David Roberts And The Mountain Of My Fear, Paul J. Rich Dec 1985

David Roberts And The Mountain Of My Fear, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

The travel writer and famous mountain climber David Roberts and I were both in the Harvard Mountaineering Club, and Dave's comments about that august if somewhat eccentric group are well worth a read. One of his titles, Mountain of My Fear, usefully describes in a phrase my own minute adventures: nobody ever held on for dear life with such passion. The secret of the famous egg nogg is reveale here for the time: 8 eggs 3 cups heavy whipping cream 2 cups whole milk 1 cup sugar 1cup brandy 1 cup dark rum 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon nutmeg, …

A Case Study In Amateur Conflict: The Athletic War In Canada, 1906-1908, Don Morrow Dec 1985

A Case Study In Amateur Conflict: The Athletic War In Canada, 1906-1908, Don Morrow

Donald Morrow

The major objective of this article was to examine the issues prominent in Canada’s amateur ‘athletic war.’ Officially, the schism boiled down to a disagreement between two groups over whether or not amateurs could be allowed to participate with and/or against professionals in team sports while still retaining their amateur standing. The two warring factions were the Canadian Amateur Athletic Union (CAAU) and the Amateur Athletic Federation of Canada (AAF of C); in reality, it was an ideological power struggle between the emerging centre of sport in twentieth century Canada, Toronto, and the revered hub of organized sport in nineteenth …

The Departures Of The Essenes, Christians And R. Yohanan Ben Zakkai From Jerusalem, Asher Finkel Ph.D. Dec 1985

The Departures Of The Essenes, Christians And R. Yohanan Ben Zakkai From Jerusalem, Asher Finkel Ph.D.

Rabbi Asher Finkel, Ph.D.

I have prepared this phenomenological study of "Departure from Jerusalem," with Judaism and early Christianity in mind, in recognition of the sincere concern and academic work in Judaica so impressively displayed by my esteemed friend, Dr. Reinhold Mayer, upon reaching the age of three scores. I do not forget his dedication to the study and the translation of the Talmudic texts for his successful anthology in German and hold in warm regard the memory of this period of the past. He remained a true guide to introduce the treasures of Jacob and to effect a positive link to Israel on …

The Adventures Of Captain Mulyono: Indonesian Intelligence Operations In Kalimantan, 1946-1948, Robert Cribb Dec 1985

The Adventures Of Captain Mulyono: Indonesian Intelligence Operations In Kalimantan, 1946-1948, Robert Cribb

Robert Cribb

Translation (with introduction and annotations) of the interrogation report of an Indonesian intelligence officer operating in Dutch-occupied Kalimantan (Borneo) during the Indonesian Revolution. The account provides information on Republican intelligence organization and its internal tensions, and indicates the practical difficulties faced by intelligence officers. The ease with which Mulyono, a Javanese, operated amongst the people of Kalimantan, however, reflects the strength of Indonesian national identity.
