Workers, Unions, And Historians On The Northern Plains, William C. Pratt
Workers, Unions, And Historians On The Northern Plains, William C. Pratt
History Faculty Publications
Labor history has come of age over the past three decades. Today two national journals, Labor History and Labor's Heritage, focus on this subject in the United States, and many others, including the Journal of American History, publish articles in the field. In fact, much of what is called new social history often treats labor history topics, and many western historians have had an extended interest in labor history. Numerous recent examples, including the work of Carlos Schwantes, Michael Kazin, Vicki Ruiz, and others have been well received.

Brick Versus Earth: The Construction And Destruction Of Confederate Seacoast Forts Pulaski And Mcallister, Georgia, David P. Eldridge
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The United States government created America's third coastal defense system during the early-to-mid nineteenth century based upon the recommendations of the Board of Engineers of 1816. The engineers of 1816 believed the most economical means of protecting America was the construction of large, permanent forts along key areas of America's coast.
Union forces under Brigadier General Quincy Gillmore seized Fort Pulaski in April of 1862. Pulaski was one of the most formidable forts built under the third system. Gillmore required two months to install the weapons used against Pulaski; most of the time was spent installing smoothbore Columbiads, the standard …

Labor At Home: The Domestic World Of Workers At The Du Pont Powder Mills, 1802-1902, Margaret M. Mulrooney
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
While the history of the du Pont family and Du Pont Company have been well-documented, little is known about the everyday lives of the Irish Catholic immigrants who lived and worked at the home plant near Wilmington, Delaware. to correct this oversight, "Labor at Home" explores every aspect of the powder workers' domestic world--from religious beliefs, family structure, gender relations, and ethnic ties, to houses, furnishings, and yards--and uses this data to support new conclusions about cultural identity and class affiliation. as early as the 1820s, for example, powder mill families began to convey their increasing affiliation with bourgeois American …

Beyond Representation: Philosophy And Poetic Imagination, Richard Thomas Eldridge
Philosophy Faculty Works
The essays in this volume explore the ways in which traditional philosophical problems about self-knowledge, self-identity, and value have migrated into literature since the Romantic and Idealist periods. How do so-called literary works take up these problems in a new way? What conception of the subject is involved in this literary practice? How are the lines of demarcation between philosophy and literature problematized. The contributors examine these issues with reference both to Romantic and Idealist writers and to some of their subsequent literary and philosophical inheritors and revisers. Their essays offer a philosophical understanding of the roots and nature of …

Economic Interdependence Along A Colonial Frontier: Capitalism And The New River Valley, 1745-1789, B. Scott Crawford
History Theses & Dissertations
Historians have generally placed the beginning of capitalism in the United States in the early- to mid-nineteenth century. This assumes that the industrialization of the New England states fostered in a modern economic environment for the country as a whole. However, evidence of modern economic principles existed on the Virginia frontier as early as the mid-eighteenth century. As frontier settlers aspired to emulate eastern society, they not only sought to recreate a lifestyle similar to the one they left behind, but also set up similar governing practices, which in turn created social stratification similar to that which existed in the …

Spelling Instruction For Beginning Writers In Whole Language Classrooms, Gabriele Lenz
Theses Digitization Project
Teachers of beginning writers, who believe in a whole language philosophy for teaching language arts, are faced with the challenge of integrating spelling instruction into their writing programs. The following research focuses on intelligence as it relates to reading. To make reading possible for every child, varied reading materials, methods, and models must be available. Once these elements are in place for the potential reader, does intelligence make the difference in reading ability?
