Translational Design: Enabling Impact In Complex, Multi-Stakeholder Research Projects Through Design, Rowan Christopher Page, Rosie Hornbuckle, Leah Heiss, André Nogueira

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Translational research converts the knowledge generated through basic research into tangible innovations, solutions, and interventions that directly impact people and the planet. As universities increasingly seek to maximise research impact, the applied, action-oriented, epistemology of design is well-positioned to support translational research. Successful translation requires strong communication and collaboration between different disciplines, industry partners, policy, and research end-users. Multi-stakeholder collaborations foster holistic approaches, leading to more effective and contextually relevant solutions. Designers are well-positioned to facilitate complex entanglements, integrating the needs and values of diverse perspectives. However, the emerging role of design as an enabler of translational research needs to …

Why Education Matters: Understanding Islamophobia In The United States, Cintya Felix May 2023

Why Education Matters: Understanding Islamophobia In The United States, Cintya Felix

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Since 9/11, there has been a significant increase in anti-Muslim racism which can be linked to misinformation, misconception, and stereotypes reinforced by a lack of an educational upbringing. In this paper, I examine the extent to which an individual's education level in the United States contributes to Islamophobia. Using an original data set of responses to the questions in the Chapman University Survey of American Fears (CSAF), I find a moderately strong relationship between the highest level of school an individual has completed or the highest degree they have received, and the degree to which they are afraid of Muslims. …

Impact Of A Comprehensive Musicianship Through Performance Program On An International School Band During Covid-19, Anna Lee Siew Hui

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The threats of the COVID-19 pandemic in January 2020 resulted in schools moving to online learning and impacted programs with cocurricular activities, especially band programs. Student retention, low enrollment, loss of interest, and lower motivation became liabilities for band programs during the pandemic. Therefore, having an engaging online band program is crucial to continue effective music learning and maintain a high standard of band instruction. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of a Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) program on an international school band during COVID-19. Forty-six participants ages 13-16 were recruited from the senior band …

Reflections On The Impact Of Creation Research, Practice-Based Research, And Practice As Research, And How To Define And Maximize That Impact, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

In this contribution, I reflect on creation research/practice-based research/practice as research. I mostly explore the notion of the impact of such practices. I underline the fact that impact can mean various things depending on the type of projects: it can be emotional; it can be a way to influence; or it can act more subtly on the subconscious mind. But impact is always about the intention to induce change. I also discuss the difficulty, most of the time, to have a quantitative approach to impact, since it is often difficult to measure. I suggest, instead, to include a reflection on …

Syllabus: Equity, Elitism, And Public Higher Education, Katina Rogers, Matt Brim

Open Educational Resources

This is a syllabus for a mixed MA/PhD level course, "Equity, Elitism, and Public Higher Education," taught in Spring 2021 at the Graduate Center by Matt Brim and Katina Rogers.

Higher education can be a powerful engine of equity and social mobility. Yet many of the structures of colleges and universities—including admissions offices, faculty hiring committees, disciplinary formations, institutional rankings, and even classroom pedagogies and practices of collegiality—rely on tacit values of meritocracy and an economy of prestige. For public universities like CUNY this tension can be especially problematic, as structurally-embedded inequities undermine the institution’s democratizing mission and values. It …

Examining The Impact Of An English In Action Training Program On Secondary-School English Teachers’ Classroom Practice In Bangladesh, Abdul Karim Mr., Abdul Rashid Mohamed Dr. Mar 2019

Examining The Impact Of An English In Action Training Program On Secondary-School English Teachers’ Classroom Practice In Bangladesh, Abdul Karim Mr., Abdul Rashid Mohamed Dr.

The Qualitative Report

English teachers in Bangladesh have undergone numerous training programs. Both government-initiated and donor-sponsored training programs have been in operation in Bangladesh. Government initiated institutions to train teachers are Primary Training Institutes (PTIs) and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs). However, researchers seemed to label training provided by PTIs and TTCs as inadequate. Bridging the gaps intrigued government of Bangladesh to devise donor-aided training programs, including English Language Teaching Improvement Project (ELTIP), English for Teaching, Teaching for English (ETTE), Secondary Education Quality and Access Enhancement Project (SEQAEP), Teaching Quality Improvement in Secondary Education Project (TQI-SEP). Studies reported their potential failure to bring changes …

Profound Impacts And Benefits Of Near-Death Experiences, Abigail D. Reitz Oct 2018

