Visual Catechesis: Utilizing Pictorial Illustrations To Facilitate Learning And Retention Of Protestant Doctrine In The United States, Robert Christian Hemme Dec 2021

Visual Catechesis: Utilizing Pictorial Illustrations To Facilitate Learning And Retention Of Protestant Doctrine In The United States, Robert Christian Hemme

Masters Theses

A lack of catechetical instruction within contemporary Protestantism in the United States has resulted in a large number of self-identifying Christians not knowing important tenets of their faith. The modern era also presents a unique dilemma in that North American culture is steeped in visual stimuli due to technology, so that even were catechistic instruction revived, many individuals might balk at a traditional, text-centric process. This thesis explores improving comprehension and retention of orthodox Protestant doctrine in the United States through integrating pictorial illustrations into the classic Christian pedagogical methodology of catechesis. Because of unceasing debates surrounding numerous, nuanced theological …

Living In The Promises And Place Of God- A Theology Of The World, Charles Arand, Erik Herrmann Oct 2021

Living In The Promises And Place Of God- A Theology Of The World, Charles Arand, Erik Herrmann

Concordia Pages

This Concordia Pages explores how locating the story of salvation within the broader, biblical story of creation impacts our witness in the world. In particular, it considers how being placed alongside our fellow creatures as recipients of God’s goodness and mercy opens up the possibility for a reciprocity of witness—the way in which our lives, contingent and intertwined, allow for both Christians and non-Christians to bear witness to the work and wonder of God. In such a context, the uniqueness of the Christian witness finds renewed purchase and possibility.

Recovering The Historical Practice Of Delayed Baptism And Pre-Baptismal Instruction For The Purpose Of Restoring The Standard Of A Regenerate Church Membership In Southern Baptist Churches, Alan Clayton Mccullough May 2020

Recovering The Historical Practice Of Delayed Baptism And Pre-Baptismal Instruction For The Purpose Of Restoring The Standard Of A Regenerate Church Membership In Southern Baptist Churches, Alan Clayton Mccullough

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The recovery of the historical practice of delayed baptism for the purpose of pre-baptismal instruction will better ensure a regenerate church membership, thereby promoting more faithful church members. This study argues that reform is needed in Baptist churches in the preparation for believer’s baptism. As Baptists are “people of the Book,” it is most appropriate to survey what the Bible teaches about the meaning of baptism. The first chapter addresses the biblical texts commonly agreed upon by Baptists regarding baptism, as well as those most commonly disagreed upon. Attention is given to the texts used by opponents of delayed baptism …

"Using Luther’S Small Catechism As A Family Devotional" A Study Of Family Prayer At Messiah Lutheran Church Hays, Kansas 2018, Rocco Mallardi

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Mallardi, Rocco J. “Using Luther’s Small Catechism as a Family Devotional.” A study of Family Prayer at Messiah Lutheran Church Hays, Kansas 2018.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2019. 153 pp.

The goal of this study was to seek an answer to the question: how can a church help parents teach the faith in the home? In search of an answer to this question I studied how Martin Luther answered the question. From this study I developed a Small Catechism based curriculum for families to use as they gather for prayer and the study of God’s Word.

The Household Prayers Of Doctor Martin Luther And Daily Devotion At Zion Lutheran Church In Wausau, Wisconsin, Steven Gjerde

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Gjerde, Steven, K. “The Household Prayers of Doctor Martin Luther and Daily Devotion at Zion Lutheran Church in Wausau, Wisconsin.” Doctor of Ministry, Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2016. 145 pp.

This major applied project explores the use of Martin Luther’s household prayers in Christian devotional practice. Published in the Small Catechism of 1529, the household prayers (morning, evening, and table prayers) have enjoyed varying usage since that time. This study researches whether or not they may serve as a devotional resource for contemporary believers. After addressing the Biblical and theological foundations of home devotion, the literary background of the …

Notes For Lectures On Catechlsm, William H. T. Dau, James Melchsner

Notes for Lectures on Catechism by Professor William Dau

A mimeographed copy of Professor Dau's Notes for Lectures on Catechism was among my father's papers – Ernest Melchsner, St. Louis seminary class of 1922. Biblical texts from the New King James -Version have been added to the references.

