Apology And Reconciliation In Settler States, Nicholas B. Murphy
Apology And Reconciliation In Settler States, Nicholas B. Murphy
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This dissertation offers a normative account of how we should conceive of reconciliation between Indigenous people(s), states qua states, and their non-Indigenous citizens. It mines pre-theoretic understandings of reconciliation to determine appropriate governing norms for reconciled relationships, the normative expectations that attend these, and what processes or initiatives might be necessary to achieve them. In liberal democratic settler states like Canada, Australia, the United States and New Zealand the desirability of reconciliation is acknowledged by all parties. However, considerable ambiguity surrounds the concept ‘reconciliation.’ This is problematic because concepts influence social discourse, and the rhetoric of reconciliation not only guides …

Christianity And Bankruptcy, David A. Skeel Jr.

Although the term “bankruptcy” is nowhere to be found in the Bible, debt and the consequences of default are a major theme both in the Hebrew Bible and in the New Testament. In Israel, as in the ancient Near East generally, a debtor who defaulted on his obligations was often sold into slavery or servitude. Biblical law moderated the harshness of this system by prohibiting Israelites from charging interest on loans to one another, thus diminishing the risk of default, and by requiring the release of slaves after seven years of service. Jesus alluded to the lending laws at least …
The Crucible Of History:How Apology And Reconciliation Created Modern Conceptions Of The Salem Witch Trials, Heaven Umbrell
The Crucible Of History:How Apology And Reconciliation Created Modern Conceptions Of The Salem Witch Trials, Heaven Umbrell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For centuries, historians, authors, and amateur enthusiasts alike have been mesmerized by the Salem witch trials. Most of the literature focuses on the trials themselves and takes one of three approaches: anthropological; sociological; or conspiratorial. Recently Gretchen Adams, professor of history at Texas Tech University, approached the trials differently, focusing on memory. She narrowed on how the “specters of Salem” loomed over American cultural and public memory. Apart from Adams, little scholarly inquiry has focused on the aftermath of the trials, especially how it affected the people directly involved. This thesis will expand the historiography of the Salem witch hunt …
Forgiveness, Finitude, Apology And Acknowledgment, Mano Daniel, Jim Gough
Forgiveness, Finitude, Apology And Acknowledgment, Mano Daniel, Jim Gough
The Canadian Society for Study of Practical Ethics / Société Canadienne Pour L'étude De L'éthique Appliquée — SCEEA
We argue for a particular conception of forgiveness with the following characteristics: forgiveness as transactional (primarily bi-lateral, rather than unilateral), elective (not obligatory) and conditional. Initiating the process requires forgiveness to be extended to the wrongdoer but not at the expense of forgetting, excusing, or condoning the wrong. The offer of the apology shifts the control or power from the wrongdoer to the victim who may initiate the conditional decision which may culminate in the repairing of the damaged relationship. A wrong may not be simply a perpetration of harm, but also a moral insult. It is the insult, this …
Socratizing Paul: The Portrait Of Paul In Acts, Rubén R. Dupertuis
Socratizing Paul: The Portrait Of Paul In Acts, Rubén R. Dupertuis
Religion Faculty Research
The Acts of the Apostles is poorly named because it is primarily the acts of only two apostles: Peter and Paul (and Paul is not actually considered to be an "apostle" by Luke, the author of Acts). Furthermore, it is Paul who emerges as the hero of the narrative, as well over half of Acts is devoted to his journeys and exploits. The portrait of Paul in Acts is striking for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that letter writing, the activity for which Paul appears to have been known, is completely absent. In Acts Paul …

The Ethics Of Reparations For Slavery, Kyla A. Jermin
The Ethics Of Reparations For Slavery, Kyla A. Jermin
Philosophy Summer Fellows
Reparations has always been a lingering topic in American history – one that is heavily discussed, but never quite put into action. Though there are many who agree that payment is owed for slavery, or that a crime was committed, they are often dissuaded by various issues, or by the idea that reparations are “too divisive” and would encourage racial dissension. In my project, I address these arguments, and establish a case for reparations and the ethical responsibility behind it. My project explores themes of duty, responsibility, and compensation for wrongdoing as applied to the American slave trade. In this …
The Stance Of Personal Public Apology, Martha S. Cheng
The Stance Of Personal Public Apology, Martha S. Cheng
OSSA Conference Archive
Personal apology can be understood as self-defense—a response to an actual, implied, or anticipated accusation against one’s character. Within argumentation studies, scholars have investigated how public apologies are constructed to repair a speaker’s image and/or repair the speaker’s relationship with others through specific strategies. This paper broadens the study of apology by employing the sociolinguistic concept of stance, understood as the ways in which a speaker orients herself in relation to sociocultural values, other persons, actions, events, and, especially in the case of apology, another version of herself. In addition to explicit claims, stance can also be interpreted through …

