Monday Night Football's 25th Anniversary, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 1994

Monday Night Football's 25th Anniversary, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It is the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of Monday Night Football. The other networks laughed when ABC announced it was going to take NFL football into prime time. Who would watch? By Monday everyone was suffering from football burnout what with the College games on Saturday, and the double network double headers on Sunday. It just wouldn't work.

Review Of Fire From Heaven: Life In An English Town In The Seventeenth Century By David Underdown, Carole Levin Dec 1994

Review Of Fire From Heaven: Life In An English Town In The Seventeenth Century By David Underdown, Carole Levin

Department of History: Faculty Publications

David Underdown, one of the foremost scholars of seventeenth-century England, has produced major political studies, such as Pride's Purge: Politics in the Puritan Revolution (Oxford, 1971), and works that combined social history with political change, such as Revel, Riot, and Rebellion (New York, 1985). Fire from Heaven is a case study of the west-county town of Dorchester, a proud and important community in the first half of the seventeenth century. The material and close reading of Dorchester's records are fascinating and give us insight into the lives of the forgotten people. This book offers a key into the mental world …

“The Muhlenberg County [Kentucky] Heritage” was published four times a year by the Muhlenberg County Genealogical Society in Greenville, Kentucky, from 1978 to 2001. The cover title sometimes appears as “The Heritage.” The publication’s purpose was to support the society and to publish information about the genealogy, culture, and history of Muhlenberg County. Demanding Citizenship: The U.S. Women's Movement, 1848-1930, Lena Sweeten Dec 1994

Demanding Citizenship: The U.S. Women's Movement, 1848-1930, Lena Sweeten

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The U. S. women's movement began in 1848 with the Seneca Falls Convention for women's rights. As set forth by the convention's "Declaration of Sentiments," the movement was concerned with a broad array of social, religious, cultural and political reforms to bring about gender equality. Following the Civil War, the women's movement took on the semblance of a single-issue movement, as the effort to achieve woman suffrage consumed feminists' resources and energies. The acquisition of suffrage was intended to be the vehicle for women to gain the spectrum of rights initially defined in 1848. Extravagant predictions about the power of …

Being According To Aristotle's Metaphysics Delta, Richard Bodeus Dec 1994

Being According To Aristotle's Metaphysics Delta, Richard Bodeus

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

In ordinary language, what is said 'being' is so-called in several different ways. In his attempt to clarify this important point, Aristotle introduces distinctions that are not as easily grasped as one might at first believe. Commentators are particular troubled by what 'being per se' means, especially in relation to the 'categories'. Some of them are also surprised to see that Aristotle leaves no room for what one might call 'existential being.' And other aspects of Aristotle's account raise additional problems. I hope to contribute to a more successful understanding of Aristotle's general aim in this text.

Sex & Mysticism In Plato, John Thorp Dec 1994

Sex & Mysticism In Plato, John Thorp

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

It is a commonplace that Plato seems to entertain two rather different pictures of our access to knowledge of the forms. On the one hand there is anamnesis, remembering a knowledge that we had before our incarnation and that we have since forgotten – thus the Phaedo and the Meno. On the other, there is something that looks far more like abstractive generalization from sensible particulars – the Symposium is the best example, though there are elements of it also in the Republic and the Sophist. This paper argues that there is also a third epistemological model at work, …

The Parts Of Definitions, Unity, And Sameness In Aristotle's Metaphysics, Mark R. Wheeler Dec 1994

The Parts Of Definitions, Unity, And Sameness In Aristotle's Metaphysics, Mark R. Wheeler

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

First principles (ἀρχάι) are crucial to Aristotle's conception of scientific knowledge (επιστήμη). In the Posterior Analytics, Aristotle teaches us that all scientific knowledge is either knowledge arrived at through demonstration from first principles or knowledge of the first principles themselves. The first principles of a given science are the primary premises (τὰ πρώτα) of that science (Pst. An., 72a7); they express the essential characteristics of the substance about which the given science is concerned; and all other scientific knowledge is derived from the first principles through syllogistic inference.

The first principles of the various sciences are expressed through definition (ὁρισμός). …
