The letters of Sophronia Chipman to her husband in the 76th Illinois Infantry describe her life in rural Kankakee County during the second half of the Civil War. In them she discusses her concerns for her husband's health, the care of her family, neighbors, the draft, and the near loss of the family farm.

Despite the abundant material available on the Civil War, little research has been dedicated to the court system of Virginia as it operated during the conflict. This thesis delves into this unchartered [sic] area by sorting out the cases heard by the Virginia Supreme Court from 1861 to 1865 and analyzing connections between the cases and the war. The results offer insight into the social and political circumstances of Virginia. The Confederate States of America, lacking a Supreme Court, relied on each state to sustain a high court of appeals. On December 2, 1862, just eleven days before the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Jeremiah Mickly said goodbye to his wife and two children and reported for duty with the 177th Pennsylvania Infantry to become a Civil War chaplain. The only known photograph ofMickly shows him dressed in the standard chaplain's uniform of the day: a plain black frock coat with a standing collar and black buttons with plain black pantaloons. Like many other Civil War soldiers, Mickly re-enlisted for service after his stint with the 177th ended, becoming chaplain of the 43rd Regiment, United States Colored Troops. Impressed with the …

After the Civil War, newly freed slaves hoped to gam the full benefits of American citizenship. In 1870, ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment led African Americans to believe that they had attailled the cherished right of suffrage. Nearly a century elapsed, however, before the proffered right became a reality. The VotingRightsActof1965 fulfilled the promise of the Fifteenth Amendment.
