Is There A Role For Conflict Photography In Conflict Resolution? It's Complicated, Joseph Clift Jun 2023

Is There A Role For Conflict Photography In Conflict Resolution? It's Complicated, Joseph Clift

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

In this essay, I argue that conflict photography has an important and useful role in conflict understanding and resolution. While conflict images’ usefulness has been debated, I argue that its importance has not. I start with a description of conflict photography and then provide a short historical account of the camera and its use in documenting conflicts. Next, I discuss conflict resolution and present examples of conflict resolution strategies. I then present evidence of how conflict photography can be a useful tool to support some of those strategies. Afterwards, I discuss the complicated nature of conflict photography’s usefulness. I conclude …

The Role Of The Economic Community Of West African States In Counterinsurgency And Conflict Resolution, Muhammed Touray Jan 2019

The Role Of The Economic Community Of West African States In Counterinsurgency And Conflict Resolution, Muhammed Touray

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

From 1991 to 2002, the Sierra Leone government and the Revolutionary United Front waged war against each other, subjecting Sierra Leone to a civil war. This war devastated the nation and resulted in many human casualties. Although many researchers have investigated the role of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in counterinsurgency and conflict resolution, few studies have been conducted on the specific role of strategic processing tools used by ECOWAS during the Sierra Leone war to sustain a durable peace resolution in the country. Using Galula's conceptualization of counterinsurgency and conflict resolution as a guide, the purpose …

Church Conflict In The Atlanta-Rome District: Developing A Systematic Approach To Conflict And Membership Attrition, James C. Clements Dec 2018

Church Conflict In The Atlanta-Rome District: Developing A Systematic Approach To Conflict And Membership Attrition, James C. Clements

Masters Theses

The decline in church membership and attendance of the 22 churches and 18 ministries of the Atlanta-Rome District (ARD) of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church has dramatically impacted the ministries and effectiveness of the Atlanta-Rome District churches in conducting what Jesus Christ commanded in the Great Commission. The congregations whose membership once boasted governmental officials and civil rights icons have all but dwindled to a faithful few that continue to support the Spiritual and fiduciary obligations of the local churches. The rise of non-denominational churches with a more contemporary style of worship as well as internal conflicts within the …

Music And Conflict Resolution: Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Teresa L. Enyart Jun 2018

Music And Conflict Resolution: Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Teresa L. Enyart

Masters Theses

Music in relation to peace and conflict, whether constructive or destructive, has had deep and profound effects that unite people based on commonality and shared interest. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is no different when it comes to these two dichotomies. There are those who use music for protest to either escalate conflict or use it as a social and political platform. Then, there are those who use music for resolving their differences, to promote peacemaking and peacebuilding, further unifying and embracing the diversity that’s between them. The ethnographic approach that I took in this research gives insight and a perspective to …

A Forgiveness And Reconciliation Strategy To Bring Ethnic Harmony In The Nairobi East Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Timothy O. Guto

Professional Dissertations DMin

Problem

Conflicts have affected the church of God in recent times. The Seventh-day Church in Kenya and especially after the 2007 and 2008 post-election violence was very negatively affected. Some members still cannot co-exist or enjoy Christian fellowship in the same congregation because of lack of forgiveness and reconciliation. Co-existence became difficult because church members fought each other and even destroyed homesteads belonging to rival tribal groups. Tarimo admits that "those churches that happen to be multiethnic with a national outlook are plagued with internal inter-ethnic conflicts" (2008, para. 4). Although conflict management has been done by the government including …

Emotional Literacy For The Ipod® Generation: How Mobile Music Could Help In The Resolution Of Conflict, Charlie Irvine

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Conflict resolution scholars are increasingly revising an earlier skepticism about the place of emotions in mediation. This view portrayed the mediator's role as focusing on the rational and verbal. A more holistic approach recognizes the sig-nificance of emotions in forming judgments and their positive contribution to the resolution of conflict. This article considers the potential of mobile music in accessing the emotional realm. Millions of consumers of music can no longer be regarded as passive recipients, as mobile music devices enable them to take control of their listening and create the soundtrack to all aspects of their lives. The article …

Dewey's Pragmatism And The Great Community, Philip Schuyler Bishop Nov 2010

Dewey's Pragmatism And The Great Community, Philip Schuyler Bishop

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In investigating Dewey’s theory of the Great community, it is important to first examine closely Dewey’s theory of scientific inquiry and show how it evades the spectator theory of knowledge common to all modern epistemologies as closed systems. Dewey maintained that through controlled experimentalism we engage, and can solve, existential issues facing us for the purpose of expanding human freedom, promoting the democratic way of life and cultivating the institutions which foster these activities. The usage of inquiry to overcome problematic situations therefore stands as one of the first conditions needed to attain the great community.

Since Dewey did not …
