Partial Eclipse, Christopher Pak
Partial Eclipse, Christopher Pak
Masters Theses
A meditation on the interior and exterior in physical space can help us to think about the relationship between the self and other. This thesis explores the boundary between the inside and outside, and between absence and presence through silkscreen printed fabrics. Using an improvisational process guided by chance, residual marks are layered to create an illusion of ephemeral architecture. These textiles offer an experience of time and space that exists between interior and exterior worlds.
Reading The Room: Memory, Dwelling, And The Everyday, Sara R. Hardin
Reading The Room: Memory, Dwelling, And The Everyday, Sara R. Hardin
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In any space, there is a residue that coats the present with a patina of memory. Creating layered imagery in dream-like paintings and prints, I use the domestic realm as a metaphor for the internal world of the mind, memories, and private thoughts, including them in compositions with symbols like the boundaries of windows, doors, and gates. These metaphorical structures also portray outward identities, which guard inner emotions. The conceptual aspects of these compositional elements weave together memories of the past and places of the present into a unified whole.

Idylls, Madison Aunger
Idylls, Madison Aunger
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
An “Idyll” is defined as a happy, peaceful, or picturesque scene. The term references poetry that describes a small intimate world, and scenes from everyday life.
This exhibition, Idylls, showcases the little world of my home here in Lincoln, Nebraska. The paintings mirror my experience of the domestic spaces in my life, and the peaceful moments I encounter. In Idylls you are encouraged to be idle. We do ourselves a disservice when we don’t take the time to slow down.
My work begins as an excitement about a specific formal quality, a shape of light, a hint of color, repetition …
Saturated Skies, Childhood Trophies, And Colorful Plants, Nicholas Norris
Saturated Skies, Childhood Trophies, And Colorful Plants, Nicholas Norris
Theses and Dissertations
My work presents interiors through the guise of memory while focusing on the sentimental objects within them. Through metaphors and signs I give form to certain events, sensations and out-of-perspective observations. Saturated skies, childhood trophies, and colorful plants find their place alongside decorated walls, floors, chairs, tables, rugs and beds.

Development And Changes In The Ergo Design Of Protestant Churches In Ukraine (1991-2021), Valentyna Kuryliak, Volodymyr Dudarets, Valeriy Bulatov
Development And Changes In The Ergo Design Of Protestant Churches In Ukraine (1991-2021), Valentyna Kuryliak, Volodymyr Dudarets, Valeriy Bulatov
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article presents the evolution of ergonomics and design of Protestant churches in Ukraine in the period from 1991-2021. Since Ukraine left the Soviet Union, the Soviet worldview of Ukrainian Protestants has gradually changed, which, in turn, influenced the formation of the subject-spatial environment and, in general, the ergo design of Protestant churches. The concept presented in the article is that ergo design is similar to a living organism, which changes under the influence of external factors, such as the emotional feeling of believers, political and economic changes, etc. This influence was especially evident during the transitional period on the …
Interior Materiality, Kutay Guler
Interior Materiality, Kutay Guler
NPP eBooks
The knowledge of materials and finishes is the bridge that links conceptual design to real-world application. It is among the core content of virtually all interior architecture/design curricula, moreover, access to up-to-date information on emerging technologies and trends is a key exigency for the contemporary designer. Accordingly, this book is authored to form a comprehensive resource for the “hows” and “whys” surrounding the functional and aesthetic contributions of a wide selection of materials and finishes used in multiple spatial design contexts. The knowledge base presented here is not only useful in shaping spatial experience, ensuring occupant well-being, and employing sustainable …
Out Of Place, Jonathon T. Laufersweiler
Out Of Place, Jonathon T. Laufersweiler
Theses and Dissertations
The process of disorientation creates a position or effect of being “out of place.” When feeling out of place, we enter a liminal space. My work is the practice of placing myself within this transitional space made up of lines, symbols, and passageways, where perception is slanted and ultimately, collapses. I am confronting and questioning my own sense of direction, locating myself within this liminal space between what was and what is — a place of not knowing.
Blurring The Boundary: Reinvigorating Joy In The Mundane Through Juxtaposition, Taylor M. Fulton
Blurring The Boundary: Reinvigorating Joy In The Mundane Through Juxtaposition, Taylor M. Fulton
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
There is an inherent tension between interior and exterior as experienced by the human body. We live an overwhelming majority of our lives indoors, yet we are consistently compelled towards the natural world. This compulsion is necessitated by biophilia, driving a desire to be around lifelike processes.
The boundary between interior and exterior mandates that we live our lives on one side or the other at a time, never simultaneously existing both indoors and outdoors. A disparity between the spaces is therefore maintained by the boundary. This perpetual separation sets up for the perfect use of juxtaposition, which is utilized …

