The Brooklyn College Country Fair was instituted in 1938 as a way to raise money for the Student Loan and Scholarship Fund as well as a way to promote relations between the various student-social organizations on campus. The elements of the Country Fair drew upon the history of the Brooklyn College campus, which had originally been a rural field area that hosted various sporting events as well as the Barnum and Bailey Circus once-a-year. Such a theme was implored into all aspects of the fair, especially the barn dances and the plaid attire of the students who participated. The Country …

Dwight-White House was part of the House Plan Association (HPA) at Brooklyn College. The HPA was founded in 1937 and developed into the largest co-ed social organization at Brooklyn College. At its height, 170 individual Houses were part of HPA which had its own newspaper entitled The Calling Card. By 1961, with over 2,500 members, HPA comprised the largest student organization on any campus in the country. Dwight –White House was formed in February 1957 when Dwight House and White House merged. Ira Wollen is a Brooklyn College alumnus, Class of 1946. At Brooklyn College, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Design. Ira Wollen has been a sculptor, teacher, media supervisor, and educator. While at Brooklyn College, he was involved in numerous clubs and organizations, such as being a member of student council, a director of the Office of War Activities, member of Alpha Phi Omega, and Founder of the Booster Squad. He also participated in the Brooklyn College Band and Orchestra. Throughout his years at Brooklyn College, he produced many cartoons and artwork for the campus newspapers.

The collection consists of documents regarding construction of the Whitman Hall, newspaper articles, and programs from the dedication ceremony. In addition the contents of the time capsule itself are included. The documents all originate in the period between 1950 to 1955 with the exception of the Brooklyn College faculty handbook that was published in 1948 but still in use in 1952. The collection is divided into two sub-groups. This small collection contains primarily the poetry written by Ruth Bermant Scult. The two volumes here are titled Count Me Still Among You, the Complete Poetry of Ruth Bermant Scult. In addition, there are papers (dated from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s) that Ms. Scult wrote professionally for conferences that cover various topics, such as techniques for supervisors, patience and basic skills, dealing with learning disabilities, fear, gestalt, kinesis, and more.

The Papers of Procope S. Costas consists primarily of Dr. Costas’s writings, mainly the dictionary that he had prepared (although never fully finished) entitled English Words Derived from the Greek. In addition to the six boxes that contain bound and unbound drafts of the dictionary Dr. Costas was working on, this collection is comprised of correspondence, personal information, miscellaneous items such as invoices and brochures, several citations, photographs of family and friends, as well as oversized materials including two LP’s (with manuals that Dr. Costas wrote).

This collection consists of items that pertain to the Brooklyn College Dramatics Clubs for both the day and evening divisions of the college. There are posters, flyers, scripts, faculty correspondences, newspaper clippings, but, primarily, a wide assortment of programs. The items span almost a half century of dramatic clubs at Brooklyn College, which began when the college was founded, and documents the steady evolution of the theater program from the 1930s through the 1960s.
