Parliaments in communist party states are usually treated in Western literature as "rubber stamp" institutions that simply approve policies made elsewhere. As such, these bodies do not perform functions of interest articulation, representation, or policy-making that are characteristic of many Western legislatures.

Town Development In The Colonial Backcountry: Virginia And North Carolina, Christopher E. Hendricks
Town Development In The Colonial Backcountry: Virginia And North Carolina, Christopher E. Hendricks
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The backcountry of colonial Virginia and North Carolina saw a process of urbanization during the third quarter of the eighteenth century uniquely shaped by a large-scale migration from colonies to the north, aided by the westward extension of local government. This rapid development did not lead to the creation of a hierarchical economic system of central places, but rather linear networks shaped by the geography of the region. Ironically, this phenomenon occurred in an area of two American colonies usually considered to be devoid of towns.;This dissertation is a study of twenty-eight towns established from 1744 to 1776 in the …

A Re-Evaluation Of The Aesthetics Of Jean-Baptiste Dubos And Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, John Grayson Nichols
A Re-Evaluation Of The Aesthetics Of Jean-Baptiste Dubos And Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, John Grayson Nichols
Honors Theses
Horace did remark "ut pictura poesis," as in painting so
poetry. But the rest of the pronouncement, rarely quoted, - "one
work seizes your fancy if you stand close to it, another if you
stand at a distance" - refers to how the arts can been viewed
from similar angles, not that the arts are essentially created
with the same purposes. Yet, misreadings of that quotation
began a history of debate over the qualities of painting and
poetry. In particular the eighteenth century became a
battleground over the ut pictura poesis formula. To the modern
reader, this controversy may seem …

Its purpose, characteristic of the Menippean genre, was didactic.

The Appellate Question: A Comparative Analysis Of Supreme Courts Of Appeal In Virginia And Louisiana, 1776-1840, Mark F. Fernandez
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation examines the processes that created supreme courts of appeal in Virginia and Louisiana and challenges the traditional view of Louisiana as an anomaly in the American judicial system. Comparison of the development of the Supreme Court of Louisiana to that of Virginia reveals important similarities in judicial practices and procedures, legal theory, and the role the courts played in the early political development of each state. In every area, the two states shared important intellectual and historical experiences.;In order to investigate the creation of these jurisdictions, this dissertation examines the political climate of both states; the background, education, …

German-Soviet Cooperation In The Baltic States And Poland, 1918 To 1920, Brian David Cameron
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis is based on German, Soviet, American, and British primary source material, as well as memoirs and a variety of secondary sources. Through an investigation of the Polish-Lithuanian dispute, the Polish-Soviet War, the Baltic attempts to achieve independence, as well as German and Soviet military manoeuvres in the Baltic region, far reaching and active cooperation, previously largely unnoticed, has been revealed. The research demonstrates that Germany and Soviet Russia, between the years 1918 and 1920, cooperated extensively in order to prevent Poland for exerting domination over the Baltic States and in attempting to prevent effective cooperation among the Baltic …

Mormons And Germany, 1914-1933: A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Germany And Its Relationship With The German Governments From World War I To The Rise Of Hitler, Jeffery L. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
This paper focuses on the Church's struggle in establishing itself in Germany with cultural, social, political and religious problems. The cultural and social problems focus primarily on the interaction between Mormon-American missionaries and leaders who preached Mormonism in a society somewhat different from their own. The political problems concern historical events such as the first world war, the inflation of 1923 in Germany, and the rise of Hitler, while the religious problems focus on the Church's interaction with other faiths who generally opposed it and the struggle of missionaries to establish congregations.

Despite efforts made to understand the Mesopotamian and Genesis flood narratives as cosmogonies, the architecture and religious symbolism of the arks remain a scholarly embarrassment. Comparisons of the design of the arks described in Gilgamesh XI and Genesis 6—8 traditionally have focused on the sharp incompatibility of their dimensions. I shall attempt to demonstrate by a close

Review Essay Of Two Books On The History Of Science, Charles Kay Smith
Review Essay Of Two Books On The History Of Science, Charles Kay Smith
Charles Kay Smith
Contrary to what I was taught in high school in the mid-1940s, science is no longer defined as an inductive methodology for immaculately conceiving culture-free truth after sifting through a huge data base of objective facts. For without some prior hypothesis to guide her, a scientist would not be able to decide which facts were relevant. Nowadays hypotheses can come from anywhere in the imagination or culture within which the scientist is working. The importance of a scientific hypothesis is that it be framed in such a way that it can be falsified when tested. Science now has a history …