Words Are A Pipe, Kyle Michael Utter
Words Are A Pipe, Kyle Michael Utter
Theses and Dissertations
A painter retraces the steps he took in making one of his paintings from beginning to end. Rather than explicitly ascribing a series of concerns or goals to his studio practice in general, he recounts the material choices he made over an 8 month period of making a specific painting of an interior landscape. The essay begins with a consideration of the written word and its potential shortcomings in describing the creative process. Warned of writing’s pitfalls, the reader proceeds onto a meandering path of written introspection as the painter reflects on his art-historical references, his sources of imagery, his …

Bantaba: Designing The Sacred Circle, Tashiara Scott
Theses and Dissertations
MOTIVATION In Richmond, there are 1.21 times as many African Americans as any other ethnic group. Yet 63.4% of African Americans live in poverty (Richmond, VA). African Americans face greater exposure to stress due to low socioeconomic status and poverty. In these communities, “discrimination and deprivation undermine individuals’ ability to accumulate the social and material resources to mitigate the effects of stress” (Brondolo, 2018). In this city’s African American community, where stress levels are high and consequential health concerns are prevalent, dance can be a remedy for managing stress and improving health (Hanna, 2006).

Light In Community: A Study In The Adaptive Reuse Of Sacred Space, Abigail Barras
Light In Community: A Study In The Adaptive Reuse Of Sacred Space, Abigail Barras
Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
MOTIVATION
American life is increasingly fragmented, leading to a sense of restlessness and disconnection. Much of that fragmentation can be traced to our pattern of architectural and sociological development, namely, the rise of the automobile suburbs in the 1950s and 60s and the abandonment of densely populated, human- scaled environments like that of the small town or city center (Oldenberg, 1999).
PROBLEM
Large numbers of architecturally significant buildings have fallen into disrepair over the years following the “white flight” of the 1960s and 70s, during which significant segments of investment dollars left city centers and followed to the suburbs …

