Les Origines Du Socialisme Parlementaire En Australie, 1850-1920, Terry Irving Jan 2014

Les Origines Du Socialisme Parlementaire En Australie, 1850-1920, Terry Irving

Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)

An English-language version of this article appears in 'LABOUR HISTORY - A JOURNAL OF LABOUR AND SOCIAL HISTORY', 67 (November 1994), 97-109. It describes the mid-19th century origins of the working class, the impact of the early introduction of parliamentary politics, the rise of industrial unionism and the formation of the Labor parties.

Challenges To Labour History, Terry Irving Jan 2014

Challenges To Labour History, Terry Irving

Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)

The decline of the labour movement in the 1980s and 1990s robbed labour history of its elan as 'history with a social purpose', and the rise of postmodernism devalued the attempt by labour historians to grasp social reality as a whole. Today there is a commonly expressed feeling that labour history is experiencing a crisis. The first three essays in this volume are historiographical; then four essays engage with the challenges posed by post-modernism and cultural theory; and finally four essays present examples of the ways in which theoretical reappraisals can shape the writing of labour history.

Dreyfus: How He Was Framed, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Popular Media

When, 12 tumultuous years after it began, the Dreyfus case officially came to an end, one journalist was inspired with awe: "Historical records, criminal annals, romance and the drama, furnish no stranger tale of human life and destiny, than that which has reached its culmination in the final and complete exoneration of Dreyfus."

What Does Aristotle's Prime Mover Do?, Sarah Waterlow Broadie Dec 1994

What Does Aristotle's Prime Mover Do?, Sarah Waterlow Broadie

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The Prime Mover of Metaphysics Lambda is the source, above all, of eternal motion in the first sphere. It may seem silly to ask 'What (according to Lambda) does the Prime Mover do?' The answer is obvious: 'He — or it — gives rise to the motion of the first sphere'. But according to a widely accepted interpretation, this is not what the Prime Mover does first and foremost; instead, the Mover essentially contemplates. This contemplative conception is my target here. I shall adduce reasons for suspecting that the contemplative Prime Mover is not an Aristotelian postulate in Lambda, but an exegetical ...

Orlando Gets Hockey But Not Nhl Hockey, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

When the announcement came a little over a week ago The Orlando Sentinel fell over itself like the lapdog it has become for the Orlando Magic and the DeVoss family. It was of course the major news that Orlando was about to get a hockey team in the International Hockey League, and the city was about to facilitate the process with another sweetheart contract with the family DeVoss for use of the O-Arena.

Claudius: A Christmas Story, S. Ray Granade

Creative Works

"Tell us the story again," one begged. The others immediately chimed assent, and the chorus of "Yes" and "Please" arose.

"Are you sure?" I responded.

When the affirmative choir swelled again, I assented to their importuning. "It all began," I started, "a very long time ago, before I or my father or his father or even his father's father were born. It begins, as all good stories do, once upon a time."

Effective Leadership In Small Group Ministry Through The Application Of Family Systems, James Knill Dec 1994

Effective Leadership In Small Group Ministry Through The Application Of Family Systems, James Knill

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The premise of this project is that small group leaders can become more effective and caring through the application of family systems theory, specifically Bowenian theory, to the leadership process. The author developed a four-part training manual that provides a general orientation to family systems thinking for group leaders, with a specific focus on self-differentiation, homeostasis or balance, and emotional triangles. All leaders indicated improved ability to work with groups and in other settings as self-differentiated persons, though some wanted to understand the concepts more completely. All felt they were more effective leaders following the training process.

The Anabaptist Contributions To The Idea Of Religious Liberty, Barbara Monette Dec 1994

The Anabaptist Contributions To The Idea Of Religious Liberty, Barbara Monette

Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between ideas and history is important in order to understand the past and the present. The idea of religious liberty and the realization of that ideal in sixteenth-century Europe by the Anabaptists in Switzerland and South Germany in the 1520s was considered to be revolutionary in a society characterized by the union of church and state. The main impetus of the idea of religious liberty for the Anabaptists was the application of the New Testament standard of the Christian church, which was an independent congregation of believers marked only by adult baptism. The purpose of the present study ...

Exile: The Sense Of Alienation In Modern Russian Letters, David Patterson Dec 1994

Exile: The Sense Of Alienation In Modern Russian Letters, David Patterson

Slavic Languages and Societies

The life of a human community rests on common experience. Yet in modem life there is an experience common to all that threatens the very basis of community—the experience of exile. No one in the modem world has been spared the encounter with homelessness. Refugees and fugitives, the disillusioned and disenfranchised grow in number every day. Why does it happen? What does it mean? And how are we implicated?

David Patterson responds to these and related questions by examining exile, a primary motif in Russian thought over the last century and a half. By “exile” he means not only ...
