The International Yaoi Boys’ Love Fandom And The Regulation Of Virtual Child Pornography: Current Legislation And Its Implications, Mark J. Mclelland, S. Yoo Nov 2010

The International Yaoi Boys’ Love Fandom And The Regulation Of Virtual Child Pornography: Current Legislation And Its Implications, Mark J. Mclelland, S. Yoo

Mark McLelland

This article looks at current international legislation regulating child pornography, particularly at the category of virtual child pornography, or purely fictional images and textual representations of young people defined as “minors”. Current legislation has been drafted with adult male pedophiles in mind in an attempt to stop harm to real children. However, the paper points out that the legislation also inadvertently criminalizes a large, predominantly female fandom of manga fans who use the Internet to participate in online fan clubs dedicated to a Japanese manga genre known as yaoi, which celebrates the love shared between fictional “beautiful boys.” It is …

From The Stage To The Clinic: Changing Transgender Identities In Post-War Japan, Mark J. Mclelland Nov 2010

From The Stage To The Clinic: Changing Transgender Identities In Post-War Japan, Mark J. Mclelland

Mark McLelland

This paper looks at the transformation of male-to-female transgender identities in Japan since the Second World War. The development of print media aimed at a transgender readership is outlined as is the development of bars, clubs and sex venues where transgendered men sought both partners and commercial opportunities. The origin of various transgender 'folk categories' such as okama, gei bōi, burūbōi and nyūhāfu is discussed and their dependence upon and relationship to the entertainment world is outlined. Finally, the paper looks at how the resumption of sex-change operations in Japan in 1998 has led to a new public discourse about …

The World Of Yaoi: The Internet, Censorship And The Global “Boys’ Love” Fandom, Mark J. Mclelland Nov 2010

The World Of Yaoi: The Internet, Censorship And The Global “Boys’ Love” Fandom, Mark J. Mclelland

Mark McLelland

This paper looks at the recent explosion of cultural concern over child sexual abuse and child pornography, particularly as it relates to the trading of such images via the internet. It is noted that legislation originally enacted to prohibit the sexualized representation of actual children has recently been extended to include fictional representations and in Australia includes text as well as graphics. Taking the online global fandom dedicated to ‘boys’ love’ (also known as yaoi) as an example, I argue that legislation prohibiting fictional accounts of ‘child’ sex-abuse is ill-conceived and potentially damaging to human rights and freedom of expression. …

“Kissing Is A Symbol Of Democracy!” Dating, Democracy And Romance In Occupied Japan 1945-1952, Mark J. Mclelland Nov 2010

“Kissing Is A Symbol Of Democracy!” Dating, Democracy And Romance In Occupied Japan 1945-1952, Mark J. Mclelland

Mark McLelland

Japan’s defeat at the end of its fifteen years’ war in 1945 saw widespread changes to the family and gender system. Women were given political rights for the first time and were recognised as independent agents at work, in the home and in their romantic relationships. Whereas war-time ideology had brought about the “death of romance” in popular culture, with the relaxation of censorship at the war’s end, there was a sudden proliferation in discussion about the qualities of the “new” or “modern” couple and the popular press saw the rise of an eclectic range of “experts” offering advice on …

Australia's Proposed Internet Filtering System : Its Implications For Animation, Comic And Gaming (Acg) And Slash Fan Communities, Mark J. Mclelland Nov 2010

Australia's Proposed Internet Filtering System : Its Implications For Animation, Comic And Gaming (Acg) And Slash Fan Communities, Mark J. Mclelland

Mark McLelland

This paper investigates the implications of the Australian Government’s proposed Internet filtering system in the light of Australia’s blanket prohibition of ‘child pornography’ (including cartoons, animation, drawings, digitally manipulated photographs, and text) for Australian fan communities of ACG and slash. ACG/slash fan groups in Australia and elsewhere routinely consume, produce and disseminate material containing ‘prohibited content’ (i.e. featuring fictitious ‘under-age’ characters in violent and sexual scenarios). Moreover, a large portion of the fans producing and trading in these images are themselves ‘under age’. Focusing specifically upon the overwhelmingly female fandom surrounding Japanese ‘Boys’ Love’ (BL) manga, the paper argues that …

The Role Of The 'Tojisha' In Current Debates About Sexual Minority Rights In Japan, Mark J. Mclelland Nov 2010

The Role Of The 'Tojisha' In Current Debates About Sexual Minority Rights In Japan, Mark J. Mclelland

Mark McLelland

‘Speaking as a tojisha’ has become an important strategy in establishing ‘correct knowledge’ about sexual minority cultures in contemporary Japan. Originally developed in a legal context where it referred to the ‘parties’ in court proceedings, in the 1970s tojisha was taken up by citizens’ groups campaigning for the right of self determination for the ‘parties concerned’ facing discrimination and has become a central concept for all minority self-advocacy groups. In the 1990s the discourse of tojisha sei (tojisha-ness) was adopted by gay rights groups and by spokespersons for lesbian and transgender communities in a battle to change public perceptions of …

'Race' On The Japanese Internet: Discussing Korea And Koreans On '2-Channeru', Mark J. Mclelland Nov 2010

'Race' On The Japanese Internet: Discussing Korea And Koreans On '2-Channeru', Mark J. Mclelland

Mark McLelland

This paper investigates discourse about race on the Japanese Internet, particularly regarding resident Koreans and their relationship to the Japanese. One board relating to arguments about Korea on the notorious ‘Channel 2’ BBS, Japan’s most visited Internet site, is investigated, since it is one of the main public forums in which racial vilification takes place, perpetrated by both Japanese and Korean posters. Nakamura’s (Cybertypes) contention that the Internet is ‘a place where race is created as an effect of the net's distinctive uses of language’ is taken as a starting point to investigate the differences between Japanese and Anglophone notions …