Commentary On “The Stance Of Personal Public Apology”: Transgression & Apologia: Disjoining Standpoints Of Justice, Publicity And Drama, G Thomas Goodnight
OSSA Conference Archive
This paper responds to Professor Martha Cheng’s standpoint analysis of transgression and apologia in three twenty first century media-promoted controversies: Tiger Woods, Paula Deen, and Bryan Williams. Argument strategies are differentiated by genres that aim at justice, publicity, and drama. Forensics, public relations, and entertainment mix across media apparatus. I emphasize the disjunctures among these acts of argument and thereby provide an alternative to analysis and synthesis of the argumentation as discourse.
The Effect Of Explicit And Implicit Instruction And Native Language Exposure For Advanced L2 Learners In Chinese Pragmatics: Apologies, Yu-Fang Liao
Theses and Dissertations
Pragmatics is part of communicative competence. In order to communicate successfully, pragmatic competence is of vital importance. Although pragmatics has played a significant role in L2 learners' communicative competence, pragmatics still has not been commonly taught in the classroom. The present research investigates the efficacy of instruction in pragmatics in the advanced Chinese language class has on the production and appropriate use of apology strategies, and examines the correlation between exposure in a Chinese Speaking Community (CSC) and pragmatics development. The subjects include 55 students in their third-year of college-level Chinese, divided into four classes at Brigham Young University. The …

Table Annexed To Article: Madison's Apology For The Fall Of Washington In Mr Text, Peter Aschenbrenner
Peter J. Aschenbrenner
As for his explanation for his failed leadership in support of regular and militia forces at Bladensburg, Madison held his fire during his lifetime; posthumous publication of important and highly nuanced writings – amounting to his apology to the nation for his failures – were finally acquired by Congress and published in 1865 (the Lippincott edition). Of four groupings of documents his Memorandum, dated August 24, 1814 and his Memorandum, referencing August 29, 1814, both written long afterwards are presented in MR text format by Our Constitutional Logic.

Peter J. Aschenbrenner
John Armstrong’s service as America’s wartime Secretary of Defense (January 13, 1813 – August 29, 1814) offers a confused episode in civilian leadership of any nation’s armed forces. His Notices of the War of 1812 – with a print history dating to 1836, with online editions dating to 1840 – is his attempt to exonerate himself. Our Constitutional Logic presents Chapter 5 of Volume II which addresses his role in the failed defense of the City of Washington. The alert reader may care to combine this reading with Armstrong’s Hints to Young Generals (1812), which Our Constitutional Logic has published …
An Informal Look At The Non-Apology, Mano Daniel, Jeff Noonan
An Informal Look At The Non-Apology, Mano Daniel, Jeff Noonan
OSSA Conference Archive
While the mechanisms of apology, forgiveness and reconciliation receive considerable scru-tiny, little attention has been afforded the non-apology. This counterfeit, confected typically by false substi-tution or mis-direction, adds moral insult to moral wrong. The paper elucidates the normative structural relationship among apologiser, the apologetic disposition, and the apology and defends the view of the non-apology as the pretended willingness to recalibrate the moral positional relationship among apologiser, wronged, and wrong without actually doing so.
Evaluations Of Im/Politeness Of An Intercultural Apology, Wei-Lin Melody Chang, Michael Haugh
Evaluations Of Im/Politeness Of An Intercultural Apology, Wei-Lin Melody Chang, Michael Haugh
Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)
This study examines variation in evaluations of im/politeness of a recording of a naturally occurring intercultural apology, focusing in particular on potential cultural differences in these evaluations across speakers of (Australian) English and (Mandarin) Chinese. We first closely analyse the apology itself as a form of social action, and suggest in the course of this analysis that evaluations of im/politeness are closely tied to converging and diverging interpretations of actions and meanings that are interactionally achieved in situated discourse. The results of a survey of evaluations of the apology and follow-up interviews with Australian and Taiwanese informants are then discussed. …
Against Hedonist Interpretations Of Plato's Protagoras, J. Clerk Shaw
Against Hedonist Interpretations Of Plato's Protagoras, J. Clerk Shaw
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
In this paper, I adapt one of the pro-hedonist strategies to anti-hedonist ends. Just as some prohedonists insist that Plato’s arguments against hedonism elsewhere do not touch the actual theory found in the Protagoras (again, PH), I argue that the most natural reading of PH is inconsistent with views found in purportedly earlier dialogues (especially the Apology and Crito) as well as in purportedly later dialogues (such as the Gorgias, Phaedo, and Republic). In section 1, I argue that PH focuses entirely on bodily goods and bads.11 Then, in section 2, I argue that this makes the relationship between virtue …