With the assistance of Rev. Daniel Preus and the resource desk at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN, It has been determined that the catechism referred to in these Notes was the German-English Schwan Catechism from 1912.

Some formatting has been added, i.e. dividing long sections into paragraphs to make It more readable. At times the other than English word phrases …

Conrad Dieterich (1575-1639) And The Instruction Of Luther's Small Catechism, Gerhard Bode Jun 2005

Conrad Dieterich (1575-1639) And The Instruction Of Luther's Small Catechism, Gerhard Bode

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Bode, Gerhard H. "Conrad Dieterich (1575-1639) and the Instruction of Luther's Small Catechism." Ph.D. Diss., St. Louis, MO: Concordia Seminary, 2005.350 pp.

Luther's catechisms have had a lasting impact on catechesis in the Lutheran church and are still widely used in Lutheran circles more than 475 years after Luther wrote them. Conrad Dieterich (1575-1639) wrote several catechisms based on Luther's Small Catechism that were widely used in Lutheran circles during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Two of Dieterich's works were intended for use by upper-level students in Latin schools and employed dialectical method in presenting the catechetical doctrine. The dissertation …

The Recovery Of Memorization In Confirmation: A Study Of Junior Confirmation At Concordia Lutheran Church, Geneseo, Illinois, Daniel Olson Apr 2005

The Recovery Of Memorization In Confirmation: A Study Of Junior Confirmation At Concordia Lutheran Church, Geneseo, Illinois, Daniel Olson

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The purpose of this project was to address the problem of junior confirmation students not retaining long term the material they were being assigned to learn. The project employed the use of various active teaching methods in order to include the different learning styles of the students. The project demonstrates that the use of these active learning methods did result in a reduction in rote memorization and a significant improvement in the student's ability to retain what they were being taught. The conclusion of the project is that there is a need for greater implementation of these active learning techniques.

Mariology In The Roman Catholic Magisterium Since The Second Vatican Council, David Mahsman May 1995

Mariology In The Roman Catholic Magisterium Since The Second Vatican Council, David Mahsman

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

When Pope Paul VI on November 21, 1964, closed the third session of the Second Vatican Council, which had approved the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, he did so with a prayer to the Virgin Mary.

He addressed her as "Mother of the Church. "When Pope John Paul II on October 11, 1992, concluded an apostolic constitution for the publication of a new Roman Catholic catechism, he did so with a prayer for the "powerful intercession" of the Virgin Mary. He addressed her as "Mother of the Incarnate Word and Mother of the Church. "

The parallels between these papal …

Propter Absolutionem: Holy Absolution In The Theology Of Martin Luther And Philipp Jacob Spener A Comparative Study, Gerald Krispin May 1992

Propter Absolutionem: Holy Absolution In The Theology Of Martin Luther And Philipp Jacob Spener A Comparative Study, Gerald Krispin

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The approach to Luther's theological development which will be taken here is a chronological one. This is in no small part due to the character of Luther's writings themselves, many of which are occasional in nature and therefore inherently reflect Luther's theological development. It is therefore imperative that the time of writing and the occasion of a quotation must always be taken into account. What becomes evident in following such a chronological approach is that we are then learning him all the way through and may be kept from selecting pieces which fit into a preconceived pattern. Indeed, any such …

The Relation Of The Celebration Of The Lord's Supper To The Office Of The Holy Ministry:, Kent Heimbigner May 1991

The Relation Of The Celebration Of The Lord's Supper To The Office Of The Holy Ministry:, Kent Heimbigner

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is written with the presupposition that the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the divinely inspired written Word of God. This is most consistent with an investigation of the liturgical writings of the early church, as the earliest liturgies of the church consist almost entirely of the words of Holy Scripture. Those who used these liturgies sought not to displace what they had received but rather to confess it as they had first received it.

