Design By Accident, Mengfu Zhang Aug 2009

Design By Accident, Mengfu Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Accident is a metaphor for life. From an arbitrary point in time, we potentially preview the entirety of existence. There is a Chinese idiom called “ blessing or bane,” which implies that a misfortune may perhaps soon turn into a blessing. Focusing on accident as a design method implies making the best out of a bad situation. An accident reveals invisible circumstances and potentialities in the world, both familiar and unfamiliar. Looking into the unpredictable world, I can begin to release my control, take a breath, and see what might happen if I do not fight the situation. I am …

Why Economic Performance Has Differed Between Brazil And China? A Comparative Analysis Of Brazilian And Chinese Macroeconomic Policy, Fernando Ferrari-Filho, Anthony Petros Spanakos

Department of Political Science and Law Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper addresses a specific question: why has China grown so rapidly and Brazil not? To answer this question, it (i) establishes the basis for comparison between China and Brazil by contextualizing these countries within the BRICs concept, and (ii) presents a comparative analysis of Brazilian and Chinese reforms focusing only on the issue of macroeconomic policy, especially the monetary and exchange rate regimes, and its effect on growth.

The Life And Ministry Of John Sung: Sowing Seeds Of Vibrant Christianity In Asian Soil, Ka-Tong Lim Jun 2009

The Life And Ministry Of John Sung: Sowing Seeds Of Vibrant Christianity In Asian Soil, Ka-Tong Lim

ATS Dissertations

John Sung, Ph.D. (1901-1944), was a Chinese scientist turned preacher whose public ministry lasted a mere twelve years. Yet his short life impacted tens of thousands, if not more. At a time when science was king and religion was relegated to the realm of myths, a scientist who preached an old-time religion, performed faith healings, and talked about the second coming of Jesus, must be quite "crazy," or hard to understand.

This dissertation is a biographical research seeking to discern contributing factors that made John Sung a central figure of twentieth-century Christianity. It explains the importance of Sung and his …

Prospects For Western-Style Democratization In China: Failure To Move Toward Power Sharing, Nina Ericson May 2009

Prospects For Western-Style Democratization In China: Failure To Move Toward Power Sharing, Nina Ericson

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Although China is rapidly developing economically, militarily, and socially, it remains an authoritarian country. Since the diplomatic breakthrough by Richard Nixon with China in 1972, successive administrations in Washington have held out the hope to American citizens that China inevitably would democratize. Because of China's economic and growing military power in the international arena, the United States government and other free nations believe that it is important to urge the Chinese government to be responsible in terms of its protection of human rights and support of other democratic tenets, domestically and internationally, as well as to be a role model …

City Level Development New Key To Successful Development, Gina Herron Apr 2009

City Level Development New Key To Successful Development, Gina Herron

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Development is one of the most debated issues in political science today. There has never been a clear consensus reached on what is one successful path to developmental success for nations to follow. Organizations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and already developed nations have long touted a policy based on rapid privatization, which has been often referred to as shock therapy.

During this current period of globalization it has never been more important for underdeveloped nations to successfully move towards development, in order for those nations to not be left behind in an ever increasing …

Resistance And Accommodation: The Catholic Church In Post-Mao China, Anthony E. Clark Mar 2009

Resistance And Accommodation: The Catholic Church In Post-Mao China, Anthony E. Clark

History Faculty Scholarship

The Catholic Bishop of Shanghai, Gong Pinmei, who was imprisoned from 1955-1985 for being a "counter-revolutionary," once said: "If we renounce our faith, we will disappear and there will not be a resurrection. If we are faithful, we will disappear, but there will be a resurrection." For China's Catholic Community, the knotty problem of how to faithfully retain and practice religious belief has resulted in a highly complex system of resistance and accommodation. Two communities have emerged in China's Catholic landscape, the "underground" church that navigates precariously outside of party sanction, and the "aboveground" church that operates under the watchful …

Chinese Women And Economic Human Rights, Lisa Fry Jan 2009

Chinese Women And Economic Human Rights, Lisa Fry

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Women’s human rights in China have an intriguing history and a challenging present. In ancient China, Confucianism espoused the virtues of silent women who stayed at home. During the Maoist period, on the other hand, gender equality was prioritized by the state, and women were equally appointed to leadership positions and agricultural collectives with men. After Mao’s death, the country transitioned to a social market economic system that resulted in a loss of state support for gender equity. Today, the rights of women in China are not clearly defined, protected, or promoted. China’s patriarchal traditions have reasserted themselves, obstructing women’s …

Review Of Stalnaker: Overcoming Our Evil, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2008

Review Of Stalnaker: Overcoming Our Evil, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Aaron Stalnaker’s Overcoming Our Evil makes compelling reading for several different audiences. To begin with, it offers a good deal to scholars of Xunzi and of Augustine, thanks both to the many careful evaluations of others’ interpretations and, more importantly, to the new light that Stalnaker is able to shed on each thinker, because of the ways that comparative study reveals previously “overlooked details or themes” [1]. In particular, Stalnaker employs a device he calls the “bridge concept” in order to focus his comparison and reveal previously obscured significance in his authors. He defines bridge concepts as “general ideas, such …

Review Of John Makeham: Lost Soul- “Confucianism” In Contemporary Chinese Academic Discourse, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

There is little doubt that the wounds inflicted upon the body of traditional Confucianism by the end of China’s civil service exams in 1905, the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911, and the New Culture Movement that began in 1915 collectively proved fatal. With its body dead or dying, Confucians since the early twentieth century have been struggling to find a new body of practice that can host what the eminent historian Yu Ying-shih has referred to as Confucianism’s wandering soul. John Makeham’s Lost Soul: “Confucianism” in Contemporary Chinese Academic Discourse is an impressive investigation of these efforts over …

Stephen C. Angle Dec 2008

Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

My task here is to reflect on the book’s objectives and to ask whether they are well-conceived and successfully accomplished. Van Norden’s book has enhanced my understanding and stimulated my thinking on many fronts; I hope, therefore, to take advantage of this forum to open up opportunities for further philosophical work that builds on the foundation Van Norden has …