Social Beliefs For The Realization Of The Speech Acts Of Apology And Complaint As Defined In Ciluba, French, And English, Kashama Mulamba
Faculty Scholarship – English
Most cross-linguistic studies of speech acts have dealt mainly with two languages, a native language and a second or foreign language. The present study investigates a multilingual situation where the native speakers of Ciluba, French, and English are compared to the trilingual speakers of the three languages in terms of the realization of the speech acts of apologizing and complaining. It considers the social beliefs of the subjects of the four language groups for the realization of the two speech acts. The study is part of a larger study that was designed to discover the norms of the three languages …
Australian And Chinese Perceptions Of (Im)Politeness In An Intercultural Apology, Wei-Lin Melody Chang
Australian And Chinese Perceptions Of (Im)Politeness In An Intercultural Apology, Wei-Lin Melody Chang
Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)
This study aims to explore the variables in perceptions of (im)politeness in an intercultural apology, focusing on discussion of the cultural and gender differences. Through the study’s instrument, a conversation between an Australian and a Taiwanese Chinese speaker, the study suggests that there are indeed some differences in perceptions of (im)politeness across different cultural groups, since the participants from these two backgrounds tend to use distinctive strategies to make apologies. The study’s findings indicate that the cultural factor is more influential in the perceptions of (im)politeness than the gender factor. The gender differences found in these perceptions require further investigation …

Yavneh’S Liturgy And Early Christianity, Asher Finkel Ph.D.
Rabbi Asher Finkel, Ph.D.
A critical historical examination of the liturgy of Yavneh and the use of the terms "minim" and "Nazarenes" in the prayer with an appendix that provides a review, both textually and historically, of the early rabbinic material (the Yavneh tradition) on the Christian teaching with a special reference to Rabbi Jesus and a particular focus on the episode involving Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus of Yavneh and Lydda at the beginning of the second century CE.
The Socratic Problem: Some Second Thoughts, Eric A. Havelock
The Socratic Problem: Some Second Thoughts, Eric A. Havelock
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
In this paper, Havelock argues that the distinction between "early" "middle" and "late" dialogues makes little sense. All of the dialogues are Plato's construction; there is no reason to accept any of them as intended to be accurate representations of the historical Socrates. The Apology, often taken as a faithful representation of the historical Socrates, is rather a genre piece, in the tradition of Gorgias' Palamedes. Compare Isocrates' Antidosis. Havelock takes the movement from the orality of Socrates to the literacy of Plato as critical movement in the Athenian thought.

Do The Lutheran Symbolical Books Speak Where The Sacred Scriptures Are Silent?, Arthur Carl Piepkorn
Do The Lutheran Symbolical Books Speak Where The Sacred Scriptures Are Silent?, Arthur Carl Piepkorn
Concordia Theological Monthly
An introduction to some of the problems raised by the fact that the Lutheran Symbolical Books on occasion use nonbiblical concepts, draw their metaphors from nonbiblical sources, go beyond the Biblical materials, extract doctrine from textually dubious Bible passages, use an allegorizing hermeneutical method, and give a specifically "Lutheran" interpretation to certain Biblical terms and texts.
A Comparative Study Of The Doctrine Of Scripture In Article 4 Of The Apology Of The Augsburg Confession With The Doctrine Of Scripture In The Works Of Kister Stendahl, Jerry Kosberg
Master of Divinity Thesis
This paper is to be a comparative study of the doctrine of Scripture found in Article Four of the Apology of the Augsburg Confession with the doctrine of Scripture found in various representative writings of Dr. Krister Stendahl. The paper will be an attempt to establish the relationship between the view of Scripture found in an article of the Lutheran Confessions and the view of Scripture found in a Lutheran biblical scholar who works from the perspective of what may be called the historical -critical method. In other words, the question this paper is asking is: Is the historical - …

Scripture, Confession, Justification, Carl S. Meyer
Concordia Theological Monthly
From the very outset of the immigration movement which became part of the Missouri Synod, there was a strong confessional stance. The "Brief Outline of the Emigration Code," in its first paragraph, contained a confession of faith. Those who signed the code said that they had accepted "the tenets of the Lutheran faith, as contained in God's Word of the Old and New Testaments, and set forth and confessed in the Symbolical Writings of the Lutheran Church."
The Body Of Christ, Richard R. Caemmerer
The Body Of Christ, Richard R. Caemmerer
Concordia Theological Monthly
The Apology of the Augsburg Confession warns against two distortions in the meaning of the church. The one is that the church be viewed as an outward organization in which believers and hypocrites are mingled. In the days of the Reformation this distortion implied that the church was a political organization to which men adhered through the carrying out of rites and obligations. In our own time it may take the form of stress on extending and financing the church's business to the point of devaluating its other concerns. The other distortion is that the church is regarded as a …

Melanchthon The Confessor, Arthur Carl Piepkorn
Concordia Theological Monthly
By definition, a confessor is "one who confesses." Specifically and strictly, a confessor is an ordained clergymen who hears confessions and is authorized to grant absolution. Or he is one who professes or gives heroic evidence of his faith in Christ, a saint who suffers persecution for his faith without undergoing martyrdom in the process.

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose of this study is to 1ook again at one facet of the nature of the Church as defined by these Confessions. Such a study, with the insights it affords, is a prerequisite to an intelligent participation in the current discussions of the nature of the Church and the paths to her reunification.
