Jeremy Bentham And The Development Of English Utilitarianism, James William Gepson Oct 1965

Jeremy Bentham And The Development Of English Utilitarianism, James William Gepson

Student Work

The eighteenth century in one sense may be viewed as the second Hundred Years War. The century saw France and England continue their struggle for colonial empire and commercial advantage. William Pitt the Elder (1706-1778) led England to victory in the mid-century conflict primarily through his use of English see Power.1 The cost of the conflict laid great burdens on the English taxpayer and English statesmen demanded that the colonies begin to bear a share of the cost of imperial defense. Such a policy firmly applied by Lord Townsend, led to the American Revolution which began a partial reversal …

Social Status At The Court Of Alfonso Viii Of Castile, Lorle Ann Porter May 1965

Social Status At The Court Of Alfonso Viii Of Castile, Lorle Ann Porter

History ETDs

Excerpt from introduction:

This is a study of the social structure of Castile in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. The charter witness lists of that period as edited by Júlio González were the basis for this study. Charters formed an important part of the documentation of the Middle Ages. Royal charters, in general, officially conveyed the use of a specific property to a person who agreed to accept designated responsibilities. As the possession and or use of land was a key to medieval economy, it was essential that ownership or legitimate occupation was clear to the authorities. The …

Polish Settlement At Yalta: An Act Of Betrayal Or An Act Of Realism?, Harold R. Mogg Jul 1964

Polish Settlement At Yalta: An Act Of Betrayal Or An Act Of Realism?, Harold R. Mogg

Graduate Student Research Papers

With all of this apparent concern by the Big Three regarding Poland, why has there been so much criticism of the Polish settlement at Yalta? Did Roosevelt and Churchill actually appease Stalin in regard to the Polish settlement? What was this settlement at Yalta--an act of betrayal or an act of realism? This is the confusing question that the writer of this paper will attempt to answer.

The Russian Revolution Of 1905 As Depicted By Contemporary American Reports, With Special Emphasis On The "Bloody Sunday" Incident Of January 22, 1905, Patrick Kay Bidelman

Masters Theses

Preface

On Sunday morning, January 22, 1905, a crowd of workers marched through the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia. They were led by a Russian Orthodox priest, Father George Gapon, who had a petition to grievances to present to Czar Nicholas II. As they converged on the square in front of the Winter Palace, they were fired upon by the Imperial troops. The result was a complete military victory for the autocracy and a casualty rate among the petitioners that has caused the incident to go down in history as "Bloody Sunday."

On Monday, January 23, newspapers throughout the United …

Erasmus And Luther: Precursors Of A Mass Movement, Martha Reinmuth Mar 1962

Erasmus And Luther: Precursors Of A Mass Movement, Martha Reinmuth

Graduate Student Research Papers

In his book, The True Believer, Eric Hoffer, with Machiavellian detachment, sets forth a theory on the nature of mass movements. This paper will be primarily concerned with the aspect of Mr. Hoffer' s theory that deals with the setting of the stage for a mass movement--specifically, the temperament, needs, and motives of the men who perform this prerequisite act. Though many and influential were the contributions of other men to the preparation for the final act of church reform in the sixteenth century, it is generally conceded that Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther's names stand out in the boldest …

Ritual Aspects Of The Far Eastern Secular Arts, William George Webster Mcconnell Jan 1959

Ritual Aspects Of The Far Eastern Secular Arts, William George Webster Mcconnell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A few words with regard to certain aspects of the terms religious art and secular art seem appropriate to a proper statement of the problem to be investigated in this thesis. In recent years Western students of art have real177ized that many instances exist which may not be classified easily in either category. Peter Fingesten, a student of the arts, has suggested that the term sacred art might beat be reserved for icons, paintings, reliquaries, and all implements of ritual and worship. Art objects in this category are produced according to hieratic code and symbolism. On the other hand, there …

The Influence Of The Zwinglian Reformation Through Bishop John Hooper Upon The Church Of England, Milton A. Rohane May 1958

The Influence Of The Zwinglian Reformation Through Bishop John Hooper Upon The Church Of England, Milton A. Rohane

History ETDs

The influence of both Luther and Calvin upon the English Reformation has long been recognized by historians within and without the Church of England. They have been given credit for instigating particular men and movements to push for the further reformation of the Church of England. Little to no credit has been given to the work of both Zwingli and Bullinger and their influence on the leaders of the Church of England during the early years of the period of reformation.

In addition, Bishop John Hooper of Worcester and Gloucester has been neglected by the historians of the Church of …

Political And Economic Factors In The Decline Of The British Empire, Pasquale Anania Jan 1956

Political And Economic Factors In The Decline Of The British Empire, Pasquale Anania

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The decline of British influence in world affairs is one of the more pronounced political phenomena of modern times. Over the past century key territories subject to British rule have been slipping loose from their imperial moorings at an ever more rapid rate. Those remaining subject to British authority grow progressively more belligerent.

In his search for an understanding or this eclipse or British sovereignty, the contemporary historian finds himself groping through a network of complexly interrelated social, political, economic, and psychological processes. One or another student or history has argued that specific instances or groups of these processes are …

A Study Of The Legend And Cult Of The Boy Martyr, Saint William Of Norwich, Helen B. Scrivner

History ETDs

For some years following the death of Saint William the cult flourished and many people came to the tomb of the boy saint to worship and seek miraculous help. It is the aim of this study to follow the diffusion of the story and its impression on those who it reached. We will plot the geographical range of the cult for the twenty-eight years covered by the chronicle. We will also consider other historical evidence of the story having reached localities not mentioned in the narrative. We will suggest ways that the information may have been carried. Besides following the …

Juan Luis Vives' Concept Of History, Anne M. Riley May 1950

Juan Luis Vives' Concept Of History, Anne M. Riley

History ETDs

Among those humanists of the sixteenth century whose literary output reflects an awareness of the need for clearly defined method in the writing of history is the Spanish-born scholar, Juan Luis Vives. Although he achieved his fame largely in the field of social reform, education, and psychology, Vives had much to say on the value and method of history. A good deal has been written on many aspects of Vives' thought, but virtually no attention has been given to his ideas on history. Only his most extensive biographer, Bonilla y San Martin, makes a serious effort to separate from the …

The Place Of English Party Politics As A Factor In The Causes Of The War Of Jenkins' Ear, 1739, Ruth Patty Rosenzweig May 1949

The Place Of English Party Politics As A Factor In The Causes Of The War Of Jenkins' Ear, 1739, Ruth Patty Rosenzweig

History ETDs

That curiously titled incident, "The War of Jenkins' Ear," has received varied treatment by historians. It has been a challenge to the justifiers of English imperialism, and it has attracted those interested in early colonial policies and lovers of the piquant. The earliest historians interested in the war were preoccupied with Jenkins and the ear itself. Later historians stressed the international causes of the war--the colonial commercial and territorial dissension between England and Spain--the two protagonists in the war. While these international antagonisms were the underlying causes of the war, they were not precipitating factors. Study of the sources shows …

A Historical Study Of The Port Of Hull During The Thirteenth Century, Floyd Winfield Snyder Jun 1948

A Historical Study Of The Port Of Hull During The Thirteenth Century, Floyd Winfield Snyder

History ETDs

The history of the port of Hull during the thirteenth century has presented a problem for historians in which has never been completely solved. This problem is centered around the traditional building of Hull in 1293 by Edward I. According to this tradition, Hull did not exist until this time. Evidence in the chronicle of the monastery of Meaux and those close and patent rolls, however, indicates that Hull was a port of some importance in the thirteenth century.