Collecting And Selecting, Masy Hebert
Collecting And Selecting, Masy Hebert
LSU Master's Theses
In Collecting and Selecting, I am exploring the way others adorn their lives and how these elements add up to emblematize the keeper of the treasures. With linoleum relief prints and drawings, I compose a unique type of portraiture that reveals the parallel identity between the way we dress ourselves and our living spaces. Within my process, I capture moments with photographs, draw, carve, print, and cut out the elements that hold a presence of the owner. Utilizing a heightened sense of contrast with black and white images, the textures and details of these objects come alive. Each gallery wall …
Virtual / Reality: Designing Permeable Spaces For Social Well-Being In The Digital Age, Thomas R. Kennedy
Virtual / Reality: Designing Permeable Spaces For Social Well-Being In The Digital Age, Thomas R. Kennedy
Theses and Dissertations
The digital age has pushed people closer together than ever before. A device that fits in the palm of your hand allows instantaneous communication with billions of other human beings. People share everyday experiences, passing thoughts, personal photos, sometimes privately, often publicly. Distances between people and places feel reduced. Never has it been so easy to be so emotionally close to so many people.
But as digital experiences become routine, our collective perceptions of closeness and distance shift. As virtual communities become larger, so does our awareness of the actual distance between things. Even though humans can be genuinely close …
Interior, Concept And Clay: A Study Of Self And Space, Lily Alan
Interior, Concept And Clay: A Study Of Self And Space, Lily Alan
Scripps Senior Theses
This paper considers theories of perception, interaction, and being as a historical and philosophical foundation for themes of space and the self within art; namely, my senior installation, Interior, Concept & Clay. Beginning with a biological discussion of the eye’s perception, the paper moves on to Kant’s theories of Differentiation of Direction in Space. From there, I discuss Gaston Bachelard’s text The Poetics of Space as an investigation of personal awareness within domestic interiors. Finally, I study the vast and varied philosophical notions of selfhood and no-selfhood with the help of John Canfield’s The Looking-Glass Self: An Examination of …
Interior Landscapes
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
Impressions of Australia's interior adorn the interior of Mario's Palace Hotel in Broken Hill. Built in 1889 during the mining boom and purchased by Italian immigrant Mario Celotto in 1949, the walls of Mario's Palace Hotel were the canvas of Aboriginal artist, Gordon Wayne.
Pastoral scenes and plummeting waterfalls provide a stark albeit surreal contrast to the rocky plains and searing temperatures outside. Among the Australian landscapes appears Botticelli’s Venus – the work of Mario himself -- in what has been described as "Italian Renaissance meets Outback”.
The interior landscapes of Mario's Palace Hotel provide us with another vision of …

Interior: A Micro-Budget Horror Feature, Zachary Beckler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
INTERIOR is a feature-length film written, directed, and produced by Zachary Beckler as part of the requirements for earning a Master of Fine Arts in Entrepreneurial Digital Cinema from the University of Central Florida. The project aims to challenge existing conventions of the horror film on multiple levels - aesthetic, narrative, technical, and industrial - while also examining growing importance of workflow throughout all aspects of production. These challenges were both facilitated and necessitated by the limited resources available to the production team and the academic context of the production. This thesis is a record of the film, from concept …
Interiors Imagined And Remembered, Andrew Brown
Interiors Imagined And Remembered, Andrew Brown
LSU Master's Theses
My paintings are about the concept of home and how this notion constantly evolves with each successive experience, changing how I perceive and experience interior spaces. The imagery in my work is limited to common forms such as cardboard boxes and shelving, as these are elements that are easily related to, and that speak to everyday experiences. Color, space and form are manipulated to work within and at times subvert the implied narrative of each painting. Although memory remains an active part of my process, imagination and the exploration of paint’s physical and expressive possibilities have risen to the fore. …
For Earth's Sake: Closing The Chasm Between Theory And Practice In Sustainable Interior Design Education, Jesus Mangaoang Jimenez
For Earth's Sake: Closing The Chasm Between Theory And Practice In Sustainable Interior Design Education, Jesus Mangaoang Jimenez
Art and Design Theses
Making sustainable interior design education practical is critical to the survival of the planet. The essential of today's interior designer is to provide built enviornments that sustain the life of a building's occupants and the life in and around the built environment. Therefore, interior design departments are interweaving the principles and theories related to sustainable interior design into their pedagogical programs. However, there exists a void between the teachings of the theories and values related to sustainable design and putting them into practice. With the possibility of climante change looming over us, interior design students must reach a significant level …
Greenlife: A Sustainable Retail Space, Veronica J. Ledford
Greenlife: A Sustainable Retail Space, Veronica J. Ledford
Theses and Dissertations
GreenLife is the name of the retail interior design project that embodies this thesis. Using interior design as a medium to influence customers,I sought to create an environment that promotes a connection to nature and an awareness of creative possiblities within the context of a store. It addresses the problem of personal social responsiblity by using shopping, a dominant activity in the western world, as a tool for change. As a project, GreenLife attempts to answer three questions: How does design inform cultural experience? How can a connection with nature inform consumerism? Can a store transcend its purpose from filling …
