The Pipe Organ: An Honors Special Study, Mary Dearmond Dec 1973

The Pipe Organ: An Honors Special Study, Mary Dearmond

Honors Theses

Largest and most complex of musical instruments, the pipe organ is fundamentally a wind instrument. The average modern grand organ consists not of one organ but of three or more, arranged so that the player can operate them all at once. Each of these organs has its own set of pipes and its own keyboard. The keyboards, called manuals, have a stairlike arrangement but overlap into the playing unit, called the console, and a special pedal keyboard operated by the player's feet is placed on the floor underneath the manuals.

The White Man's Burden, Nelson V. Shaw Dec 1973

The White Man's Burden, Nelson V. Shaw

Honors Theses

This paper is concerned with a broad, general defining of the concept of the "White Man's Burden." There is a brief history given leading up to the "White Man's Burden," with emphasis on the Monroe Doctrine. The three composing factors of the "White Man's Burden" are Christianity, Pragmatism, and Manifest Destiny; they are explained in detail and an attempt has been made to show how they form a cohesive unit, and in turn, a foreign policy. This paper has attempted to show the beginning of American foreign policy with the hopes of better understanding our foreign policy in the 1970's.

The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale Nov 1973

The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale

Honors Theses

Parliament passed its first comprehensive public health act in 1848. Prior to that time Britain as well as other European countries had mostly just tolerated insanitary conditions.

In English medieval towns people threw their garbage onto the narrow streets where animals--pigs, cattle, ducks--roamed, Houses were built with projections over the streets which blocked light and ventilation. There were few qualms about slaughtering animals on the streets. The common method of sewerage was by cesspools which in some cases were built underneath the houses and in most cases were cleaned out only once every several years by the "dust-collectors". Even in …

The Status Of Woman Suffrage In Virginia 1909-1920, Betty C. Pitts Nov 1973

The Status Of Woman Suffrage In Virginia 1909-1920, Betty C. Pitts

Honors Theses

The woman suffrage movement in Virginia, as in other parts of the nation, must be viewed within the total context of reform which pervaded in the first two decades of the twentieth century in America. The evils associated with the industrial revolution, mass immigration, and the urban crisis produced in the minds of men and women a favorable climate for sweeping sociological changes. Despite the receptive attitudes of individual men and women, the woman suffrage movement could never have been successful without "a heroic mustering of effort....," which has never since been achieved by this same group expect during a …

Richard Wagner: His Politics, His Personality And His Music, John R. Spraggins May 1973

Richard Wagner: His Politics, His Personality And His Music, John R. Spraggins

Honors Theses

"Wagner is like a huge mountain in our path. We can try to climb it; we can never reach the top." These words were spoken by the German composer and conductor Richard Strauss. They were spoken of Richard Wagner some time after his death. He was a man of great passion, talent and energy. At no time was a middle course possible for him. It was either all or nothing. In this respect he was consistent but when one looks at the details of his life it can be seen that he is nothing but constant inconsistencies. He was all …

The Significance Of Characterization In The Preparation And Composition Of "The Marriage Of Figaro", Philip Wayne Hardin Apr 1973

The Significance Of Characterization In The Preparation And Composition Of "The Marriage Of Figaro", Philip Wayne Hardin

Honors Theses

In the 1770's and 1780's two plays written by a Frenchman named Beaumarchais were creating quite a stir in Europe. They challenged and ridiculed the inherent "superiority" of the aristocrats of French society. Later called "the prelude to the French Revolution," these plays were quite controversial and therefore immensely popular. The Barber of Seville and its sequel, The Marriage of Figaro, became instantly well known and both were adapted for opera, the former by Giovanni Paisiello, the latter by Wolfgang A. Mozart.

Sinfonia Eroica: Beethoven's Third Symphony, Rex Moreland Terry Mar 1973

Sinfonia Eroica: Beethoven's Third Symphony, Rex Moreland Terry

Honors Theses

In 1803 young Europe regarded Napoleon I as its Messiah and apostle of liberty, very much as it was destined for a short time, one hundred and fifteen years later, to regard Woodrow Wilson.

The ambassador of the French Republic to the Austrian court was at that time General Bernadotte. His salon was frequented by distinguished persons of all ranks among whom was Ludwig van Beethoven, who had already expressed great admiration for the First Consul of the Republic. The suggestion was made by the General that Beethoven should honor the greatest hero of the age in a musical composition. …

Because our University offers no academic course specifically in costuming, I decided, under the supervision of my department counselor, Mr. Raymond Caldwell, to attempt an Honors project in this area.

The Camden Expedition: Spring, 1864, James Adrian Ryan Jr. Jan 1973

The Camden Expedition: Spring, 1864, James Adrian Ryan Jr.

