Toward A Theology Of Transformation, Hannah Kathleen Griggs
Toward A Theology Of Transformation, Hannah Kathleen Griggs
Eddie Mabry Diversity Award
Black liberation theologians come to terms with white supremacy by collectively remembering the story of the Exodus and Jesus' crucifixion--affirming God's preference for freedom and in-the-world salvation. The particular history of white American Christianity requires a different story to provide the foundation for our social memory. As white American Christians, we have certain blind spots—blind spots created by historical and social privileges that have given white people unequal access to power and resources. The story of Zacchaeus has the potential to help reframe white Christianity’s conception of race relations in the United States, shifting from a reconciliation paradigm to a …
Crusader Orientalism: Depictions Of The Eastern Other In Medieval Crusade Writings, Henry Schaller
Crusader Orientalism: Depictions Of The Eastern Other In Medieval Crusade Writings, Henry Schaller
Summer Research
This paper examines the ways in which different texts (crusade chronicles, French epic poems, and crusade sermons) written during the early Crusades and Crusader States created a coherent portrait of the East. It compare the ways Edward Said’s Orientalism, which examines colonial texts, and the effect their portrait of the East had on European identity, with texts of the Crusades. These texts cast the Orient into a place that was the antithesis of Christendom, defining what it meant to have a Christian, European white identity. This was done through representations of: threatening sexuality, skin color, unlimited wealth, and a fictional …
Belonging To The Imperial Nation: Rethinking The History Of The First World War In Britain And Its Empire, Susan R. Grayzel
Belonging To The Imperial Nation: Rethinking The History Of The First World War In Britain And Its Empire, Susan R. Grayzel
History Faculty Publications
In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the First World War in 2014–18, the British government set aside funds for a range of commemorative activities. These included a number of “engagement centres” that aimed to bring together academics and local community members in addition to providing separate arts-related programming.1 The Imperial War Museum reworked its main First World War galleries, which opened with great fanfare at the centenary’s start. This denotes a kind of publicly sanctioned interest in a war that Britain had won, after all, but that popular memory had enshrined as something quite different, something that required …
South Asian American Visual Culture And Representation, Bakirathi Mani
South Asian American Visual Culture And Representation, Bakirathi Mani
English Literature Faculty Works
South Asian American visual culture is a diverse field of visual art, created by artists who are first-, second- and third-generation immigrants from Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, among other diasporic locations (e.g., Kenya). South Asian American artists work in a range of media forms, including photography, sculpture, installation, video, painting, and drawing. Collectively, these artworks are frequently exhibited in museums and galleries as depictions of contemporary South Asian immigrant life. However, a close reading of individual works produces a more dynamic picture. Instead of viewing South Asian American visual culture solely in terms of artists’ own immigrant biographies, scholarship and …

Jenyffer Nascimento’S Epic Poetry Of Black Female Empowerment Jenyffer Nascimento: A Poesia Épica De Empoderamento Da Mulher Negra, Sarah S. Ohmer
Publications and Research
This article presents results of auto-ethnography, literary analysis, and fieldwork research to answer an underlying, perhaps unresolved, concern, relevant to this dossier: how can we produce an ethical dialogue as transnational Black Feminists, among Black Brazilian women, and North American Black women, in an ethical manner, while realizing that one may (not ever) be a part of the “carnival without you in it.” Fertile Earth/ Terra Fertil tells a long overdue epic story to an audience within the poetry: Black women, family members, other times a Black man, Brazil, white women, or “you,” undefined. Joy to pain to chaos, sensuality, …

