Liturgy At Ground Level, Martin A. Seltz Jan 1992

Liturgy At Ground Level, Martin A. Seltz

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

On the back yard of our parish lot is a patch of ground I drive by every day. It is the place where we have a bonfire of trees and greens on the Twelfth Night of Christmas. Each Ash Wednesday, if it is not covered by snow, it is a blackened smudge on the face of the lawn. By Easter, however, that patch seems the most alive. For there the green blade rises, unhindered by dead overgrowth, looking even greener against the charred earth.

Fear And Faith In The Fields Of Our Hearts, David G. Truemper Jan 1992

Fear And Faith In The Fields Of Our Hearts, David G. Truemper

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. This morning's sermon is in some ways a sermon that many of you have already preached this week. The lessons are familiar, and those of you who occupied pulpits across the churches of the land hear still the echo of the way the Gospel sounded in your parishes. And those of you who were occupying other roles in those parishes heard that same Gospel. It echoes its Alleluias and its amazing connections between the wounds that our Lord shows as the basis for his …

Like Wheatt Arising Green: How The Church Grows And Thrives, Walter R. Bouman Jan 1992

Like Wheatt Arising Green: How The Church Grows And Thrives, Walter R. Bouman

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

The theme for the 1991 Institute of Liturgical Studies is taken from the hymn "Now the Green Blade Rises." This wonderful Easter hymn, No. 148 in The Lutheran Book of Worship, concludes each stanza with the refrain, "Love is come again like wheat arising green." The resurrection of Jesus is portrayed as grain which sprouts from seed. The imagery comes from the Gospel of John, from a saying of Jesus, the whole context of which is instructive.

Naturalized Philosophy Of Science With A Plurality Of Methods, David J. Stump Jan 1992

Naturalized Philosophy Of Science With A Plurality Of Methods, David J. Stump

Philosophy

Naturalism implies unity of method-an application of the methods of science to the methodology of science itself and to value theory. Epistemological naturalists have tried to find a privileged discipline to be the methodological model of philosophy of science and epistemology. However, since science itself is not unitary, the use of one science as a model amounts to a reduction and distorts the philosophy of science just as badly as traditional philosophy of science distorted science, despite the fact that the central theme of naturalized philosophy of science is that methodology should be true to science as practiced. I argue …

Men And Mission: The Shifting Fortunes Of Presbyterian Men's Organizations In The Twentieth Century, Dale E. Soden Jan 1992

Men And Mission: The Shifting Fortunes Of Presbyterian Men's Organizations In The Twentieth Century, Dale E. Soden

History Faculty Scholarship

In 1906, Presbyterian men from around the country gathered in Indianapolis, Indiana, to hear not only William Jennings Bryan hut the Vice President, Charles Fairbanks, exhort them to fulfill their calling as leaders in their churches and to shape the communities in which they lived. In the 1950s, Presbyterian men confidently met hy the thousands in national meetings at the Palmer House in Chicago to plan strategies and be renewed not only with regard to their role in the church, but also in their leadership in American society. Yet as strong as men's work has been at times, at other …

Du Bois And The Boys' Club Of The 'Great Books', Bill Farrell Jan 1992

Du Bois And The Boys' Club Of The 'Great Books', Bill Farrell

Trotter Review

During the autumn of 1990 the Encyclopedia Britannica published the Great Books of the Western World, its selection of Western civilization's sixty best works. Newspapers respectfully reported the event. Commentators acclaimed the set's affirmation of Western culture. A scholarly symposium at the Library of Congress celebrated the collection's publication. The National Press Club, usually concerned with major politicians and famous journalists, invited Mortimer Adler, the series editor in chief, to address it.

In his interviews and public appearances connected with the publication of the series, Adler stressed that to be a great book a work must discuss a large …

Inside The American Stratification System: Imageries From The Black Writers, Clinton M. Jean Jan 1992

Inside The American Stratification System: Imageries From The Black Writers, Clinton M. Jean

Trotter Review

The following paper was given at a seminar, "Teaching African-American Literature," at the Center for Literary and Cultural Studies of Harvard University in April 1991. The paper addresses several questions. If social science, as a matter of scientific principle, must choose to avoid ethical conclusions, do black novelists, poets, and essayists help fill the ethical void? But then, are they objective enough?

Should The West Stop Sending Missionaries?, Larry Poston

Bible & Religion Educator Scholarship

Since 1986, The Coming Revolution in World Missions by K.P. Yohannan has been generating discussion in the evangelical world. The Indian evangelist's call for a restructuring of North American missions policy in favor of supporting native missionaries is not new to those familiar with missiological issues, but this thinking has now reached the level of the masses in the form of a best-selling book.

Stephen Crane's Maggie: A Girl Of The Streets And Kate Chopin's The Awakening: A Study In Literary Naturalism, J. Katherin Huffman Jan 1992

Stephen Crane's Maggie: A Girl Of The Streets And Kate Chopin's The Awakening: A Study In Literary Naturalism, J. Katherin Huffman

Theses & Honors Papers

During the 1890’s, two American novels, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (A Story of New York) written by Stephen Crane and The Awakening written by Kate Choplin, deal with the lives and death of two surprisingly similar young women living in different social standing and regions. Even though the novels are written by opposite sexes with opposite setting and have quite culturally different protagonists, they share the Naturalistic themes of biological determinism, which is expressed through the use of animal imagery and animal symbolism. Crane does not allow Maggie to have positive aspirations, making her appear less human and …

Bloomsbury And Gender: Isolation And Connection In The Novels Of Forster And Woolf, Terri Mccargar Jan 1992

Bloomsbury And Gender: Isolation And Connection In The Novels Of Forster And Woolf, Terri Mccargar

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This stud attempts to follow the personal and artistic struggles of Bloomsbury novelists Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster in Modern fiction which challenges conventional English society. Shared themes of isolation and connection are examined. A discussion of gender and sexuality establishes both the similarities and differences in approach between Forster's "problem" as a homosexual and Woolf's as a feminist. The thesis suggests that Maurice and Orlando serve as the creative ideal for each novelist.

Memories Of Rahija, Abe J. Bassett Jan 1992

Memories Of Rahija, Abe J. Bassett

Abe J. Bassett

Sometime in 1987, sadly, I realized that my father, who would have been 102 had he lived, passed the milestone of his 100th birthday without note or commemoration. I vowed this would not happen with my mother, Rahija Saad Bassett. In early May, 1991, I wrote to all of her children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces, cousins, and others, asking them to pause for a moment of reflection at the noon hour on her date of birth. And I also asked for a written remembrance: a story, an incident, an impression to be shared. This book is a collection of those …

Ten Types Of Ambiguity In Nahuatl Poetry, Or William Empson Among The Aztecs, Willard Gingerich

Department of English Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Though the oldest poetry of the Americas may have been composed before Caedmon's "Hymn" (ca. 680), the earliest known English poem, the languages and literatures of Native American peoples have only recently begun to receive the critical attention they demand.

In this book, twenty-three scholars in linguistics, folklore, English, and anthropology--among them Dennis Tedlock, John Bierhorst, Dell Hymes, Judith Berman, Miguel Leon-Portilla, and Louise M. Burkhart--provide a working introduction to the history, methods, and problems of translating Native American literatures. Reviewing early translations, the contributors discuss the difficulties in working with oral literature and a vast diversity of languages. Other …
