Paul Ricoeur And Biblical Hermeneutics: Narrative, Genre, And Self, Collin Angell
Paul Ricoeur And Biblical Hermeneutics: Narrative, Genre, And Self, Collin Angell
Senior Theses
In short, this thesis seeks to develop a biblical hermeneutic centered on one central axis, based on the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur. That central axis is narrative. The Bible is written in various genres, ranging from prophecy to wisdom to hymn. The goal of this thesis is first to show how a biblical hermeneutic that treats narrative as the central mode of discourse informs a better understanding of the other biblical genres of discourse, and thus of the Bible as a whole. Furthermore, this thesis takes an existentialist direction by taking the narrative-centered biblical hermeneutic and deriving from it a …
For|Rest, Jes Klass
For|Rest, Jes Klass
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
In for/rest, players navigate a world built around an interpretation of the liminal space of grief. Glitching, blinking roots are all around an otherwise grey, empty space and as players destroy these roots they gradually resaturate the landscape. Each time a root is destroyed, the player will watch it disintegrate in front of them while some form of animal or plant spawns in the root’s stead. On rare occasions, instead of a plant or animal, a human will phase into the world as a root disintegrates. This human, Charlie, roams around the forest and offers the player a chance to …

Communication practitioners in the agriculture industry have the challenge of identifying the best way to educate consumers, and they have experienced challenges in consumer engagement. Additionally, food safety issues have continued to rise with a trend of recalls and foodborne illnesses. While the rhetoric in the agriculture industry is pointing to the need for agricultural issues to be addressed from an agriculturist sharing their stories and perspectives, there is limited research on the impact of personal narratives on attitude change and message elaboration. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of narrative and analytical practices on elaboration, …

“In The Midst Of Experience:” Civic Education Through Narrative Creation, Jeff Spanke
“In The Midst Of Experience:” Civic Education Through Narrative Creation, Jeff Spanke
Language Arts Journal of Michigan
Through employing a narrative, reflective approach, I discuss how the experience of working with international students during a summer institute informed the developed and implementation of a civically minded project in a college Young Adult Literature seminar. The project sought to frame "America" as an actual teenager, relative to other, more "adult" countries in the world, and asked students to construct a conventional YA narrative featuring America as the primary character. Through this narrative, I explain the various successes of the project and ultimately argue that students' stories and original compositions offer a viable mechanism for progressive, democratic citizenship education …
Between. Beneath. Beyond... A Visual Drama In Five Acts, Deborah Burk
Between. Beneath. Beyond... A Visual Drama In Five Acts, Deborah Burk
Art Theses
The concept that I explore in my thesis is the idea of marking moments in time by mental “snapshots” of events that are indelibly ingrained on the mind and can be theatrically portrayed through ceramics. That these moments birth opportunities to create a narrative between the artist and material, the art and the viewer, and between the works of art themselves was the impetus for the work, while also exploring what lies beneath the making and what might live beyond the exhibition. COVID-19 created, by necessity, a “slowing down” of time – and magnification of moments that one might otherwise …

Making Sense Of The Divinely Beautiful: Essays On Friendship, Love, And Attraction, Michelle Catlin
Making Sense Of The Divinely Beautiful: Essays On Friendship, Love, And Attraction, Michelle Catlin
Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy
Essay 1: As interpersonal communication has changed with the proliferation of technology-based forms of meeting and interacting with others, philosophers have begun considering ways in which these new types of communication have altered the landscape of our relationships. Although philosophers are split on whether online friendships can measure up to the Aristotelean standard of virtue friendship, none have questioned the importance of truth telling or accurate representation of oneself in the context of online sharing. The underlying assumption is that in a virtuous friendship, there is no role whatsoever for anything other than strict honestly. I disagree with this …

“Pero, Díganme”: Don Felipe Guamán Poma De Ayala Y Su Relato De La Historia Del Perú, Kady Drorbaugh
Senior Projects Spring 2021
Principally, this project analyzes the indigenous Andean prince Don Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala’s El primer nueva corónica y buen gobierno de las Yndias, a historical account of pre-conquest Inca civilization, the consequent Spanish invasion, and colonial Peru up until 1613. His report of the injustice and mistreatment of the Andean people under Spanish colonial rule is established to then propose radical transformations to the colonial state and the place of indigenous people in it. I contextualize his work with a brief background of important features of both Incan and colonial Spanish society that he discusses, as well as specifically …
Narrative Value And Well-Being, Franchesca Fu
Narrative Value And Well-Being, Franchesca Fu
Scripps Senior Theses
Some philosophers think that one’s well-being increases when one obtains more objective goods, and one of those objective goods under debate is one’s narrative. In this thesis, I examine how one’s narrative can increase one’s well-being by itself by drawing from David Velleman’s argument for narrative value. After finding Velleman’s argument compelling, I clarify what a narrative is, including how it has an objective and subjective component. I then explore what criteria are necessary for one’s narrative to make a positive contribution to one’s well-being by presenting Connie Rosati’s argument that one’s narrative needs to be chosen or internalized, affirming, …
