At Home In The Museum: Pierre Loti, Self-Collected, Self-Possessed, Anthony Purdy

Anthony Purdy

Suspended between metaphor and metonymy, between the spatial logic of the collection and the scenario of the personal that was the life of its owner, Pierre Loti's house in Rochefort participates in the same transvestism as his novels. This article explores the house museum as a heterotopia in which the synchronous time of the collection is open to disruption by the souvenir's reference to past events, to the biography of the collector.

Adaptation, Metafiction, Self-Creation, Julie Levinson

Julie Levinson

When the film Adaptation was released, the critical reception generally lauded it for the originality of its narrative construction and criticized it for its disappointingly conventional ending. “Adaptation, Metafiction, Self-Creation,” refutes those critical assessments by placing the film in historical and theoretical contexts. The film conforms to a type of reflexive storytelling that I call “self-creating narrative”: works that document, as part of their diegesis, their own artistic coming-into-being. Using the narratological taxonomy of Gerard Genette, the article examines Adaptation side by side with such earlier exemplars of the form as 8 1/2 and Providence, which likewise engage in metafictive …

James Stewart once said, "For John Ford, there was no need for dialogue. The music said it all." This lively, accessible study is the first comprehensive analysis of Ford's use of music in his iconic westerns. Encompassing a variety of critical approaches and incorporating original archival research, Kathryn Kalinak explores the director's oft-noted predilection for American folk song, hymnody, and period music. Gema Pérez-Sánchez argues that the process of political and cultural transition from dictatorship to democracy in Spain can be read allegorically as a shift from a dictatorship that followed a self-loathing “homosexual” model to a democracy that identified as a pluralized “queer” body. Focusing on the urban cultural phenomenon of la movida, she offers a sustained analysis of high queer culture, as represented by novels, along with an examination of low queer culture, as represented by comic books and films. This article reports on interviews conducted with students and educators in various Toronto-area high schools in an attempt to gauge how and to what extent so-called "formal" law (laws, policies, regulations) interacts with other, sometimes, competing normative or- ders, such as gender codes, sexuality, race, religion, in the educational setting. This approach is necessary to understand how anti-harassment and anti-homophobia policies are complicated by these other regulating influences.

Little existing research explores the special ethical challenges most applicable to social movement organizations as they struggle to use persuasive communication campaigns to redefine accepted social practices into social problems. As a case study, this paper evaluates People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' (PETA) controversial 2003-04 international "Holocaust on Your Plate" vegetarian campaign to determine its strengths and weaknesses from the standpoint of public relations ethics, using TARES principles and ethical theory as a guide. Issues of respect and minimizing harm take center stage. Both speciesist and nonspeciesist perspectives are considered.

There is an often unacknowledged symbiotic relationship between creators and owners of mass media works and the fan communities inspired by their work. The nature of participatory fan communities makes it possible for both authors and fans to be active agents in collectively determining the validity of the “official” storyline. The interaction
between creators and fans illustrates John Fiske's idea of a “semiotic democracy,” the power of media in enabling audiences to become involved in the creative process of constructing cultural symbols rather than serving merely as passive consumers.