Honors Theses

General Nathaniel P. Banks assumed command of the Department of the Gulf for the United States on November 8, 1862. IN assuming his office Banks received orders from General-in-Chief Henry W. Halleck conveying President Lincoln's concern that no time be lost in opening the Mississippi River for military and naval operations. As soon as this was accomplished, Banks was to consider other operations, such as an expedition up the Red River to liberate the cotton and sugar in Northern Louisiana and Southern Arkansas. He was also to establish a base of operation for the invasion of Texas. This decision was …

A Brief Summary Of The Origin Of Afghans And Knitting, Becky Nichols Jan 1973

A Brief Summary Of The Origin Of Afghans And Knitting, Becky Nichols

Honors Theses

The origins of most types of needlework in general are not known exactly. There are examples of embroidery in early Egypt, Rome and Greece. It was developed later in the Orient, in Europe, England, and even later in America. Other types of needlework have similar histories.

There is not much information on the origin of the afghan itself. They were made (usually embroidered) as far back as the Victorian age in England and were used as carriage robes.

Embroidery And Crochet, Bennie Carol Burgess Jan 1973

Embroidery And Crochet, Bennie Carol Burgess

Honors Theses

Embroidery is sometimes called needle-painting. The word embroidery comes from the Anglo-Saxon word, meaning edge or border. There are many different kinds of stitches, some to outline a design, and others to fill in an entire area for a design. One of the advantages of embroidery is that it can be as simple or as complicated as you want.

Crochet, which developed as a way of making fine lace, has grown into a very versatile type of needlework. The French word "crochet", meaning crooked, applied to the crochet hook, and gave crocheted lace its name. There are three main stitches--chain, …

Psychic Wholeness In Blake And Jung, Walter B. Gallant Jan 1973

Psychic Wholeness In Blake And Jung, Walter B. Gallant

Honors Theses

There is no doubt that for most modern readers the work of William Blake is an enigma. I should like to suggest that the work of the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung offers one way to bring a sense of order and meaning to Blake's work.

A Study On The Acoustical Foundations Of Music By John Backus, Sally Mccarty Jan 1973

A Study On The Acoustical Foundations Of Music By John Backus, Sally Mccarty

Honors Theses

For this project, the book, The Acoustical Foundations of Music, by John Backus, was read and studied. The purpose of reading this book was twofold. The first was to gain a better understanding of how musical sounds are produced and transmitted to the listener. The second purpose was to decide whether or not this book would be suitable to use as a textbook in a course dealing with acoustics as it applies to music. Since it would be impractical to discus in the bounds of this paper, all that was learned concerning the subject of acoustics, the topic of …

Autism And Music Therapy, Gennie Eldridge Jan 1973

Autism And Music Therapy, Gennie Eldridge

Honors Theses

In 1943, in Autistic Disturbance of Affective Contact, Leo Kanner describe eleven children whose symptoms appeared to constitute a unique syndrome. This was termed "early infantile autism" in 1944. Early infantile autism is a syndrome of which the symptoms can usually be traced back to the fourth month of life, but that often does not become disturbingly evident until the first or second year. Outstanding characteristics include extreme withdrawal from contact with people an obsessive need for sameness in the environment; skillful manipulation of objects and often an affectionate relationship to them; a physical appearance of intelligence; and speech …

Honors Project [A Tailored Garment], Pauletta Flowers Jan 1973

Honors Project [A Tailored Garment], Pauletta Flowers

Honors Theses

When I began thinking about starting my honors project, I came up with several ideas but the one that interested me most was the making of a tailored garment. My major is home economics so I thought this would be a good experience for me and a good time to learn something new. I liked the idea that I could work on my own and at my own speed, and could make appointments with Mrs. Elledge when convenient for both of us.

I have made garments before but I've never taken on such a large project or as detailed as …

Creative Drama, Glenna Kay Despain Jan 1973

Creative Drama, Glenna Kay Despain

Honors Theses

Creative dramatics, in this paper, will be defined as a group art for children which will be treated as a separate phase from children's theatre. Children's theatre is the term given to the form of drama which exists for the purpose of the child audience. Creative dramatics is the term given to the form of drama which exists for the purpose of the child participant. Creative dramatics is not concerned with training children to become actors, nor in the creating of plays for an audience. It is aimed toward the development of the whole child, socially, emotionally, intellectually, physically, and …

Modern Art Through Geometric Eyes, Janice M. West Jan 1973

Modern Art Through Geometric Eyes, Janice M. West

Honors Theses

When tourists--even homefolks--go through a modern art museum, many opinions are accumulated. Some people may have chills when they see a certain painting, while others get a sick feeling of dizziness when they see the same one. In fact, if there were an opinion box at the exit of an art show, I imagine you could almost accurately count the different opinions by counting the total number of people who viewed the show. Yet, there is one opinion that most 'ole foggies' (and I use the term loosely) would agree upon, and that is this: "Why that's nothing but a …
