Evangelization And Conversion Reconsidered In The Light Of The Contemporary Controversy In India: A Hindu Assessment, Anantanand Rambachan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The contemporary controversy in India, centered on the issue of evangelization and conversion, has elicited a variety of responses from both Hindus and Christians. Swami Dayananda Saraswati, a well known Vedanta teacher and founder of Arsha Vidya Pitham, equates conversion with violence because of the pain it causes to the family and community of the convert. He likens the religions of the world to ancient historical monuments and argues that these religions, like the pyramids of Egypt, must be preserved and protected. He expresses his approval for what he describes as "nonaggressive" religions that do not seek to win converts. …

Religious Conversions: An Indian Christian Point Of View, Michael Amaladoss Jan 2002

Religious Conversions: An Indian Christian Point Of View, Michael Amaladoss

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The phenomenon of conversions as changing one's religious affiliation has become an issue for lively discussion and even controversy in India today. Some do not see the need for them. others are ready to tolerate them, but decry the use of allurement or force. Force need not be physical: it could be psychological, social or even spiritual. Democracy is a game of numbers. Therefore the increase in the numbers of one religious group becomes a political problem, when religion has become a factor in politics. Some would like to keep religion a private affair that should not get mixed up …

The Controversy And Its Theological Implications, Judson B. Trapnell Jan 2002

The Controversy And Its Theological Implications, Judson B. Trapnell

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The controversy concerning evangelization and conversions in contemporary India may be productively interpreted as a conflict between stories, between what John Haught refers to as "power-bestowing narratives," or between what Gerald Larson calls "comprehensive interpretive frameworks." These Hindu stories and Christian stories are "discordant," not only with each other, but with other stories within their own traditions, thus fostering the mutual mistrust that thoroughly colors the debate. My task is to sketch four such narrative frameworks, each centered upon an image of India and corresponding to one of four communities involved in the controversy: conservative Hindu nationalists, more secularist Hindus, …

Rethinking Mechanistic Explanation, Stuart Glennan Jan 2002

Rethinking Mechanistic Explanation, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Philosophers of science typically associate the causal-mechanical view of scientific explanation with the work of Railton and Salmon. In this paper I shall argue that the defects of this view arise from an inadequate analysis of the concept of mechanism. I contrast Salmon's account of mechanisms in terms of the causal nexus with my own account of mechanisms, in which mechanisms are viewed as complex systems. After describing these two concepts of mechanism, I show how the complex-systems approach avoids certain objections to Salmon's account of causal-mechanical explanation. I conclude by discussing how mechanistic explanations can provide understanding by unification.
