Graduate Recital, Donna Gatlin Davis May 1977

Graduate Recital, Donna Gatlin Davis

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Preparation for the graduate recital provides the Master's candidate an opportunity to exercise a variety of musical skills. Choosing the best possible program requires not only a working knowledge of the available repertory, but a personal assessment of the particular voice with its characteristic strengths and weaknesses. The final selection must reflect a fine balance of material difficult enough to provide a musical challenge and material with which a singer can feel comfortable in communicating.

Working toward the performance involves both intellectual preparation through research and physical preparation through vocal conditioning. It is not enough to anticipate vocal difficulties and …

Eyes On The Branches: Poems, And An Essay On Contemporary Poetry, Richard Cass May 1973

Eyes On The Branches: Poems, And An Essay On Contemporary Poetry, Richard Cass

Senior Scholar Papers

The thirty poems collected here were written durin 1972-197. They begin as rather imagistic pieces, but the imagist tendencies are tempered with a preoccupation with the process of emotion. The poems progress through a middle period of finding a poetic voice by combining elements of other styles with the stylistic tendencies that rise out of myself. The subject matter is deliberately varied. The poems emerge, in the last few pieces, as the beginnings of a voice which combines a preoccupation with man in the unity of the world, the state of natural world and the nature of its retaliation for …

The Ancient Mariner's Conversion : Coleridge, Religion, And The Rime, Meta Margaret Lale Jan 1972

The Ancient Mariner's Conversion : Coleridge, Religion, And The Rime, Meta Margaret Lale

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

My thesis that Coleridge employed universal images of the supernatural and traditional Christian symbols to illustrate the Mariner’s religious conversion in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The basis for this proposition is that Coleridge made religion the Rime’s theme. The following validations of the religious theme proposal will be offered in these chapters: (1) The religious theme synthesizes two popular but unsatisfactory thematic statements: “estrangement” and “sacramental vision.”; (2) Coleridge’s philosophical system is founded upon the postulation of a supernatural reality. The Mariner’s conversion may be seen as his change from Aristotelian conceptualism (which recognizes one reality - nature) …

Bayard Taylor's The Prophet: Mormonism As Literary Taboo; Calaveras County Comes Of Age; The Erosion Of Belief In The Poetry Of Clinton F. Larson, Thomas D. Schwartz

Theses and Dissertations

The three papers included in this thesis reflect my development as a graduate student during the course of my master's program at Brigham Young Universtiy. I came to Brigham Young University interested in creative writing and developed a love for research and criticism. My work in nineteenth century American literature led to the first two papers. Both deal with literary history, the first narrow in scope, devoted to a study of the significance of a single play, the second broad in scope, devoted to a study of the unifying thread of anti-sentimentalism in the writings of the major American realists. …

Reflections Of A Lost Harmony In Seventeenth Century Poetry, Cathy Perkins Jan 1972

Reflections Of A Lost Harmony In Seventeenth Century Poetry, Cathy Perkins

Honors Theses

During the seventeenth century man continued to hold onto comfortable old of the "Elizabethan world picture," but the impact of the new science grew steadily. Donne and Wilton both used images from the old world view and the new discoveries; but in the final analysis they both rejected worldly system and turned to faith. Many seventeenth century poets turned to faith, perhaps as an answer to their despair. For Donne and Wilton the harmony was lost. In "The First Anniversary," Donne wrote that harmony had died and that the new ideas made everything questionable. Wilton's Adam and Eve fell from …

To Maintain The Sublime: Art, Reality, And Society In The Work Of Ezra Pound, Camilla Bunker Haase Jan 1970

To Maintain The Sublime: Art, Reality, And Society In The Work Of Ezra Pound, Camilla Bunker Haase

Honors Papers

It is the purpose of this paper to find out what that conception was: to extract from Pound's critical writings the fundamental beliefs about the nature and function of art which governed his activities. During the most active part of his life, one thus discovers, Pound was governed by a mimetic theory of art: a work of art, he thought, is an accurate representation of an artist's impression of reality. Poe can-thus provide reliable information about the way people respond to reality, about the way they behave--data which, Pound believed, can and indeed must be used in formulating; ethical codes. …

Furthermore, it is believed that much of the poetry read does not meet the standards of "good poetry for children" as measured by experts in this field of learning.

The study revealed that only 11 percent …

Suggested Criteria For Determining The Antiquity Of The Ancient Poems In The Old Testament, John Miller May 1967

Suggested Criteria For Determining The Antiquity Of The Ancient Poems In The Old Testament, John Miller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Within the Old Testament there is a group of poems which a majority of scholars believe is quite old. In most of the books and articles which have been written on these poems, the songs are designated "ancient" or "archaic" in a rather arbitrary manner. It is the contention of this thesis that the archaic poetry is different from later poetic writing with respect to style, form, and language, and that it is possible to isolate the distinguishing characteristics of ancient poetry and, using them, to form criteria and establish a balance of probability as to the antiquity of a …

The Poetry Of Matthew Arnold: A Study In Versification, Douglas A. Mathewson Jul 1965

The Poetry Of Matthew Arnold: A Study In Versification, Douglas A. Mathewson

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the great number of published works that deal with English prosody or the more restricted subject of versification, there is a noticeable scarcity of studies that describe the practices of individual poets. One of the more apparent reasons for the meager number of versification studies is the instability of the basic criteria by which a poem is examined. Prosodists quite simply find it difficult to establish concrete principles of scansion that are acceptable to all other prosodists. Without going into discussion of the various schools of thought on metrical structure, suffice it to say that there are conflicting opinions …

The Orc Symbol In William Blake's Works, Michael James Finnigan Aug 1964

The Orc Symbol In William Blake's Works, Michael James Finnigan

Graduate Student Research Papers

A study of Orc, Blake's symbol for energy, suggests several different hypotheses. This paper intends to test the hypothesis that Orc is a force. With the use of illustrations and explications, Orc becomes more clearly a symbol of Blake's imaginative form. This energy will be seen at each level of Blake's visions, each different psychological stage, and at the highest level, poetic imagination. Thus, as the creator creates, the creation becomes the molded form of the creator's imagination.

The Concept Of God In The Poetry Of The American Negro, Mary H. Jones Sr.

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation

Many authors have written much about the Negro and religion. Those who know the black man in American readily concede that he is by nature a lover of God, and that this great innate belief manifests itself in his daily life. Books of deep and light reading- some written in prose, others in verse- have been produced by American Negro men and women. Many of their works have mirrored forth the concept of God in the mind of the Afro-American; but this concept has not remained the same- this great faith is at present suffering decay.