This thesis does not undertake to prove from Scripture the doctrines of either the Holy Ministry or the Lord's Supper …

The Confirmation Manual For Instruction In The Word, Edward Koehler May 1977

The Confirmation Manual For Instruction In The Word, Edward Koehler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis contains a proposed course of instruction in the Word of God for catechumens of the Lutheran Church. It presents the Old Testament as a self-contained unit of study primarily for pupils twelve to fourteen years old. Ultimately, the course is designed to include the New Testament as the basis for a second year of study. The aim of the course is to help the student understand and apply the basic teachings of the Christian faith. The Bible is used as the source-book, and Martin Luther's Small Catechism is used as a supplement to guide the pupil toward a …

Public Doctrine In The Lutheran Church --Missouri Synod, Waldemar Wehmeier May 1973

Public Doctrine In The Lutheran Church --Missouri Synod, Waldemar Wehmeier

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod states its doctrinal position in the second article of its constitution :

The synod, and every member of the Synod, accepts without reservation:

1. The Scriptures of .the Old and New Testament as the written word of God and the only role and norm of faith and of practice;

2. All the Symbolical Books of the evangelical Lutheran Church as a true and unadulterated statement and exposition of the Word of God, to wit, the three Ecumenical creeds (the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed), the Unaltered Augsburg Confession, the Apology of the Augsburg …

The Theology Of Frederick Henry Quitman As Illustrated Primarily By His Catechism And Hymbook, Waldemar Wehmeier May 1963

The Theology Of Frederick Henry Quitman As Illustrated Primarily By His Catechism And Hymbook, Waldemar Wehmeier

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This research, therefore, was motivated by a desire to know more about the man who stood as a “Saul among the host of Israel" determining the course of the New York Ministerium for twenty-one years, given an honorary S.T.D. by Harvard University, so revered by his congregation that when he could no longer walk he was carried into the pulpit to a chair, and yet summarily dismissed by many as a rationalist and a socinian.

Vicarious Satisfaction: A Study In Ecclesiastical Terminology, Henry W. Reimann Feb 1961

Vicarious Satisfaction: A Study In Ecclesiastical Terminology, Henry W. Reimann

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is no dispute in modern theology on the importance of the work of Christ. Biblical, Reformation, and confessional studies have combined to recall theology to the importance of Christology and soteriology. Even the recent emphases on ecclesiology and eschatology, stemming from our ecumenical and apocalyptic times, have not been unproductive of more vital soteriological emphases.

The Eschatology Of The Lutheran Symbols, Walter Pieper Jun 1959

The Eschatology Of The Lutheran Symbols, Walter Pieper

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

For some years there has been a renewed interest in eschatology. A specific treatment of eschatology from the Lutheran point of view, however, is still lacking. With the exception of Schlink and Brunstaed, neither of whose treatment is completely adequate, nothing has been written on the subject of the -eschatological expectation found in the Lutheran Symbols. The goal of this paper, therefore, is to draw the eschatological references from the Symbols to discover how the writers looked at that which lay beyond this life and how this expectancy related to their presentation of the faith.

Luther And Sanctification, Philip S. Watson Apr 1959

Luther And Sanctification, Philip S. Watson

Concordia Theological Monthly

In a volume of sermons which he published in 1788, John Wesley took occasion to repeat a criticism of Luther that he had first made after reading his commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians many years before. "It has frequently been observed," he says, "that very few were clear in their judgment both with regard to justification and sanctification"; and he cites Luther as an example. "Who," he asks, "has wrote more ably than Martin Luther on justification by faith alone? And who was more ignorant of the doctrine of sanctification, or more confused in his conceptions of it?" …

Justification By Faith In Modern Theology, Henry P. Hamann Jr. Jan 1958

Justification By Faith In Modern Theology, Henry P. Hamann Jr.

