Inviting Submission: Isabella Beeton At The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, 1856-1865, Julie Megan Sorge Way
English Theses & Dissertations
Isabella Beeton, creator of the iconic domestic manual Beeton’s Book of Household Management, died suddenly in 1865, just before her twenty-ninth birthday. Her popular book survived to codify stereotypical Victorian female ideals. Yet the “Mrs Beeton” mythos camouflages a remarkable talent: far from domestic drudgery, Beeton maintained a vibrant career as a writer and editor at the Englishwoman’s Domestic Magazine (EDM), traveling widely to research the latest fashions and laboring behind the scenes to ensure the magazine’s success. Closely examining Beeton’s EDM work demonstrates how these formative, productive years shaped her later, more popular writing. Such a …

TEXTILE: Cloth and Culture joined the canon of international research journals dedicated to Fashion, Dress and Textile Studies in 2003, the founder editors being Janis Jefferies and Pennina Barnett, both at that time part of the Textiles and Visual Culture departments at Goldsmiths’ College University of London.
In their opening statement for Issue 1, Janis and Pennina acknowledged that the term ‘textile’ was open to debate and argument across disciplines, borders and cultures, and they set out – not to define, refine or opine that term – but to enable a range of global voices that would challenge, innovate, distinguish …

Sources include academic writings, personal projects completed under guidance from a mentor, movie and scene examples, and three interviews with comedians and in-demand comedy editors.

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This issue’s open call brought forth a diversity of submissions that reflect the culture of uncertainty and possibilities for the arts and inquiry, teaching and learning in the Twenty-first Century. We offer this issue as a gift during a time of pandemic, ecological crisis, and racial and gender divides, with a desire to contribute to unmaking and making meaning through the arts; “it is how we develop our agency and exercise our voice.

Philology Matters
The article deals with the problems of news editing, common errors, shortcomings and the reasons of this kind of mistakes.
Use of an incorrect word in a text demonstrates that journalists need to know the meaning of every word they use. If this occurs because a journalist is inexperienced or young, the editor has to shoulder all the responsibility. An incorrect word, a phrase or a sign has been found to be confusing for readers in many circumstances. It is recommended that using words that can cause arguments or change the meaning of the text should be avoided.
The phrases …

Wearing The Collaborator Hat, Jessica Hahn
Wearing The Collaborator Hat, Jessica Hahn
Tutor's Column
Writing tutors take on several roles when working with students, which range from coaches to counselors. However, one of the most important roles of writing tutors is the collaborator. Collaboration encourages both the tutor and the student to draw on each of their strengths, rather than only relying on the knowledge of the tutor alone. Some roles that restrict tutors as collaborators are roles such as editors and experts. Tutors avoid being editors of papers because they are only able to address surface level issues in writing rather than global issues. Being an expert is too much of a burden …

All oral histories
[Note: This interview was conducted on two different days and the resulting recording was edited to bring together some of the subject's comments that were in audible due to technical problems.]
Sommers begins with the story of their first meeting and later becoming Myers' roommate. He asserts that Myers was more interested in history than his declared major of political science. Myers undertook an obscure research project during their Senior year that Sommers judges was graduate level work and uses as an example of the lengths Myers would go to, beyond the minimal requirements of the course. Sommers also reflects …

Finding Aids
Thomas Bailey Aldrich -- poet, novelist, traveler and editor -- was born in New Hampshire in 1836. His father's death in 1849 caused him to abandon his idea to attend college and move to New York to work with his uncle at age 16. Soon he became a constant contributor to newspapers and magazines and the intimate friend of many Bohemian poets, artists and writers. He was editor of various major newspapers and magazines in New York and Boston from the 1860s to the 1890s. During this time he was also a prolific, published writer of prose and verse. He …
