Cruisin' The Coast: A Practice In Passionate Observation, Laura Jean Keriazakos
Cruisin' The Coast: A Practice In Passionate Observation, Laura Jean Keriazakos
Masters Theses
The term Passionate Observation is presented as an ability that improves creative writing. It requires a writer to absorb details, noticed or perceived, with intense imagination and reasoning. I present a three-pronged case for acceptance and development of this skill for writing mystery fiction. Examined in this paper are the literary talents of Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, along with the supposition both authors were passionate observers. Moreover, through the lens of education, I connect visual literacy, kinesthetic research, and passionate observation. Then, I show the philosophical correlation between observation in science and passionate observation in creative writing. …
Money People: An Examination Of Wealthy Characters In Fiction, Morgan (Yeatts) Eley
Money People: An Examination Of Wealthy Characters In Fiction, Morgan (Yeatts) Eley
Masters Theses
This thesis seeks to examine the similarities (or dissimilarities) of wealthy characters in fiction, specifically studying two well-known wealthy characters: Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice and Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby. The study examined the first impressions of these characters, their attitudes toward others, their physicalities and presences, and how they spent their money. These examinations yielded fairly similar results between the two characters, as discussed in depth within the thesis. The most obvious similarity was the way the authors wrote their characters in a “set apart” manner, creating a division between them and the other characters. While …

One Last Month, Or Clancy's Time-Box, Safiyya Bintali
One Last Month, Or Clancy's Time-Box, Safiyya Bintali
Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards
One Last Month is a young adult (YA) novella of roughly forty-three thousand words aimed at readers in middle school and in early high school grades. Structurally, it is an “ensemble Bildungsroman”, wherein all the main characters—rather than just one—embark on journeys of emotional growth and are given significant plot focus. Through the characters, One Last Month focuses on the importance and influence of non-romantic love, specifically through homosocial relationships between the novella’s male characters. It also touches on the process of grief beyond the Kübler-Ross structure and, though more subtly, emotional expression in young men. Through one of the …

Extending The Frontiers Of The Detective Novel In Adaora Ulasi’S The Man From Sagamu, Onyeka Odoh
Extending The Frontiers Of The Detective Novel In Adaora Ulasi’S The Man From Sagamu, Onyeka Odoh
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Part of the beauty of detective literature is the mental engagement and psychological contest it stages between the author and the readers, as well as its fascinating probe into the nature and dynamism of crime. However, of greater import are the formulaic structural elements that define the genre—a crime, the detection of the crime, an omniscient detective who intelligently investigates the crime, and a justified resolution of all. Though the structure of Adaora Ulasi’s The Man from Sagamu does not exactly fit into the above model, it is still a detective novel. Therefore, this essay aims to propose a new …

The Queen of Mystery carefully planned to ensure her stories had a solid plot her readers could easily follow and enjoy. This thesis focused on analyzing Christie’s process and looking at how the process could be applied in a mystery manuscript.

'The Game Is Afoot': An Exploration Of Mystery Novels And The Gentleman Detective, Anna Pietropaolo
Senior Honors Projects
In the mystery genre, The Gentleman Detective has become a kaleidoscopic icon depicted continuously over the past 200 years. The brilliant sleuth’s image has been used to highlight the contemporary culture of thoughts, faiths, and fears. As a longtime fan of the mystery genre, I wanted to explore this iconic figure and see some of the ways it could be used to reflect upon current values. There was no better way to do that than to write a book of my own, featuring a master of deduction but viewing them with an outside perspective, through the eyes of my main …

In this paper I describe an activity based on a 1903 Sherlock Holmes murder mystery, in which a substitution cipher is used to encrypt secret messages. The story provides a fun and interesting way to talk about frequency analysis, and can be used as a segue into mathematical constructs such as modular arithmetic and computation. The activity is accessible to ages twelve and above, and has been successfully used in mathematics outreach and popularization efforts as well as in general education and mathematics courses.

Genre And Loss: The Impossibility Of Restoration In 20th Century Detective Fiction, Kathryn Hendrickson
Genre And Loss: The Impossibility Of Restoration In 20th Century Detective Fiction, Kathryn Hendrickson
Dissertations (1934 -)
My project situates loss, rather than restoration, as the identifying trait of the detective fiction genre. I contend that instead of providing a problem-solution model that gives readers closure and reinforces simplified understandings of good and evil, detective fiction refuses to build comforting narratives that rehabilitate a corrupted world. Detective fiction, with its continual attempts to provide an unobtainable solution, ruminates on the impossibility of restoration.Genre and Loss: The Impossibility of Restoration in 20th Century Detective Fiction divides into four chapters, each addressing a perceived subdivision of the detective fiction genre in order to illuminate the unifying connections between …

The middle of the article is the author’s discovery of her birth parents, the key event for which is the Texas court’s unsealing the author’s adoption file. Crickets Chirping Hallelujah: Mystery And Everyday Life In The Short Stories Of Chekhov And O'Connor, Preston Donald Fulks
Crickets Chirping Hallelujah: Mystery And Everyday Life In The Short Stories Of Chekhov And O'Connor, Preston Donald Fulks
Senior Projects Spring 2019
How do we make life meaningful? Is there even space for “meaning” in our modern world which so distrusts the metaphysical? Though Flannery O’Connor and Anton Chekhov are not often set side by side, both are acutely concerned with the ways in which the tangible and spiritual lives of their characters intersect. Beginning from such universal experiences as love, suffering, and death, the two authors examine how individuals act in the world with respect to (or in ignorance of) the boundaries of physical reality. Beyond this threshold lies something mysterious, gotten at peripherally but never fully grasped – to come …