What Race Terms Do: Du Bois, Biology, And Psychology On The Meanings Of “Race”, Glenn "Boomer" Mac Trujillo
What Race Terms Do: Du Bois, Biology, And Psychology On The Meanings Of “Race”, Glenn "Boomer" Mac Trujillo
Faculty Scholarship
This paper does two things. First, it interprets the work of W. E. B. Du Bois to reveal that the meanings of race terms are grounded by both a historical and an aspirational component. Race terms refer to a backward-looking component that traces the history of the group to its present time, as well as a forward-looking component that sets out values and goals for the group. Race terms thus refer to a complex cluster of concepts that involve biological, sociological, historical, moral, and political properties. Second, the paper defends W. E. B. Du Bois’s conservationist thesis about races, which …
A Conversation Rewound: Queer And Racialized Temporalities In Hamilton, Shereen Inayatulla, Andie Silva
A Conversation Rewound: Queer And Racialized Temporalities In Hamilton, Shereen Inayatulla, Andie Silva
Publications and Research
The authors of this article, two educators and immigrants situated in the United States, consider the exigencies of listening to Hamilton: An American Musical. Shaped as dialogue, this article follows a previous piece where the authors processed their experience seeing Hamilton performed live. The current conversation shifts to the act of listening; it examines the ways in which the soundtrack embeds the audience into Lin-Manuel Miranda’s narrative, reinscribing the racialized immigrant body onto both Alexander Hamilton’s story, and Hamilton, the musical. Additionally, this article asks how the fictional Hamilton’s message to rise up and take a shot grants audience members …
The Animalistic Brown Penis And The Meek White Penis In “The English Patient” And “Fun Home”, Tarun Malik
The Animalistic Brown Penis And The Meek White Penis In “The English Patient” And “Fun Home”, Tarun Malik
Student Works
"The English Patient" and "Fun Home" are both texts that involve the topic of sex and male sexuality. However, these topics are handled very differently when it comes to race. "The English Patient" treats a harmless brown man as a threat whereas "Fun Home" portrays an abusive white man as safe. This paper examines the differences in treatment and reflects on what this says about the view of men-of-color as sexual threats in the culture at large.
Language Politics And The Constitution Of Racialized Subjects In The Corinthian Church, Ekaputra Tupamahu
Language Politics And The Constitution Of Racialized Subjects In The Corinthian Church, Ekaputra Tupamahu
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
This study examines the phenomenon of speaking in tongue(s) in the Corinthian church from the point of view of the politics of language. Instead of seeing tongue(s) as a problem of unintelligible-ecstatic speech, it reconsiders this phenomenon as a linguistic struggle. Tongue(s), in this sense, is a multilingual social dynamic that Paul perceives as chaotic. Special attention is given to the role of language as one of the crucial markers of the ancient Greeks’ collective identity. The barbarians are their imaginative and discursive ‘others’ who do not share their language. It is within this sociopolitical context that the employment of …

Critical Terms In Caribbean And Latin American Thought: Historical And Institutional Trajectories., Rebecca Janzen
Faculty Publications
Through a collection of critical essays, this work explores twelve keywords central in Latin American and Caribbean Studies: indigenismo, Americanism, colonialism, criollismo, race, transculturation, modernity, nation, gender, sexuality, testimonio, and popular culture. The central question motivating this work is how to think—epistemologically and pedagogically—about Latin American and Caribbean Studies as fields that have had different historical and institutional trajectories across the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States.
Critical Race Ip, Anjali Vats, Deidre A. Keller
Critical Race Ip, Anjali Vats, Deidre A. Keller
Articles
In this Article, written on the heels of Race IP 2017, a conference we co-organized with Amit Basole and Jessica Silbey, we propose and articulate a theoretical framework for an interdisciplinary movement that we call Critical Race Intellectual Property (Critical Race IP). Specifically, we argue that given trends toward maximalist intellectual property policy, it is now more important than ever to study the racial investments and implications of the laws of copyright, trademark, patent, right of publicity, trade secret, and unfair competition in a manner that draws upon Critical Race Theory (CRT). Situating our argument in a historical context, we …
Racial Prioritization In Black-White Relationships, Nia Tariq
Racial Prioritization In Black-White Relationships, Nia Tariq
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
The utilization of race as a proxy for evaluating different characteristics of others contains risk because it results in stereotyping and potential alienation of individuals from negatively judged groups. This concept motivated me to uncover the extent to which race affects intimate relationships amongst the historically opposed groups of blacks and whites in the United States. I am studying the historic racially-driven marginalization of blacks and the resulting relationship to recent dating and marriage patterns between black-white interracial pairs. I want to find out why the socioeconomic advantage held by whites is transmutated into dating culture, in order to understand …
