Christmas Lights... And The Light Of Christmas, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1990

Christmas Lights... And The Light Of Christmas, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "My views on the meaning of Christmas have undergone two major changes. The first came as a six-year-old when I realized that Santa Claus, reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman were different from baby Jesus, donkeys, and manger scenes. After all, Christmas is the celebration of Jesus' birth, not just a worldwide holiday filled with festivities and lights."

On Crossing Oceans And Mud Puddles, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1990

On Crossing Oceans And Mud Puddles, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Cross-Cultural

ministry may be one of the most difficult kinds of ministry to grasp, and yet it can also be one of the most rewarding. Indeed, the crossing of an ocean for Christ often seems easier than crossing the mud puddle between our house and the neighbors'. Of course it is not, but the lure of doing something ''big" for God often blinds us to the "good" that can be done, and needs to be done, right in our neighborhoods. When Jesus reduced the entire law 'Of Moses to two priorities, the love of God and the love of …

On Changing The Letters... In The Quaker Alphabet Soup, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1990

On Changing The Letters... In The Quaker Alphabet Soup, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "To some, the changing of EFA to EFI may appear to be an insignificant change of organizational initials, while to others it may seem more like simply a different spoonful of letters from the Quaker Alphabet Soup. But what does the change really mean? Only time will reveal the true differences prefigured by changing the Evangelical Friends Alliance to Evangelical Friends International. However, even from our perspective today, a few implications may still be drawn."

The Present Leadership Of The Resurrected Lord, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1990

The Present Leadership Of The Resurrected Lord, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "While Christians believe in the resurrection of Christ, too few have taken seriously what it means to live under His present leadership. In fact, the implications of believing in the resurrected Lord may be among the most neglected aspects of the Christian faith! Such neglect was one of the factors that spurred the missionary zeal of George Fox and other early Friends, who sought to spread the Gospel of the living Lord to all parts of the earth, Christian and otherwise. The world still needs this message today, at Easter time and always. As George Fox put it in …

Participation And Atonement, Roger Newell Jan 1990

Participation And Atonement, Roger Newell

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

How does the victory of Christ over sin and death impinge on my life nearly two thousand years later, so that, as Professor Torrance bas described it, his death becomes my death and his resurrection my resurrection? I will respond to this question by briefly discussing two 'subject-centred appropriation' models and concluding with an 'object-centred participation' model. The meaning of these phrases will be unpacked as the discussion progresses. However, at the outset it is important to note that the object-centred model is based on a more radical understanding of the incarnation which has been advocated by Professor Torrance and …
