differ within members of the Catholic Church--from journalists and critics to active Catholics, religious men and women--this project calls for greater accountability, fairness, faith representation in all media, and the overall claim that there are Catholic …
Fake Or Visual Trickery? Understanding The Quantitative Visual Rhetoric In The News, Rohit Mehta, Lynette Deaun Guzmán
Fake Or Visual Trickery? Understanding The Quantitative Visual Rhetoric In The News, Rohit Mehta, Lynette Deaun Guzmán
Journal of Media Literacy Education
In online and video/television spaces, news media discourses incorporate multimodal design as a discursive move capable of steering meaning toward desirable implications. Around the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, while polarized news outlets made their positionality on the candidates obvious, more neutral or central news outlets revealed their preferences through subtle multimodal design choices. One of these design choices is using a quantitative visual rhetoric: persuasive multimodal moves that draw on quantification through visual, spatial, and textual manipulation—involving the choice of data representation, visual images, and illustrations, (im)balance between numeric and alphabetic texts, and general quantitative narrative. This quantitative visual rhetoric …

Bbc News: Defining Britishness In The Early Twenty-First Century, Christine Gilroy-Reynolds
Bbc News: Defining Britishness In The Early Twenty-First Century, Christine Gilroy-Reynolds
English Theses & Dissertations
According to the BBC’s 2006 Royal Charter, the BBC situations itself rhetorically within the notions of ‘public value’ and its commitment to, among other things, "d) representing the UK, its nations, regions and communities; e) bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK [...]"(2-3). In order to achieve these goals, the BBC must define that which it represents particularly when dealing with the news. While BBC News claims to be impartial, rhetorically, impartiality is impossible when committing to the pursuit of definition and representation. In defining “Britishness,” BBC News must negotiate Britain’s global position as post-colonial, …

Graduate Research
This case study provides a real-life account of an ethical dilemma in journalism faced by a young reporter in the TV news industry. It explores the points of view of both the journalist and that journalist’s supervisor. It aims to spur critical thinking on the part of the reader, and to show that not all decisions can be grouped into ‘right and wrong.’