Concordia Theological Monthly

In one of his justly famous Gesammelte Aufsaetze entitled Die Rechtfertigungslehre im Lichte der Geschichte des Protestantis1mus Karl Holl quotes the scholar Lagarde as declaring that justification as a doctrine was dead-this was in 1873 - and that no one lived by it any longer. The far more pressing task, moderns tell us, is to show to modern man that there is a God. Whether there is a God at all is the problem he has to face, not something about God, say, that God justifies. To this criticism of the very raison d’ȇtre of this study we should reply …

A History Of The Early Catechisms Of The Missouri Synod, Richard Maassel Jun 1957

A History Of The Early Catechisms Of The Missouri Synod, Richard Maassel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study was to determine which catechisms were used, the extent of their use, and their general characteristics. More precisely, the aim was to determine the factors which led the Missouri Synod to adopt its own catechism only eleven years after its organization. The study continued from there with an examination of the first official catechism and the way in which it was receiced.

Contrition (Concluded), Theodore Engelder, Herbert J. Bouman, Erwin Lueker Jun 1957

Contrition (Concluded), Theodore Engelder, Herbert J. Bouman, Erwin Lueker

Concordia Theological Monthly

Does repentance follow faith? Such a question seems strange to Lutherans. We teach: "Now, repentance consists properly of these two parts: One is contrition, that is, terrors smiting the conscience through the knowledge of sin; the other is faith, which is born of the Gospel" (AC XII). Faith is "the chief part of repentance" (Ap XII 58, German Text). No, repentance, the essential characteristic of which is faith, cannot follow faith. Calvin and his adherents, however, teach that repentance follows faith.

The Critical Study Of The Doctrine Of Baptism In The Catechism Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Richard George Maassel Jun 1956

The Critical Study Of The Doctrine Of Baptism In The Catechism Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Richard George Maassel

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this study included an exegetical examination of the validity of the Scripture passages cited as proofs for the answers, a systematic examination of the questions and answers as to their doctrinal accuracy, and, to a lesser degree, a pedagogical study of the presentation as to its effectiveness.

Cranmer's Legacy, Carl S. Meyer Apr 1956

Cranmer's Legacy, Carl S. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

At Oxford in the nineteenth century at the height of the Tractarian Movement, the Evangelicals believed that the Tractarians had shown themselves opposed to the principles of the Reformation. Partially to counteract this movement a proposal was made to erect a memorial to the Reformation martyrs. Cranmer, Latimer, and Ridley- the three men who had been burnt opposite Balliol College -were to be honored especially. Latimer and Ridley had died together there on October 16, 1555. Five months later, on the 21st of March, 1556, "in the same place where Ridley and Latimer had suffered," Thomas Cranmer was burnt. The …

The Confirmation Instruction Of Children, Harold Dorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

Purpose. We are all interested in improving our confirmation instruction. It was thought that one of the most practical ideas to find out how we might improve our individual techniques would be to make a survey of what our brethren were doing in the field. Such a study would indicate what materials and procedures were in use, our principal difficulties, and such matters that needed special study. The study might also point up new ideas and trends.

Human Will In Bondage And Freedom, A Study In Luther's Distinction Of Law And Gospel. (Part Ii.), F. E. Mayer Nov 1951

Human Will In Bondage And Freedom, A Study In Luther's Distinction Of Law And Gospel. (Part Ii.), F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free" ( Gal. 5 :1 ). That is the sum and substance of St. Paul's letter to the Galatians. Christian liberty is Paul's one and only theme: the glorious liberty which has freed us from the tyrannical bondage under the Law, sin, death, the devil, and the wrath of God. This was also the heart and core of Luther's theology set forth in his Commentary on Galatians and especially in his treatise The Liberty of a Christian Man. The occasion for writing this tract is highly significant. The papal …