Interpretation And Orientalism: Outing Japan's Sexual Minorities To The English-Speaking World, Mark J. Mclelland Nov 2010

Interpretation And Orientalism: Outing Japan's Sexual Minorities To The English-Speaking World, Mark J. Mclelland

Mark McLelland

The growing visibility of Japanese gay men and lesbians who articulate their identities in a manner similar to activists in the west has been heightened by two recent English books Queer Japan and Coming Out in Japan. While acknowledging the need to listen to a plurality of voices from Japan, this essay critiques the manner in which the coming-out narratives in these books have been framed by their western translators and editors. In the introductions to both books, Japan is (once again) pictured as a feudal and repressive society. In their efforts to let the homosexual subaltern speak, the translators …

Ascilite Report 1 For The Carrick Exchange Project: Literature Review, R. Philip, Geraldine E. Lefoe, M. O'Reilly, Dominique R. Parrish

Geraldine Lefoe

To inform the design and development of the Carrick Exchange, the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education required research into the prospective user needs, contexts of use and policies necessary to facilitate engagement of the higher education sector with the Carrick Exchange. The data collection and analysis for this research included an extensive literature review, the substance of which forms this report. This document provides an overview of the significant literature relevant to the research conducted by ascilite and should be read in conjunction with the final report. A Peer Review Model For The Altc Exchange: The Landscape Of Shared Learning And Teaching Resources, R. Philip, Geraldine E. Lefoe, M. O'Reilly, Dominique R. Parrish

Geraldine Lefoe

The ALTC Exchange (formerly the Carrick Exchange), is a national repository and networking service for Australian higher education. The Exchange was designed to provide access to a repository of shared learning and teaching resources, work spaces for team members engaged in collaborative projects, and communication and networking services. The Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) established the Exchange for those who teach, manage and lead learning and teaching in higher education. As part of the research conducted to inform the development of the Exchange, models for peer review of educational resources were evaluated. For this, a design-based research approach was …

Environments For Change In A Faculty Of Arts: The Impact Of Teaching Off Campus, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Rebecca Albury Nov 2010

Environments For Change In A Faculty Of Arts: The Impact Of Teaching Off Campus, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Rebecca Albury

Geraldine Lefoe

For a university in regional Australia, a new degree program offered through a remote campus and access centres, provided a supportive environment for faculty to try out new teaching and learning methods, specifically making use of a learning management system (WebCT) for aspects of communication and content. This article examines the impact this had on the faculty, in particular at the increased usage of ICT in subjects offered on campus and also examines issues such as workload and curriculum redesign, which were identified as problematic by faculty as they embraced innovative methods of teaching and learning.

Enabling Leadership Capacity Through Authentic Learning: The Faculty Scholars Program, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Dominique Rene Parrish Nov 2010

Enabling Leadership Capacity Through Authentic Learning: The Faculty Scholars Program, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Dominique Rene Parrish

Geraldine Lefoe

An identified gap in the higher education sector is the development of leadership capacity for teaching and learning. Significant funding has been allocated by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) to support the development of academic leadership in higher education. The outcomes of this initiative will ultimately improve the student experience as a more scholarly approach to the many aspects of teaching and learning is adopted. One project funded by ALTC supported four universities to develop and trial a framework for leadership capacity development. Five critical factors for success were identified including authentic learning activities that were situated in …

Working ‘Through’ Graduate Attributes: A Bottom-Up Approach, Bronwyn James, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Muhammad N S Hadi Nov 2010

Working ‘Through’ Graduate Attributes: A Bottom-Up Approach, Bronwyn James, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Muhammad N S Hadi

Geraldine Lefoe

The implementation of graduate attributes is a contentious addition to the agenda of Australian universities as they face issues related to quality assurance and funding. In this case study, we describe a way that we as teachers can work ‘through’ rather than uncritically with the graduate attributes. We suggest that the graduate attributes potentially allow the university community to focus on the processes of pedagogy. The paper also demonstrates how the graduate attributes can be used to initiate the development of a community of practice through collaboration and sharing of teaching strategies. The project allows a bottom-up approach for interpretation …

Modelling Blended Learning Environments: Designing An Academic Development Blog, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Wendy Meyers Nov 2010

Modelling Blended Learning Environments: Designing An Academic Development Blog, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Wendy Meyers

Geraldine Lefoe

A major challenge facing academic developers is meeting the development needs of both time poor academics and those staff in multi-location campuses, especially sessional tutors, who may start teaching several weeks before electronic access is enabled. Necessary restrictions placed on access to local intranet and Learning Management Systems meant rethinking how to meet the needs of all staff and in the process model good practice through the use of blended learning environments. One regional university, with seven national and one international campus, is currently redesigning their staff development program to incorporate the use of blogs and wikis to provide access …

Ascilite Report 4 For The Carrick Exchange Project: Final Report, R. Philip, Dominique R. Parrish, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Meg O'Reilly

Geraldine Lefoe

Whilst the development of repositories for sharing learning and teaching resources has expanded considerably in the last few years in Australia, many repositories have a particular institutional or discipline focus. In Australia there is no dedicated national repository or community available for the higher education sector that provides a cross disciplinary forum for sharing ideas and resources about learning and teaching, and for cross-institutional collaboration. The Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education is well placed to address this gap by developing the Carrick Exchange (see Phillips, Orrell & Millea, 2007). Utilising the current expansion and availability of …