Profound Impacts And Benefits Of Near-Death Experiences, Abigail D. Reitz

Student Publications

In his 1975 book, Life After Life, Dr. Raymond A. Moody coined the term “near-death experience (NDE)” as an umbrella term to describe the personal experiences and sensations that occur during an altered state of consciousness on the threshold of death. While controversy arises over the highly subjective nature of near-death experiences and the empirical research surrounding them, NDEs are usually marked by similar sensations and certainly have one thing in common: they often have profound, positive impacts on affected individuals that change their outlooks moving forward. Birk Engmann comments on the impact of NDEs in Near-Death Experiences: Heavenly Insight …

Reading Engagement: The Impact On Student Identities And Achievement, Tara Lyn Thompson Jan 2018

Reading Engagement: The Impact On Student Identities And Achievement, Tara Lyn Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

Across one school year, in which I coached a fourth-grade teacher, she and I took an inquiry stance investigating how we could come to understand the reading identities kids held relative to Stephens’ (2013) list of characteristics of effective and efficient readers. We also sought to understand how we could help kids develop, sustain, or extend their reading identities and how those identities relate to a generative theory of reading. What impact would our actions have on the kids? What shift, if any, would there be in their ability to comprehend grade level text? There were 11 students in the …

Corporate Social Responsibility: An Analysis Of Its Impact On Large Companies And Society, Alexandra Marie Gray Dec 2017

Corporate Social Responsibility: An Analysis Of Its Impact On Large Companies And Society, Alexandra Marie Gray

Journalism

The success of a business is often determined by the economic status it has built itself to, or the magnitude of its renowned distinction across society. The topic of CSR is often overlooked as a minor aspect of helping the business grow.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be characterized into many facets. Some, when thinking of the topic, will think of giving back to its community. Others will associate it with keeping a modest supply chain or healthy working conditions (Agaard, Valente, & Rasmussen, 2007). Either way, any instance where a business acts on social activism and producing for the …

Philosophy Bakes No Bread, Babette Babich Oct 2017

Philosophy Bakes No Bread, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Philosophy Bakes No Bread

Far from baking bread, far from practical applicability, philosophy traditionally sought to explain the world, ideally so. Thus, when Marx argued that it was high time philosophy “change the world,” his was a revolutionary challenge. Today, philosophy is an analytic affair and analytic philosophers seek less to explain the world than to squirrel out arguments or, more descriptively, to resolve the minutiae of this or that name problem. Faced with diminishing student demand, analytic philosophers have taken to urging that everyone from primary school students to scientists be required to study (analytic) philosophy. Just so, applied …

Thomas Griffiths, Thomas Griffiths, Meg Miner Feb 2016

Thomas Griffiths, Thomas Griffiths, Meg Miner

All oral histories

Griffiths recalls that Myers had the "urge to collect" and built collections purposefully, even to the point of paying a higher price to fill a gap. Recalls Myers discarding books, one of which he has, but suspects it was only if Minor had duplicates. Reflects on the influence Myers had on faculty, through emphasis on and support for scholarship, and on students and facilities. Also discusses being present during meetings about the book auction, the last conversation he had with Myers and the one book he received as a gift after Myers' illness. The idea of wearing chrysanthemums at the …

The Impact Of Philanthropy, Jonathan F. Denzler Jan 2016

The Impact Of Philanthropy, Jonathan F. Denzler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forwarding a narrative framework of philanthropic impact this thesis problematizes the evaluation methods used by social engagement organizations to measure the impact or change that they are contributing to in a community. By focusing on the example of food access, and the corresponding language of the "food desert", this project locates the power to control the framing of social issues in the hands of funders as opposed to those who experience the real life effects of living in poverty or resource-poor communities. This process then lets the philanthropists set a goal and meet that goal without ever truly communicating or …

An opportunity for collaboration arose, connecting the Library's business need with the software development skills of JoindUp, a local start-up company under …

Myth And The Paris Commune, Katie Brunner Nov 2015

Myth And The Paris Commune, Katie Brunner

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

The Paris Commune of 1871 is an event in history that has had a special place in the hearts of many revolutionaries. Karl Marx called it “the first successful working class revolution”. This paper looks at the events of the Paris Commune, as recounted in a work produced 25 years after the event occurred and, by means of comparison with more recent accounts, examines how it moved from a historical “reality” to a mythic history through the lens of secondary framing and historical mythology. This approach to the Paris Commune reveals many significantly different interpretations; pointing out that the true …
